I know its early, but I thought that I would start planning now. Im heading to Sturgis this year and wanted to get your opinions on where to stay. Now that I live 4 hours from there, I cant not go!

If anyone else is going and needs to share the cost of a hotel/campground, the wife and I are open to that too.

Also, if you are riding there and coming through Bismarck, ND and need a place to stay or make repairs, Im only a 4 hour drive from Sturgis and right off of the interstate (94).

Determining what type of experience you're looking for will pretty much determine where you want to stay.

Fwiw, if you're looking for quiet and laid back (but 5 min from downtown), I really recommend Hog Heaven. It's for the quieter, low-key set. No "Show us your mammary glands" lines or stripper chicks, but a very pleasant and convenient place to stay, especially if you bring a wife and (older, bike riding) kids.

It really depends what kinda time you want to have. Drunken partyfest or laid back cruising.

Find the sugar shack, best burgers in the hills.

Ride vanocker canyon road, for sure do the pigtails and iron mountain highway.

Most of the things I enjoyed about Sturgis didn't involve the rally. The roads and scenery were amazing, 3 dollar bottles of water and traffic jams...not so much.

Watch out for people who can't ride. It's unreal how bad some are.

My favorite time to hit Sturgis??? JUNE!! haven't been to the ralley forever... that time is more for camping out, staying put, drinking beer, enjoying the entertainment, and fighting crowds. I prefer the "off season" as the hills are a great place to ride... and I'll second working your lunch break around a stop at the Sugar Shack. I do have a few friends that have been trying to convince me to bring the bike up to a ralley and join them..... I'm fortunate enough to have quite a bit of family in RC, Hot Springs, and Spearfish so accomodations are there for me. Either way.... GO!! like it or not, you gotta put it on your "been there, rode that" list.

Maybe we should plan on an 1130cc get together in the RC / Sturgis area for June or July not August.

I went the end of June and loved it. I was also blessed with perfect weather. There are several rides that I wanted to and and didn't. Doing this with a group of us would be badass. V-Rods in the Hills. I'm only a few hours away...

Im in Bismarck too. That would be a great time to get some 1130cc ers together to make the ride on an "other than Rally" weekend.

I did Laconia last year when I was living on the East coast. Not very impressed. Im hoping that Sturgis is better. We want to party a couple of nights and ride during the day. What I want to avoid is partying in Sturgis and having to leave our bikes there because we have been drinking. So we are looking for something action/bands in the evening so we can stumble to our tent afterwards!

Thanks for the suggestions, please keep them coming.

See y'all!!!

Will be staying in Spearfish area again this year, keeping eye on posts to see about maybe gathering of "V" s....

I agree with your advice about needing to determine what experience you are looking for! I prefer to get some rest these days, so stay at the "Rush No More" campground for $25/night. Shade, indoor showers/toilets, bar, food, Da Bus, wireless, laundry, UPS shipping to/from the campground, and just outside of Sturgis. The campground has a 11:00 noise curfew which allows for some sleep.

My brother and I made our reservations this week. Reportedly, reservations for the 75th next year are already heating up.

I am leaving Saturday, 8/2 from Fort Collins around 6:00 a.m. Should be at the campground around noon :). I have a "news letter" with info about the rally, the area, events, with links to other useful websites if anyone is interested. Just send me a PM with an email address to mail it to.

Buffalo Chip Campground may interest you then. Me and a buddy went last year. Didn't spend much time after dark actually in Sturgis. Plenty of drinking and entertainment right there. The three highlights at the campground were seeing ZZTop, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Tesla in concert. Also spent a fair amount of time at Full Throttle Saloon, which ain't in downtown Sturgis, either.

Should you want to do more than drink and party, like maybe ride the Black Hills, you might check out www.blackhillsmotorcyclerides.com Paul Mitchell has a pretty good paperback detailing the major routes and several side trips. You can pick up a copy at the museum in downtown Sturgis. Recommended reading for first timer or those looking for something different than hanging around downtown or one of the bigger campgrounds. There is more to do than can be accomplished in a week stay!!!

I'm heading up on July 29, conducting training in Wichita on Tuesday, meeting the usual suspects in Valentine Ne on Wednesday, and doing the Black Hills State University thing again Thursday through Tuesday. We have an open bunk in our room if anyone thinks they can stand 3 boring old HVAC guys for 4 days. I dud purchase a replacement for the Honda bike hauler ("It's just not right - a Honda hauling a Harley") with a Roadtrek Sprinter:

It actually gets better mileage than the Honda.

So I'm heading to Sturgis Tuesday thru Sunday. Planning on doing a lot of riding and gawking :moon:

If anyone wants to get together, pm me for my number

I'm heading to Omaha Tuesday morning. It's Saturday night at 11:30 PM, and I don't hear any motorcycles. WTF? This place is dead.
