I've had this happening for a while now and I can't figure it out. In fact, the dealer has even "fixed" it twice. At least it was fixed until I drove it off the lot. Here goes my attempt to describe it to you. Please let me know if you have any ideas as to what may be going on. Thanks in advance.

After downshifting to first and shift lever returns to its stop-point, the shift lever will often times fall back through its stop-point (as if to downshift again but it’s already in first gear) when tapped with the foot and the clutch still in. It does not seem to affect the ability to ride, but just doesn’t seem right.

Occasionally, and far less often than above, I will downshift (3rd to 2nd or 2nd to 1st) and it doesn't take. I don't know if this is related or not as it doesn't happen very often and it could just be me not shifting hard enough.

Ideas?

I have no ideas, but I've had the same thing happen on my 2004 with 1500 miles on it.

I've attributed it to my skill level or some other mistake on my part. As a matter of fact, it happened again on the way home from work this evening.

I'm holding off taking it to the dealer until it is repeatable on demand.

This happens to me on the odd occasion as well. It seems to be isolated to times when I downsift through more than one gear quickly. :2cents:

Take the lever off and clean and lub the pivit point on the shaft. It becomes slightly resistive and inhibites the spring tension from retracting properly. This is a common problem and in some cases requires sanding to correct a snug fit. It will also be aggravated when the frame tube is hot.

I have had to take a dremel and hone out the pivot on the shifter to get it to operate smoohthly.

Thanks, I'll check that out. Any ideas of what to lube it with?
I would think dry graphite should do the trick - but I may be wrong...

Pro Honda White Lithum Grease comes in a 12.5 OZ spray can and is a general purpose grease that is medium viscosity. It resist moisture and corrosion. I use it on throttle cables and control lever pivots.

It must be good because it says right on the can, " Not intended for use on vehicles in the state of California after 6/30/01. :rofl2:

I was considering trading my 03 for a new street rod. When the dealer had his so called appraiser look at it I was experiencing the same problem. Since I have had the bike I have had to clean and lube the shaft. Once this is done, it shifts as smooth as can be. The dealer told me he couldn't give me an apprasial because the shifting problem was related to "potentially a major trany problem". What a load of crap. I returned home, removed the foot peg and shifter, cleaned the shaft and greased it, reinstalled it and away went the problem. I'm not sure if this is the same problem refered to in the original post, but my problem is that the shifter will not travel freely after a few months. It doesn't bind, but there is enough resistance to not allow the foot shifter to return to the mid position after shifting. It merely stays down and requires me to lift it with my boot. I get tired of having to grease it. They are HD pegs, not the original ones.
