I've seen a few other threads on the rear inner fender top mounting holes not lining up; as mine don't either. (installing luggage rack and back rest)

I removed the two brass inserts in the fender liner to open the holes; loosening all other bolts had no adjustment affect. I'm guessing these are compression spacers for tightening against the plastic inner fender...

Has anyone else done this? Any problems with doing this?

Thanks,

Same problem here.
Remove the fender and loosen the fasteners on both sides at the rear (underneath). Then you should be able to line up the holes. Screw the bolts into the holes, tighten the fasteners, and install the fender. The threads under those holes were in rough shape on my bike, I had to chase them first.

Yup... remove all the nuts on the inner fender (probably only 2 of them although four bolts).

Push slightly down on the rear part of the inner fender. Screw in the 2 large bolts of the rack. Tighten up the 4 nuts (I added the 2 that are not there).

I also had to re-tap the nuts that are welded on the frame that the rack bolts go into to be able to insert the rack bolts.

When done.. remove the rack bolts, put back on the painted fender and everything should line up.

Good luck,
Mike

Man, I thought I lost those two nuts (hardware folks) you’re referencing. Were the two missing ones from the forward bolts? Why in the hell would they not install those?

Mike; if you don’t mind me asking, what size tap is required to clean out those upper bolt threads? Did you have any problem with the plastic lip that grabs onto the rear seat when reinstalling it after the base plate? I seem to recall some folks breaking this section clean off.

I had the two rear bolts missing; nuts were there. When I reinstalled the pilon after adding the base plate, I had to push it down pretty hard to fit the tab. I can see where / why it would break off.

I was told they are no longer part of production. But they are in the parts and service manual.
Go figure... seems like a strange place to save a few seconds on the line and a couple of pennies.

If I remember correctly they are M6. Screw the rack bolt into a M6 nut just to be sure.

No, not at all... and I re-installed it several times before figuring out how to get the rack on.

Same here... I'm about to change to a Corbin Hollywood. Hopefully that will fit better with the rack. The make a different pillon if you have a rack.
