Fellow 'Rodders.......

My project is finally far enough along to make the big reveal. I've always liked the look of the Buell XB fairing so when I found one on eBay I just had to give this a try. The mountings are all CNC machined and allow me to use the bottom triple tree bolt holes for stand-offs and use the stock Buell fairing mounting holes. This holds the fairing close to forks and I think it looks pretty sweet, and it turns with the handle bars!

OK, time for comments......good, bad, ugly. Let me know what you think!

I'll be tearing it back apart this weekend for photographs of the mounting if anyone is interested. Go eBay!

OK, OK.....Here's what really happened. My V-Rod and Buell were parked alone in the garage all winter and this what happened!!! He has his daddy's heart and his mommy's good looks! :angeldev:

Sorry Val,

It's all torn apart waiting on new pipes, new throttle body and swingarm air tank mods. I'll have to take a test drive to State College when it's done.

I've go to get ready soon, test and tune starts at Beaver Springs Raceway next weekend!

Thanks Kaz,

Same idea, two different approaches. Mine mounts to the triple trees and turns with the handlebars and I thought yours uses the stock Buell hardware with a tab welded to the steering neck. Am I right?

I think your fairing would work better for top speed runs since it is mounted to the frame.

I'm using a Zero Gravity double bubble windscreen, how about you?

Yes it's was allot more work and $$$ then your way! :banghead: You should really make that a kit for the genral public. The Buell stuff as YOU KNOW  is pretty CHEAP on e-bay!!!!I'd say you should be able to buy all the stuff and Your kit for about $500 or 1/10 what I paid!!!!!!!!!!! Great Job and just goes to show there is more then 1 way to skin a cat! :thumb:

P.S Yes ,Double Bubble, and good to "205mph Unofficial" so far!!!!!

Chance of filling in the open space just in front of the bars with a carbon-fibre panel?

It looks great from the front, but the side view IMHO shows a little too much hardware in the open space.

Design a panel that can be inserted there out of cardboard, spray it black or even silver to see what it would look like and how it works at speed. It could be tapped in for the try, and then if it works out, mount one from carbon fibre so it looks clean.

Would there be a space complication if this were attempted?

How about a shot from the riders perspective too, and then one from over the rear fender looking forward?

Would like to see how you mounted this, as it really enhances the look of the bike from the front.

Quite a pleasing addition to the VR.

Pics please!!

Rich,

Great ideas, if I could find someone to do it I thought a louvered aluminum panel might be cool. The bike has the VRSC drag bars on right now but I'm looking for something that will pull the bars even farther forward. Any suggestions?

I'll take more pictures and post them. I kept the original instrument pod and added a Stewart Warner Ultra shift light on top of the pod. The double bubble windscreen has plenty of room for everything in the cockpit.

Stay tuned.

Here's How it's Done

Here are the parts that are needed to mount the fairing. Looking at the picture from the bottom.....First is the hex fairing standoff that takes the place of the bottom triple tree pinch bolt. The fairing mounts to this through the front turn signal hole.

The short post next to the standoff is the turn signal mount. It's basically a shortened version of the HD turn signal relocation stud.

Now the thing that looks like a pair of spectacles is a three piece CNC part. It simply bolts to the triple tree in place of the stock headlight. The Buell "Bug Eye" headlights pop right in!

To secure The top of the fairing I used the V-Rod fairing mount clips and standoffs and had a little plate machined to take the place of the mirrors on the Buell.

Now for a message from our sponsors.....

I designed the parts with Autodesk Inventor. My son Matt who is a senior at SUN Area Technical High School took the files, imported them into MasterCAM and machined them on a Haas CNC mill. :plause: Can you tell I'm proud of my son?

That's it......Scott :thumb:

its great, when someone has the imagination to do something different! i put a buell S-3 faring on my x-1, but then so did a lot of other people!

I like the idea of the fairing over the windsheild. I could never decide which windshield I wanted based on looks and function. The right fairing could be left on and always look good. I started to think since this weather hasn't improved I'd lay up a fiberglass fairing. I was just having trouble wanting to get into so much work when you can buy a windshield for a couple hundred bucks. But, I could make it for the Rod and try to make it function (for tall people).
The only thing I don't like on the Buell is the twin headlights. It just needs to look a little more "Sinister". I really like what you've got over anything else I've seen tho!

I just have to say it looks marvalous (that was with my best Billy Crystal voice). :plause: :plause:

JSC,

I've looked at a couple of fiberglass fairings that have been made for race applications including a Buell XB copy without the headlights. Chip Ellis uses one, his headlights are just decals like NASCAR. You might try one of them and do a cyclops thing!

Anyone out there with a CNC setup that is interested in taking my files and making up some kits?

Scott

Hey Skyeye,

Looks great! What bars are you currently using? Are they stock? If so, what about using the H-D drag bars? looks like it would minimize the gap between the grips and the fairing. Just a thought. Again, Great Job!!
