13dx short and engine off at highway speed

So on trip out turn signals, rail light and brake light stopped working. No other symptoms. I was almost empty on gas so filled up. Before heading back replaced light fuse it was blown. Ride back was okay about 1/4 the way then turns went out again along with tail and brake. Knowing I had no more spares I kept going trying to make it home. At 75 mph engine shuts off like it would if I ran out of gas. While still moving and in gear twisted throttle a few times and engine comes back to life. Happened a few more times but by then lowered my speed so not as scary. Twice happened to the point throttle twist didn't bring back to life, had to hit start switch to bring engine back. When I did hit start headlight goes out while starting....

So looks like definitely a short, possible low battery, but not sure if engine stall is related or yet another issue to look into. Plan to find and fix short, check battery and charge if need be. If engine stall continues will drIn and replace gas. Any other ideas o. Stall?

finally got around to taking a look at this.

BUS er

with DTC codes B1004, b1005, and u1301 under C.

Part number listed is 67453-09

cleared codes. well all but the 1301 which does not seem to want to clear.

the 2 that cleared have not come back, but fuel sensors have never been good on these bikes... will look into if they return.

I did extend my handle bars up VIA riser, I am guessing my bus er is related to connection to my cluster being too short, may have worked lose. will look at this tomorrow.

Battery was also low due to me checking through my wiring, testing and such with ignition on. Another reason to check tomorrow after its had a chance to charge.

So finally got around to testing. All connections good, no short or open circuits. I get voltage to fuel pump, all way up to cluster. I dont get fuel to engine.... so ecm, fuel pump, or just a dang old battery.... since it is the cheapest place to start and the easiest replacement (not requiring digital technician like the ecm) I'm starting with battery, needs replacing anyway.

I will be looking for a used ecm to play with preferably a 13-15 DX donor...

I'm pissed that HD has locked town their EFi bikes with DT2 requirements for programming anything.. if I find is the ecm I'm tossing it and going thundermax. $$$ but still cheaper than new ecm and HD programming it
Okay, battery was definitely not holding a charge, swapped out with new one and problem still persists. Looking for a loaner ECM now to either verify it is the problem, or rule it out.

Okay, problem found.

broke down and paid the $8 for PDF versions of service manual, and electrical diagnostic guide. page 24 of EDG had me disconnecting components while ignition off, then turn on and see if the buss er cleared. 2nd step was disconnect ECM and see results.

Well I did not really disconnect ECM instead I removed the dynojet power commander from the circuit and tried that first..... bike has no errors and starts right up now.....

Now all i have to do is figure out if DPC lost its config or is truly bad, either way problem found.

Late to the party but the PC is known to cause a shit load of weird issues. Disconnecting is the first test in diagnosing the bikes issues.

Yeah I know, I had removed and disconnected just about everything when I started this thread attempting to rule out open/shorts. Was a long time before I had time again to look at it so when I started troubleshooting again I assumed I had PC disconnected, brain fart, I did not.

PC ran fine no issues for about 6 years, then all of the sudden at 70MPH on a highway in the fast lane, engine dies, still had electrical power, but no power. I know now that was because the PC was going bad and I was getting NO fuel. Was not fun getting all the way right from left lane while bike continuously slowing down without getting plowed over by vehicles I am now pissing off.

I am half tempted at just getting rid of both PC and ECM and going for thundermax, just not sure I want to put in the $$ for it right now, still probably cheaper than having HD reprogram my ECM and dynotune it.
there have been so many of those pcs going bad its a wonder people persist with them.

Back before 07 my dealer use to install them. They got tired of having to tow the bikes back.
