Gentlemen, allow me to jump right in (first post). I received a custom V-Rod at my shop that has a 280mm rear "kit". Stock V-Rods have a pulley/wheel arrangement that allows the pulley to "float" in rubber "bumpers" similar to what you old timers would find on the front belt pulley in the original Sturgis model (shovel). The pulley is NOT bolted to the hub. Anyway the Ricks/German ($$$) pulley and rim suffered extreme damage. The "studs" on the pulley snapped and the rims "cush drive" system is blown out. Can anyone tell me why the factory doesn't hard mount the pulley to the wheel? Does it have something to do with the transmission? Can you bolt down a rear drive pulley on these models? Has anyone done it? Inquiring minds want to know. Thank you! TK.
I have understood it to be an issue of horsepower...greatly reducing the likelihood of a rider (accidentally) bringing up the front wheel or spinning out dangerously.
Someone knowledgable...please feel free to correct me on this one.
The cush drive serves two purposes. The first is for what you feel of course, at low rpm with no cush drive the jerking at the wheel is very noticeable. The second is to save the trans. The jerking plays havoc with the transmission over time and will most certainly cause pre-mature failure of the trans and gears.
No the destroyer is direct drive with a chain as most of the very high horse models that are used for racing are. However BADROD I I think is still belt drive with the cush and pulled well over 200 hp on the dyno and runs 9's in the quarter.

I have also heard rumor that the prototypes had so much wheel hop from hard down shifts that the comp drive was added, plus all bikes shipped to Japan must have comp pulley's so it may have just been easier to do this for all models.

Max to the best of my knowledge and maybe its just on my Buell setup there is no cush drive. The pulley is directly bolted on the wheel hub. Only thing there is a billet spacer.
I have been running a direct drive chain setup on my bike with a 240 in the rear for 1.5 years now with no issues. Most of the 4000 miles have been on the street, not the strip.
I was told it had to due with dampening the pulses from the motor at low RPM. Never really bothered me at all.
So ThreadKiller, who are you? How about an introduction. You say you have a shop in Miami? I’m in Hallandale.
