While stopped at a stop light this Saturday, a guy with one of those stripped down Gold Wings (Valkerie or something) pulled up next to me. He sneered at me, probably thinking: I have 6 cylinders and he only has two. When the light changed, he took off. By the time I hit third, I had to look in the mirror to see him. Even though I slowed back down to the speed limit, he seemed not to want to catch up with me. Probably lost his sneer.
V-Rod one, Honda nothing.

Thats a good one, the Valkyrie guys give me a lot of crap about my "vibrating tampon" Harley, I'll bet he doesn't post his beatdown on the Valk forum.

FYI, the older Valks are the 1520cc flat sixes with six carbs rather than the two that Gold Wings get. The Rune is similar except its the 1800cc F6.

If it was a stripped down wing or valk as you called it then it was a 1500 wing that has much less horsepower than the v rod and weighs much more.

I have the gl1800 wing that weighs alot more than my Vrod. It also has alot more torque but I dont think it has anymore horse. My V rod will beat it in the straights by a decent margin. My v rod is stock as well as my wing. In the twisties I find the wing much better handling. All three of these bikes are great machines. I see many 1500 valks and wings with over 300,000 miles on the clocks and seen a few 1800's with well over 150,000. Youll find most could care less if you can beat them, heck whats the bragging rights on beating a 850 to 900 pound touring bike inthe quarter mile? What you will find is the boys and girls that ride those bikes are serious riders who cover some serious ground.

For me to beat my wing on a v rod I would expect no less and be ashamed if it couldnt. Now I just read in one of the mags of a bone stock 600 turning the 1/4 in the 9s. ( with the exception of the susp being tied down) Now how do our V rods do against a 600CC or say a 1,000 cc sport bike. Id be interested to hear how badly the V rod beats the vtx C as well. There pretty close in HP etc but Im not sure about weight. Im assuming with the VTX low reving engine that it isnt much of a match?

.... one bike is a ride..... two bikes is a race! :diablo:

DET,, The Rune will not beat the 1800 Wing. I have no idea what they did diff but it weighs the same and the engine doesnt have as much snuff. Oh and the Rune is FI
Yup, you are correct about the FI. It doesn't surprise me the Rune won't run with the Wing, everything I've read comments on the sportier performance of the newer Wings.

I used to have a Valkyrie. Actually, the thing hauls. I remember comparing the specs... 1/4 mile, roll-on, etc. when considering the V-Rod. They are quite close, but the V-Rod edges it in most measures. If you dropped the Valkyrie rider like a rock, then it was more the rider than the bike.

I DRAG RACE AGAINST MOSTLY 600 ON NOS A COUPLE OF 954'S AND A COUPLE 1000'S AND ONE HYABUSA.A BIG BORE VROD WILL RUN WITH THE
600'S PRETTY WELL 10.50'S AND 60'S THE 1000'S ABOUT THE SAME THE 954
HONDAS ARE 10.30'S AND THE BUSA NO CONTEST HEADS UP 9.90 THATS AT
2700 FT. ABOVE SEA LEVEL. FOR A 600 TO RUN 9'S WOULD HAVE TO BE A REALLY LIGHT AND VERY AGGRESIVE RIDER. I REMEBER WHEN PEE WEE
GLEASON WAS SOUGHT AFTER BY ALL THE MAJOR IMPORT COMPANYS
TO RIDE THERE BIKES IN THE 1/4 AND NO ONE COULD COME CLOSE TO HIS TIMES.LIKE ALL DRAG RACING IT ALL COMES DOWN TO THE RIDER MOST OF
THYE TIME.ON THE STREET I CAN BEAT JUST ABOUT ALL OF THEM TO THE NEXT LIGHT THEY EITHER GO UP IN SMOKE OR STAND THEM STRAIGHT UP
EITHER WAY I'AM GONE.TORQUE IS A WONDERFUL THING AND THEY DONT
HAVE MUCH. :thumb:

I own a Rune and a V-Rod (yer life's good :ride: ), my brother owns a Rocket 3 and a GL1800 gold wing. The Rune is definatly quicker than the Goldwing in most 'on the road' situations because it has noticably more torque. The 1/4 mile runs though are about the same (slight edge to the Rune). The V-rod is quicker than both.
I'm hoping to have a crack at my bro on his R3 with the Rod this summer :diablo:

Max, Danii, Stacey, Okie, et al... may recall the owner/manager? of the Triumph dealership in Plano talking about how frustrated he was because he was not able to beat V-Rod on a Rocket 3 - even after multiple challenges. The R3 is a neat-looking rig, though.

Rick... Wish I could recall the rag it was in. It was on the cover a couple months ago. Yes it was a known rider and it was on a stcok 600. They had tied down the suspension and he ran in the 9's. When I get home I'll see if I can find themag to get the riders name.

Steve... Man I like the Rune. I’d have one in a heart beat except for the price and I really can’t justify two single seat bikes. I’ve ridden the Rune and run against one a couple times. In both cases I beat the Rune with my wing. Now it could be I was just lucky, can’t really say because I’m certainly no professional drag racer.

How long have you had your Rune? The reason I ask is I hear and read only one complaint on that ride. They say the tires don’t last much more than 5 to 6 thousand miles and that they (especially the front) are a major chore to change out. Just wondering if you’ve found this to be the case? Oh and what color did you get?

Hi Joseph, you're obviously someone who appreciates the avant guarde (- a V-rod and Rune 'o-phile you show great taste my friend  )
Yes I really love my Rune . It's a bold statement of a bike with unique looks - much like the V-rod is.- and as you know she's a joy to ride as well. Also, as with the V-rod, there are bargins to be had price wise because most folks don't like to be really different. The Rune and the Rod are in a class of their own, love 'um or hate 'um but you can't ignore them.
I've had my Rune a year now and have been all round Europe on it. I'm off to Germany on it tomorrow morning.
The secret to getting better tire milage is to bump up the tire pressures ( like Valk riders do) you'll get around 7500+ that way and she handles fine. Rune owners are getting the tire changes down pat now and posting quick change tips on the 'Runeriders' board
I've got the red model (black cherry) and it turns heads and draws crowds wherever she goes.

BTW The biggest problem with standing sprint starts on the Rune is the massive amount of wheel spin (heavy bike/big torque). If she could hook up more, she'd be quicker over the 1/4.

Steve... Gotta say I envy you. The CBC is all that and a bag of chips. My wife wanted me to buy it for my solo ride but I just couldnt find a decent deal in CA. Maybe someday Ill find one used at an afordable price.

Stock 600cc Japanese sport bike turns the 9's

Rick Nielson….Ok I found the Magazine the article is in that a 600CC Bone stock sport bike turns the 9’s. It’s the May issue of Cycle World. Ricky Gadson did it more than once on a Kawasaki ZX-6R. Example of his runs, 135.5 mph in 9.93 seconds.

There was one mod, he tied down the suspension to help keep the bike down.
