1. I have read different articles where guys state that their engines ran cooler and shifted better/quieter/smoother running Amsol V Twin oil vs. other oils. Opinions? 2. Is it safe to use Seafoam in the engine before changing the oil with the transmission sharing the same oil? Will it damage the clutches?

Good question. My 06 D is new to me last fall. My 1st HD.

I used to put 2-3 oz of seamfoam into the oil when it was warmed up and then
run it in *neutral for a few minutes in my Japanese cruisers b4 I dropped the oil.

I Will probably do that on my 1st change soon (3k 1/yr) Mobil 1 V-Twin Oil (best available oil next to Amsoil?)unless I hear differently...

I think it is a good idea to thin the oil before you drop it.
So that was the more important question for me
Just checking to see others opinions on it, not looking for proof or B.S.
I didn't say the stuff was magic.

You got an opinion on thinning your oil out with an additive before dropping it?

The ONLY thing thinning your oil would help in an oil change is that it would drain a few seconds faster. Waste of time, waste of money, you don't get it all out when draining, introducing an unknown and unapproved contaminate into you crankcase, going against best practice pretty much anywhere in the industry of internal combustion engines. But then again, guys on the internet say it's great.

Forgive my being so harsh, but I gave up on attempting reasonable discussion on these issues long ago. I am now reduced to simple ridicule.

Thanks for your opinion.
Actually not some guy on the internet but a friend who is a mechanic does this and never had issues.
Me neither. An older bike not cared for has crap in the Case. There are innocuous products.
My old 01 VZ800 I bought used. I did it for 3 oil changes in a row then after 3k the Synth Oil was less
black and nasty when I dropped it. To each his own.
I put 17000 k on that bike. And sold it running perfect @28k.
I have seen some sludge come out when I have run it in N with additives before a change.
I am not an idiot. I know the results I have gotten over the years.
I wasn't claiming anything was a miracle treatment.
Maybe you should give it a break if you have been "reduced to simple ridicule"
Good Luck Brother.

It's already piss thin when you dump it hot. I can't think of a single reason to add Seafoam to oil. Fuel sure but I'm not risking any possible reactions to the plastic fuel tank so the odd time I run MMO in the fuel. An oil like Amsoil or Mobil 1 have gobs of detergent in them to keep the innards clean. I use Amsoil, not because it's a magic oil but more so for the gearbox and it's GL rating. There are others that fair just as well. First to second gear shifts cannot be solved with any oil. It's a design deal in the gearbox.

My apologies. Didn't realize that the source was a friend who is a mechanic, and of course no amount of factual information could possibly refute 17,000 trouble free kilometers. :notworth:

EDIT: If I understand correctly, you had a bike with sludge buildup somewhere in the motor. You then added a product to the crankcase that would dislodge said sludge. You then started the bike and pumped this dislodged sludge through your lubrication system. You then drained the oil hoping that a simple draining would remove all the dislodged sludge. You validate that the motor has no additional wear or damage because of how well it runs. Did I get the facts correct? Last fact as you state, you are not an idiot.

Extra Virgin
Still trying to figure out how a virgin becomes extra virgin.

You should try peanut oil. Not in the oil system as that would be stupid. Add a few tablespoons to your gas tank and your exhaust will smell like French fries. As an added bonus, I did it and my gas gage works great, so obviously the peanut oil is the cause. Can't argue with results.

Thanks. I learn from others and the forums are great.
I'm not a mechanic so sometimes I go the little extra TLC route kind of a placebo effect I admit. So I like to hear others like you. Like I had not considered the plastic vs. Steel tank as a far as adding additives. That's a good point.

For $5000 purchase cost and about $1200 in tires. rotors, crash bars, windscreen and Grips fluids etc, I got one nice Hot-Rod in my basically Stock 06 D.
And I did the Triple tree nut upgrade cause I learned that here.
Thanks

Good deal, man. Typically this forum is quite helpful and friendly, although I see you've already run into our resident keyboard warrior. :hmm: Brush it off.
There is a lot of useful information on here. Good luck!
