Airbox Cover Question

861 Views 12 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  zantegr
Hi Guys, I've been fortunate enough to be able to buy a 2003 VRSCA Model. However the ally brushed airbox cover has two small dings :( ... I have another model airbox cover, a painted one. Can I strip the paint on this other one and get the aluminium brushed as a replacement?

I've had the existing airbox looked at by the Paintless Dent Removal mob and no one has the confidence to take it on :(

Many thanks

As long as the cover is aluminum, I don't see why you couldn't strip it and polish it. Might look pretty nice polished.

Just confirm with a magnet that it is aluminum. I believe in late 2006 they started stamping them in steel.

Thanks guys, I whacked a magnet on it and it fell off, so I assume it's an ally one, they didn't make plastic ones, did they? Here's a pic of it on link below

The factory did not make plastic ones. There are some aftermarket fiberglass and carbon fiber ones but they are easily noticed.

Thanks guys, I'm wondering what aluminium wrap would be like to fix the original airbox cover and then matt clear over the top to protect? Sounds nasty but I've seen some wrap jobs on cars and they look amazing, thoughts?

I have the same dilemma please post your results. I’m seriously considering buying one off eBay and having it wrapped. I would much rather find an aluminum painted one strip and polish. I’m just a purist at heart. That’s what I loved about the 2002 and 03rods was the DeLorean look.

Stripped and polished would be a real pain in the ass to keep looking good. There are clear coats for that but it alters the shine or color to some extent.

Guys what about the anniversary badges and decals? HD want silly money, I cannot justify this expense. Is there a third-party supplier?

I had the same problem after denting my anodized anniversary airbox cover.

The 2003 had 2 types of air boxes
  • Anodized
  • Anniversary paint set

The anodized version cannot be repaired, if it’s dented/chipped you cannot strip
It or polish it as the finish is a clear anodized coat. If you paint it you need to paint the front/rear fender and radiator trim.

The anniversary paint set is painted and has a blueish stripe down it. That can be repaired and painted and you get get the color codes from the attached PDF.

Here is the anodized air box

Here is the anniversary paint set.

If you paint the airbox remove the 2 emblems and the 100th anniversary insignia using a heat gun and some fishing wire. Use 3m VHB double sided tape to stick them back on.
