:) It's not a HD product, but it's made out of the same material HD uses. Yeah it's pricey, but your rides won't be like "ok there's a gas station here, and I think I can make it to this one...but..." They'll be more like, "Man, I could use a break right about now...hmm, and I guess I'll top off. What a great ride!"

You might be able to find one on fleabay or something, maybe...

There is some pretty huge profit in those things. Though I would guess it's a pretty small market.
When I spoke to Rick who manufactures the tank the setup cost was 100k euro so it takes a lot of tank sales to recoup the setup and mold cost. The Ricks tank is using state of the art rotary cup molding and the tank starts out in seven pieces from what I understand.

I have no doubt the initial costs were very high. And as I said, it's a small market, so the per unit price has to be high in order to recover the investment. But the actual material and labor in each tank probably doesn't amount to chump change.
If the market was several hundred thousand units, they could be had for $20 each.

I doubt they have even covered the cost to make the tank yet. My guess is they won't do that for a couple of years and I doubt there were more then 70k bikes ever built with the small tank and of those I doubt more then 2-3k will ever change the tanks.

But those who did are no doubt very happy though! :)

I like these tanks so much, I put them in my bike and my GF's bike.

Great point..

What is the labor cost for H-D to install the larger tank, because I think the scope of this work goes beyond the DIY'er. Thanks!
I haven't peaked myself, but I would assume the 3.7 gallon stock tank must be designed to sit perfectly with the frame and under the seat... away from the exhaust and heat elements, etc.
A larger tank must required some mods to fit in the same place as the stock tank...no?

Brentley...behave! :hidesbeh:

Yes, the stock tank does fit in pretty snuggly, but it doesn't take up ALL the available space. That's where these aftermarket tanks come in. The manufacturer has figured out all the little nooks and crannies to assimilate into a tank.

Yes, there are a few little mods you have to do to the frame (flatten the skid plate) and you have to either remove, relocate or trim the right passenger peg mount, but that's it.

If you can change the oil in a car/bike and can read a manual, you can most likely swap out the tank! I was initially scared to change the oil in my bike, but I decided to give this swap thing a shot. If you have all the proper tools, the service manual, a bike lift, and a weekend (I'm being generous here), you can do it.

Seriously, it's a very straight forward job. And the cost of tools and beer for the job will still be less than labor at a shop!

I did my install by myself and I am definitely a DIYer. It is not that hard if you have the right tools. Buying all the tools necessary to do this install is still cheaper than paying someone to do it plus you get to know your bike and you are sure it is done right.

night rodder did you get the ricks tank or the unlimited enginering one? And where did you get that ignition switch. I like the new location.
