Anyone have any good links for a bigger gas tank for the D?
When I spoke to Rick who manufactures the tank the setup cost was 100k euro so it takes a lot of tank sales to recoup the setup and mold cost. The Ricks tank is using state of the art rotary cup molding and the tank starts out in seven pieces from what I understand. There is some pretty huge profit in those things. Though I would guess it's a pretty small market.
I have no doubt the initial costs were very high. And as I said, it's a small market, so the per unit price has to be high in order to recover the investment. But the actual material and labor in each tank probably doesn't amount to chump change. When I spoke to Rick who manufactures the tank the setup cost was 100k euro so it takes a lot of tank sales to recoup the setup and mold cost. If the market was several hundred thousand units, they could be had for $20 each.
The market is actually a lot larger than I thought.I doubt they have even covered the cost to make the tank yet. My guess is they won't do that for a couple of years and I doubt there were more then 70k bikes ever built with the small tank and of those I doubt more then 2-3k will ever change the tanks.
I haven't peaked myself, but I would assume the 3.7 gallon stock tank must be designed to sit perfectly with the frame and under the seat... away from the exhaust and heat elements, etc. What is the labor cost for H-D to install the larger tank, because I think the scope of this work goes beyond the DIY'er. Thanks!
I did my install by myself and I am definitely a DIYer. It is not that hard if you have the right tools. Buying all the tools necessary to do this install is still cheaper than paying someone to do it plus you get to know your bike and you are sure it is done right. What is the labor cost for H-D to install the larger tank, because I think the scope of this work goes beyond the DIY'er.
