I was out riding today and when coming to a stoplight I was downshifting and there was a loud clunk noise. When I pulled over to see if there was a problem the bike would not go into Neutral. So I headed home and on the way home I had problems with shifting the bike. It would not go into gear and when I finally did get it to shift, it would not downshift into any lower gears, and then it finally would but changing gears seemd to be very hard.
I think something is broken in the trans...... any suggestions????
I have a 2004 "a" with only 780 miles on it.... I would like any input that anyone has on this. I am going to call the dealer in the morning and see what they have to say.

Hey Ski,
Took it to the dealer and they said that 2 gears are gone.....and not sure but may be more damage... They said they are going to contact HD Techs tomorrow and see what they say. They said that they have never heard of any Trans problems with the 04's. I am VERY upset with this. A brand new bike and the Trans craps out???!!!!
They also mentioned that they would be very interested in hearing about this issue and they might even send a new motor/trans to replace this.....
Is this a possibility??? or are they just blowing alot of hot air?????

Beware Transmission Craped Out!!!!!!

An update to my original post:
Took it to the dealer today and they informed me that 3rd and 4th gears were gone and may have more damage. They told me that they are going to contact the Techs at HD to find out what they need to do. They also said that thay were unaware of ANY trans problems with the vrod.and also mentioned that HD my send a newmotor/trans to replace the one that craped out. (Not sure if they were just blowing sunshine or not??) I will keep you informed as to what happens with this problem. I am VERY unhappy with this in that the bike only has 780 mi on it and the Trans craps out???!!!!!!
I am having second thoughts on the fact that I bought this bike if this is what I have to look forward to............

Thanks

vjam I moved your second thread into this one, please keep this all in one thread. A few more facts might be nice before you jump off the deep end. Did they split the cases and inspect the gears or are they guessing?

vjam I killed your other new thread, please keep all information in this one thread. It really does make it easier to follow. And again it sounds like they don't even have the bike torn down and yet you jump off the deep end. I ride the hell out of mine and have 18k miles and my trans is great so this is not indicative of the bike.

That was there guess on the gears after test driving the bike. They had to wait until they talked to HD before they did anything to it. They told me that they were going to start on it when they got the parts they thought they would need. They said HD was sending some "upgraded" parts for them to install as well. Also, they said they will replace anything else that they find once they get into the trans.

I have owned several bikes and Never had a trans problem.......This being my first HD product...
So yeah I may be a little upset in the fact that this happened and the bike only has 780 mi on it. Being that this is not a common problem with the vrod I would say that anything that happened to the trans would be cause for alarm.... Just my opinion.....

No Problem Bratha! I just hope that one of the Techs have been in the Tranny before. I am finding that the shift fork between 2nd and 3rd are bending. This has been a problem with JAP Bikes for years. Too much HP to handle. Your case, Is very uncommon. HD sould ship you a new motor. Keep me posted. Later Ski.

Hey SKI,
They are going to be repairing the trans. I don't think that the "vrod tech" has ever done a vrod trans but has done some other HD trans before. In talking to him the other day according to him he has not done very much with the vrod in that they have not worked on any because they say that no one has had any problems with them, just some minor stuff. I hope that they get it putback together correct!!!!
I'll keep you posted...
Thanks

Well I got the bike back this past Sat, and according to the guy I talked to they found nothing wrong or broke. This really made me mad and so I asked then why couldn't the bike shift gears or not go into N and what was the loud noise I heard prior to the trans problems and the answer was must be mal-fuctioned which caused the issue. They did put in the upgrade kit and it dose seem to shift smoother so I really don't know what to think of this????!!!!!!

This just happend to me, except I was parking in the garage. I also have an 04 B model. vjam1 What dealer did you go to? Im in Jacksonville the closest dealer is New River Harley but they SUCK, service and sales. What else can I expect from the dealer?

I've got an 04 that I picked up in october that's having trans problems also. When the bike warms up on hot days, I have to move the shift lever back to the mid position after every up or down shift. My dealer dosn't know what it could be and has been trying to get help from H-D for the past few days. :bat

Hehe Bluewolf38 - My '04 with 12k miles just started doing the same thing and I came to the forum tonight to look for info - the service manual does not have any info on this part of the bike, but I'm suspecting a bent or broken shifter return spring inside the transmission. Question now is whether this is a do-it-yourself inspection/fix or a dealer issue...probably the later. Sorry to mix subjects on this thread, but...advice anyone? Thanks.

!! Disregard my last. I spoke before finishing my search of the all-knowing forum! :banghead: Obviously, we need to clean, ream, and lube the shifter to prevent it from sticking in the full up or full down positions on these hot days. Thanks Forum!

After my just completed 1,550 mile round trip from Northern Virginia to Atlanta (During Dennis) through Tenn, the Blue Ridge Parkway is still near the top of my favorites list! :plause: Recommend working it into travel plans!
