I need a liitle help before I finally take the plunge and order my pulley.

1. I intend to order an aftermarket pulley - which one is best ?

2. My local HD dealer says I need a re-flash for the correct running of the bike (about £150 here in the Uk !!) (SE stage 1 already fitted)
AS WELL AS A REFLASH for
the correct reading of the speedo ????

3. Is all this correct ? before I part with my money

Thanks Bros

I think your dealer likes your wallet or they don't know what their on about.
Changing a pulley will not make your bike run incorrectly, it will cause a slight speedo incorrection. This can be corrected for £54 by fitting a separate speedo re-calibrator.
I have a re-calibrator but have not fitted yet as my 28T pulley has not yet arrived from the states. Got to get me another bike lift too, but that's another story.
The best pulley is the TT one, as it requires no special tools to fit.

From what I've seen there are 4 variations of the SE performance flashes (non HDI bikes)

Slip Ons '02 - '03 (30T)
Slip Ons '02 - '04 (28T)
16ga '02 - '03 (30T)
16ga '02 - '04 (28T)

Then there's the 28T flash but it's not clear from the literature whether this just changes the speedo calibration or whether it's simply the Stock EFI map with the 28T setting. If it's the latter then you would NOT want to load this if you already have a flash for one of the SE pipes. Your dealer should be able to call Harley and get the answer but CONFIRM that the 28T ONLY flash does not overwrite the EFI tables.

my impression is that it is the flash, plus the speedo recal, or just the flash. just my impression. Waiting for max or Kaz to chime in here.....

The 28T setting must just be a flag. In the RT tuning mode after you select "Program ECU" it will prompt if the 28T is installed, so the 28T isn't part of a flash. Perhaps the HD dealer can set just the flag without doing a full flash. As with the RT we can't read the flash that's in there so to do the 28T with a RT it would require a flash that overwrites the current flash.

The HD docs for the RT list only one calibration ID for HDI VRODS: 105GQ017 for SE A/C and slip-fit mufflers.

It seems logical that the flash only sets the speedo portion of the ECM but that doesn't mean that's the way it works in real life. It's quite possible that the programing sequence must run from the beginning to the end to complete and there's no direct, random access to the portion of the code that controls the speedometer. My guess is the question pops up so the RT knows how to format the data stream.

The reason only the Slip Ons show up with the HDI bikes is because the HDI bikes have a catalytic converter in the center exhaust section. The 16ga pipes have no provision for a cat. Not all international bikes are HDI, I don't know what countries get the cats.

ANY dealer should be able to call HD tech support and get the answer.

Have any of you asked your dealer this simple question, "Does the 28T only flash overwrite the existing EFI map in the ECM"?

(I have no reason to ask, I have the Race Tuner :diablo: )

Now I am really confused ! HELP

OK - What do I do when I get the 28T pulley ?

Do I leave the flash that is already on the bike for SE slip-ons and just get a speedo recal unit form Steve at V-mod - if I do this will the bike run like c..p.

HELP !

It seems to me that when the flash is done with the RT that the only change between the 28tooth and the 30 tooth is just the speedo calibration. Unlike a car that requires different shift points and timing points according to gearing the bike should be the exact same on the fuel map no matter what gear you run. As far as the HD flash I'm sure there is no such thing as a partial flash and that you will have to purchase a flash cartrige that cost the same as all the others you have already purchased. And it will be specific to the model that you have just as the others were.

Hi Icehawk

The Speedo re-calibrator is the cheapest way for you to go, about £100 cheaper.
Order a pulley, put it on, your bike will run OK, then PM me and I will let you know about the speedo gadget. I have one I got from hungary of all places £54 all in, I just have not fitted yet.

Don't be paying the dealer for something you already have
