2002 v rod shifter shaft

Hi All,
I have just bought an accident damaged V rod, bent forks, bent lower frame sections. radiators and other bits. The bit that concerns me is the shifter rod which is bent, I have read some posts which mention that its an easy job unless its an early V rod, can any one let me know what makes the early ones more difficult as I would hate to have to split the engine.

Many thanks.

A video on youtube does a decent job of showing how to remove it. I haven’t done it myself yet as I’m still trying to find the replacement shaft online so I don’t have to deal with Harley about it. Once I get the parts in I plan on doing it myself since most people claim it to be a simple 15 minute job. Curious to hear anyone’s thoughts on this video!

I'd be inclined on a pre 04 to lay the bike on it's side during the swap. No gravity to shift the spring mechanism out of the way. If it moves, most often the case will need to be split. Mid 04 and up, no problems as the spring has been lengthened.

Socket used to knock seal in appears to be too small a diameter. Should be closer to the O.D. of the seal. Too much risk of deforming the seal with a socket that size.
