i just got a copy of "american iron" may edition in the mail. you might want to get a copy and check out what coming down the tracks for the 2006 models. the regulations only apply to 2006 and later bikes, so maybe i had better read the article again before i do any mods to my new R.

This is a good point for everyone, right now the 02-05 bikes will be some of the last bikes made that you have free rein to do whatever you want and not worry about EPA regs.

Wow this is big news :hitfan: Hmm instead of going to crazy with the mods maybe it's time to increase the size of the bike stable!! Imagine if 2006 and later bikes have regulations on exhausts etc. performance :tmbsdow:

This is very bad news, although I knew it was coming sooner or later. Glad I have an '05. The EPA has already screwed the cars up, now I guess they are moving on to bikes. Even my weed eater has a catyletic(sp?) converter on it.

I don't get it...

How many people have modified their pipes? According to the manual, it's a violation of Federal EPA noise polution laws. Nobody cares.

How many people speed? Breaking the law there aren't we...

New laws comming online - break them like we break the rest... move on, nothing new.

i agree, that the ones already on the books are broken and whats new? the new laws however will probaly be felt. federal laws are not enforced by the police usually, but state laws usually follow.
unfortunately, the publics attitude toward motorcycles is going down hill too. more and more people are getting tired of the (in your face) attitude that many have. i did security at daytona bike week for many years and i saw that changing too. im not sure if it passed, but the citizens of daytona were hot on the city officials to do something about the noise and loud pipes last year. a law was drafted that would put teeth into floridas loud pipe law. the local ordanince would allow a big fine, plus impounding the bike. the florida version only allows a fine and points on your license. i heard some bikers say that florida cant enforce the muffler law without a decibel meter. not true! the law states that any modification of a vehicles exhaust is a violation.

If you live in an area like I do that uses IM240 and requires state inspection you would care. With IM 240 there is no good old boy system or overlooking anything. We have to plug a cars ALDL into a state link and the state scans the car, if it has been altered and fails to comply with O2 information or catylist information then the state rejects it. Now for cars we also have to put them on a dyno and run 5 gas on the exhaust and the state also monitors this. If any part of the car fails the car is rejected. Your simply not going to drive it around Texas long without a state sticker, the DPS has a hardon about those things.

So you say your state doesn't use IM240 yet, if it wants to keep getting federal highway funds it will have to in the near future.

Good point Brother :thumb: Yeah, F#@KEM' and there law.... Do what you want, you haven't broken any laws until you get cought :bat

I need to add as well that a large number of people were stuck with large bills when IM240 did hit the DFW metroplex. It started in the early 90's but failed to get full support until a couple of years ago when the area had to comply or have all highway funds cut off. At that point people had been altering systems for years. Now IM240 requires every car less then 20 years old to pass the 5 gas or be rejected. All cars built after 96 with OBDII are required to uplink to the state. So guess how expensive it can be to make some of these cars that had removed EGR systems and cats to now pass state inspection. Now you can pay a $500 waver the first year but the 500 must go towards getting the car to comply, on the second year there is no buy out. People that altered cars then started trying to dump them only to find that no one would give them anything for the cars because the cost can be so great to make a car comply after it had been butchered. Believe me this is not the same as your local exhaust pipe Nazi's and this is really a good thing for our kids and grandkids.

It's only going to get tougher. Max is dead on here. I couldnt make it to the freeway without the inspection sticker.

I have Gil's box and the VModded stockers..... I wonder what kind of issues I will face during my upcoming inspection........

Vrodtroy thats the great thing about owning an 02, there is no regulation on the 02 and the state will never check them for anything. The 06 motorcycle is like the 1975 car which was the first car to require cats if memory serves me. The state only requires that the motorcycle run at the standards at which it was set new. All bikes before 06 really had no standard and the 06 standards are very light. The 08 bike will be the first year of bikes with full cat back systems or that is my understanding. It will also be the 08 model that will make or break the air cooled v-twin for HD. All other companys that tried to keep there air cooled engines with cat systems such as porsche eventually gave up because repair cost was so high. Remember when they put a cat on they have to stand behind them 8/80 and on an air cooled engine they run so hot they were failing within 1-2 years and the cost of replacement of the system every year can break a company in a hurry.

Right on Max. Thanks my brother. These new standards are going to put the hurt lock on some motrcycle mods. Understandable but Jeez........

BTW, looks like a good day for polisihing the bike considering........

Yes nothing like a crappy rainy weekend, now were does that weatherman live? LOL

RI06SCR those items plus any map changes made and remember all OBDII stuff has a memory so plan on driving at least 35-50 miles with the old stuff to clear out any IM flags that are set.

Keep in mind though that in 08 the standard gets more like it is with a car and your going to have much tougher time getting the bike to run right without the emissions items on the bike and tampering with the ECM will be a much bigger chore. At that point I look for things like the race tuner to go away and items like the PCRIII will have that big off road only label put on them. There is also talk of emissions lasers for DPS. Thats right they can laser your exhaust as you go down the road and read the emissions you produce. I would look for that technology to advance and be more widespread as this gets more and more critical.

Working in a shop all day you can't believe how much cleaner cars are now then they were even 20 years ago. Clean air is not always such a bad thing and the technology that helps drive it has come up with some big performance gains as well. Just look at some of the engines produced today with exceptional outputs and very low emissions. And when people disable them sometimes they run worse then they do with them. We thought for years that the EGR was intrusive and worthless but now we find it is a great tool to keep cylinder temps down and knock down. This cloud really does have a silver lining.

Max, you are seriously a guru on this stuff. What are your thoughts on the Screaming Eagle pipes? They shouldn't be so different from stock that they won't pass emissions should they? Since they don't free flow as much. I'm just taking a WAG on this.

Emissions lasers! Man, what next?

As much as I like the standard Harley engine it's going to be a good day when we can take a shot at all the "traditionalists" who, if they want a new bike, will have to buy a liquid cooled one. A little payback for them dogging us.

Glad I have my 02 "A" The first, the best, the beautiful!, and I get away form those epa things.

I bought mine from the dealer with 16ga. Don't have stock pipes to switch back to!

Max,

Since you are our resident expert on this issue I have a question...

Why are they (EPA etc.) going after bikes which make very few emissions per mile driven anyway instead of going after things like diesel trucks. You can't tell me when a truck is shifting through his gears and leaving a cloud of black smoke behind that it's better for us than the bit of stuff that comes out of a V-rod.

Also, what kind of effect will the regs have on extreme mods, like a Super Kaz turbo kit? Will they basically eliminate the possibility of even using a modified bike for street use?
