I think I've got the winner. A couple of weeks ago, one of our local dealers was hosting demo rides. They required the demo riders to follow a store employee, who was on a Honda sport bike (that alone seemed kind of stupid to me). The employee I rode with appeared to be in his mid-twenties. He was doing wheelies and swerving all over the road, zig-zagging in and out of lanes, IN FRONT OF THE DEMO RIDERS HE WAS LEADING! Imagine if one of the demo riders got hurt! I can't believe that the owner of the dealership knew any of this was going on.

How come young guys who do wheelies on sportbikes are idiots, but middle-aged guys who ride without helmets are just fine?

Middle-age guys doing wheelies should probably wear helmets. I don't consider riding a motorbike reckless behaviour, but doing wheelies at 80mph in highway traffic probably is. Please don't consider those who cruise without helmets in the same category. It is a calculated risk (like driving a car, riding a bike, or taking a bath at old age) not reckless behaviour that endangers others.

Rich, you are right on the money. The surprising thing is how self righteous we all become when we can't do the same thing on our V-rods. Be honest. How many on this board wouldn't be doing wheelies from time to time if we could? I'll be the first to admit I would need to replace my front tire from dry rot before I wore it out.

Just watch the gallery. Everytime someone manages to photograph a V-rod on the rear wheel it gets posted and receives accolades from everyone. No doubt, there are a few members that would not be interested it doing wheelies. But, I'll bet the majority here are really jealous of the sport bike riders.

I agree Steve.

When I saw that guy take it up on one wheel it took me about 1 second to realize I'd never be that good (or crazy) but thought how cool and what a trip it would be to be able to do it. I just would choose better locations. From his perspective I'm sure the location added to the thrill not to mention doing it for our entertainment (possibly)

You guys should see the groups of fools we have here in San Diego. I think they all watched that "Biker Boys" movie too many times. Usually in packs of ten or more on the freeway, 3 or so will be out in front of the pack doing standup wheelies while the rest of the pack hangs back, takes up all the lanes, and slows down traffic like the Highway Patrol does to break traffic when they need to clean up the freeway, etc, etc. Some of the guys are pretty good, can pull a wheelie for a few miles at 90+ mph. And I've seen some of the guys waggle the bars hard and almost eat shit when they set it back down. That, I would of paid to see, especially if they took out a few of their friends at the same time. The CHP and PD's are pretty cool to the Harley crowd, I guess they figure you're either older, wiser, or richer, or all three (I could of bought a new GSXR1000 out the door for what I dropped as a down in cash for the VROD). It will just be a matter of time until law enforcement starts cracking down hard on all sport bikes, and ticketing anyone on one. Honestly, I wouldn't blame them if they did. These idiots ruin it for the rest, as most idiots do. Just my .02. Out---Cheatin'

I guess we all have broken the law by speeding so we're all hooligans to a degree. We're bikers. We don't like to be told what to do. Yet I would never ride a wheelie in traffic even if I could.
Some take that rebelious streak to an extreme and risk not only their own lives, but the life of a passenger or other motorists.
That's the crux of the matter.
As for helmets, I ride with a full face helmet 90% of the time, and now I have a half helmet for occasional rides like when I'll be in Daytona.
Occasionally, I have ridden helmetless.
I did just that on the 4th of July. Man did I feel FREE and felt a love for this country and Harley Davidson!

I used to ride helmetless all the time until they changed the law in California. Just my opinion, but I don't need the government telling me what to do in any aspect of my life. I'm not trying to start a debate, but if a woman can choose to have an abortion, I should have the right whether or not to wear a helmet. Besides, if the Angel of Death decides it's time to take his hand, all you can do is embrace him. Out---Cheatin'

Bummer. Maybe the Caleefornia riders can get the Terminator behind them to change it back. I know he had an alloy head, but the Terminator rode without a helmet.

I have witnessed on several occasions, reckless riders pulling wheelies in heavy traffic. What suprises me the most is that they usually are dressed in shorts and flip flops. I will be the first one to admit that I ride in warm weather with a tee-shirt and no leathers but I always have jeans and boots and helmet on. I watched a guy heading down US15 in Frederick just last week pull a wheelie at about 70 and ride it for at least a 1/4 mile. He had to slam on the brakes to slow down when traffic in front of us suddenly came to a crawl. I thought for sure he had bought the farm. He ended up on the shoulder and had he not gone there he would have slammed into the back of a minivan.

I would pay to see that too, lol. Out---Cheatin'

Coolbreeze, I've witnessed the same type of behavior on the beltway. They act as if they're in the movie "Biker Boyz". They don't realize or don't care what may happen to them if they have an accident or get caught by the police.

I was on the Beltway (I-495 in D.C) on labor day. The wife and I were returning home from a Family cookout near Landover, Md. I took Exit #11B south to Md State Road 4 South (Near Upper Marlboro), when I noticed two guys on motorcyles. One was in the right land and the other was in the left lane. They had traffic backed up because they decided to do burn outs in the middle of the highway. Of course they were riding crotch rockets. One was on a 2004 Yamaha YZF R1 (with the exhaust under the seat) and the other was on a Hayabusa. I wish the police would have witnessed this and took both of them to jail. But knowing them, they probably would've just out ran the cops. They weren't shy about pulling the stunt so why would they have any reguards for law enforcement?

I do hwy wheelies all the time on the gixxer....oh well, I guess I'm a dumbass.
But I can change lanes, signal, use my horn, go around curves so what's the
difference if I do it on one wheel? Hehehehehehe....better get my nomex on....

Yah, but you're not doing them in the middle of rush hour like most of these knuckleheads do?? Right??

I think the two situations are exactly the same. If someone is riding with no helmet on, they are exposing themself to getting a rock in the face or some other piece of flying debries.

A good percentage of us have probably been in a car/truck when a rock or whatever was thrown up from a vehicle in front and the rock cracked or put a small crater in the windshield.

What if you were riding with no helmet and that same rock hit you in the face? There's a good chance you might go down or swerve or something else to cause an accident.

Doing wheelies in traffic is dumb, so is riding without a helmet

Wish I lived closer, would like to see you do your stuff.

Wow! Never in a million years would I EVER HAVE DREAMT Harley riders would complain about Japanese Sportbike Riders tainting their image of bikers! :barf:  :hitfan: :hidesbeh:
