OK, I know the pipes/exhaust covers on this bike get hot and we should avoid contact but, I’ve managed to burn through my third pair of jeans today. Right leg is either touching or is too close to the pipe. I’m sure I’m not the only one this has happening to. I’m really not the “chap” wearing type and I sold my riding leathers with my last sport bike.

Has this happened to you?

What did you do to fix it?

Is there a riding pant/jean that won’t catch on fire that has worked for you?

Other than my smoldering and smoking right leg, I love my VRSCD!

Thanks in advance for your help!

can you put a guard over the spot on the pipe you make contact with?

Thanks, I’m interested in learning more. Got any recommendations or links?

Never happened to me. Have scraped my heels on the pavenment but never burned my pants on the pipes.

Ive got 3-6 pairs of of jeans with burnt holes in them on the right leg right at the calf... I wear carpenter blue jeans, Ive started folding the excess over and wearing a rubber band around the cuff... works pretty good and when I get off the bike I just undue it...

vrodderd,

I hear ya about the dragging of the heals. No doubt you've dragged a little pipe too on your VRSCD. Nice pic, is that Deals Gap?

ncvrodracer,

I'm glad im not the only one, I might have to resort to your pant leg mod if I don't come up with a bettter solution soon. Replacing jeans can be expensive! Nice posted times!

Just got my D and have burnt up my leg.....After riding sportbikes forever I'm used to tucking them in I think...but I have now learned to keep my legs out....I didnt care for the blister on my leg...haha

I've never had a problem with burning while my feet are on the controls. After I switched to my D&D pipe when I put my right foot on the highway pegs my calf rests against the rear headpipe.

I have burned the right leg on several pairs of jeans, I know this was a problem for the "R's" as well, HD put out a message on this and provided a part to prevent it from happening on the R.

Night Rods share several things in common with a R, namely exhaust and mid controls so I would think the "fix" for the R would work on our D's as well. Maybe somebody here has already thought of this and done it?

Hmm, never had an issue...I've even put my leg against the pipes to keep it warm on some cold rides.

Kerri, could it be because you ride in your leather pants all the time? LOL Oh BTW I got the grommet, THANKS!

I know of several D owners had this happen, MikeP comes to mind right away as one of the others in the burnt jeans club.

The MoCo put out a service recall for the "R"s. They add a new extended shield to the rear cylinder header pipe. I'm still waiting for mine to come in to the dealer, so they can install it. You get the touching/burning when at slow speeds, mostly under 30 mph. I got in the habit of swinging my knee out when at slow speed. I also add a velcro strap around my cuff when I'm going to be out riding all day. To be honest, since I V-Modded my pipes and added the PCIII, it runs cooler and I haven't burned any more cuffs.

I paid a visit to the service manager at my local HD dealer. He’s checking on this and he’ll confirm tomorrow in regards to a recall on the heat shield. Like a couple of the aforementioned posts stated, he confirmed that there was a recall/fix for the R’s and our mid set up could potentially cause the same problem and may be included in that recall as well. More to follow; when I get the verdict I’ll pass it on.

I guess we all have a “HOT” bike. Too Hot at that!

Ride Safe,

Ah but I don't...even in my jeans I don't have an issue.

Yup... but way down low for me. I think it's a "D" thing.

Are you guys getting this from using the highway pegs or is it from the mids?

I've been wondering that myself. I use both so hard to say.
