Damaging effects of NOS?

I installed a BOSS NOSS 50 shot stealth kit a few months ago and have went through a couple sets of bottles with it so far. I've heard a lot of talk about the damaging effects but these were all from people who didn't run nitrous and didn't ride v rods, what is your guys' experience with mechanical failures due to nitrous?

Does the stealth kit add fuel as well? Have you a power commander or something similar that you can make the bike run richer (add fuel) when using the nos? If the answer is no to both be very careful as the nos only will lean out your engine. I have always run a "wet" system on my race bikes which adds fuel and nos. Nos is just more oxygen so the idea is to also add more fuel to give a bigger bang, a lean condition can be like setting an oxy torch loose inside your motor (dont ask:-( ) Any added horsepower will have an added wear component, a bigger bang in the combustion chamber puts strain on pistons, gudgeons rods cranks and big ends, the bigger the bang the more strain. Its fun in short bursts eg drag racing, but for on the road a well set up turbo gives more usability in my humble oppinion.

If your worried about running lean or hitting the limiter there are plenty of safety devices that can be added to the boss noss system. Dynotune have both lean detectors and window switches for NO2 that can give you a safety margin but both will take some work to install and it would help to have some electrical knowledge.

Ther general rule of thumb (in terms of automotive NOS) is 20HP per cylinder. My buddy has a Dodge RAM HEMI 5.7L with a 150HP shot on it. He goes through a few bottles every month & everythings perfectly fine. His truck runs 100% fine. No oil burn, nothing.

You may have to fatten up your fuel mixture on your bike just to be safe.

This is the setup i will be running. It has an auto engage built in the system that once you his a RPM the N2O will fire and it will automatically shut off at a max RPM. For me, auto spray N2O at 5k and auto shut off of N2O at 8600. It will also retard the timing while spraying. Also it will not spray unless above 90% throttle. Once all windows are met, it will spray.

For me, this will be a piece of mind about running as safe and eliminate human error.

i havent any experience with the revolution motors but i ran a 50 shot of gas( wet system ) on my 80cube evo and the motor had 28000ks on it before the gas went on and i put another 25000+ks on it (speedo broke at one stage and i rode it for 6-7 months without one....you know how it goes:) ) anyhow i dont know how many 10lb bottles i put thru that motor but it was a lot.....maybe as high as 150
and this bike was ridden. when we pulled the motor for a refresh the bottom end was deemed to be ok so we just did the top end.(top end wasnt all that bad either...little extra wear on the thrust face of the piston) it had branch heads and andrews cams....and went like a scolded cat!!
like most here are saying the secret of a long life for your motor is in the tune but i think treated well your motor will be fine- and bang for buck you just cant beat gas.puts a smile on my face just thinking about it. id have no hesitation putting it on my NRS but im tossing up between a turbo system and a rotrex supercharger at the moment.

If you are running to much NOS, or to much timing, or not enough fuel on your NOS setup the first damage you will see is when the electrodes on the spark plugs burn off. That is the first sign that something is not right and the engine is too lean, has to much timing or to much NOS. The next thing to go will be the pistons getting a pinched ring or a broken skirt or some other piston damage. The best way to avoid any damage is to make sure you have a safe tune up with plenty of fuel, 2 or 3 degrees of timing taken out at peak timing/rpm, and don't get carried away with the amount of NOS you inject.

general rule of thumb is to not exceed 50% of HP the bike has. ie 100 HP motor- 50hp NOS. and you should be safe. a lot of us have added more NOS and had no damage. retardning the timing is important. DOBECKS Performance makes the "fueler" that comes with boss noss systems. difference between the fueler that come with boss noss and the EJK is theres a trigger switch to add more fuel when the NOS is activated.
