I am In the process or stripping my 03 down to the from for powder coating and have a few questions.
I have seats, swing arm, and triple trees off so I'm left to the motor. Will the radiator have to be taken off from the motor or can I unbolt the front frame sections and lift the frame off the motor with out taking radiator off.
The bike has 14000 on It I got It with 12000 on It Feb 2010 and only have changed oil. So I have know idea what's been done and what's not been done. So my questions are should I do anything while the motor is off the frame. I was planning on changing plugs (what ones you guys recommend) should I check the valve lash. Anything more help with my rebuild would be appreciated
When I pulled my motor I left the bike on the wheels and pulled the engine out of the left side like the manual says. I did not lift the frame off, that does not work. You support the frame, then turn the engine and wriggle it out the left side.
And doing the valve lash now would be 100 times easier...but only if it is necessary...
If you are stripping to the frame for PC then you will be removing the engine, right? if that is true then you'll wanna get the radiator off the frame as well before pullin the motor..... did you say you had the swingarm off allready? what's supporting the engine out back? the rad is an easy removal, the few hoses are easy to dissconnect amd the wire harnesses all have plugs.... it may be possible to slip an engine out without removing the rad, but I'm guessing it's easier to remove the rad first?

That was certainly not the case with mine. Those radiator hoses were glued onto the radiator and were a real bitch to get off - just ask Scott... we became the kings of screwdriver pry-bars
I have the rod pushed back in holding it im polishing the arm with is why _ have it off already how do I know if the valve last needs done this is my first vrsc
You are Close to recommended lash check I myself would do it, the motor will be out and easy access. At least you will have a peace of mind if anything.
Learn all that you can about the procedure first. You have plenty of miles to go before it is truly necessary. Get a service manual, read the procedure. Search this website and read all that you can (example in post #6). Only after you have gathered all of the tools and knowledge should you begin the teardown.
I did mine at 20,000 miles and none of the valve lash measurements were off enough to worry about, even then. But I'm glad that I did it for the peace of mind. I could have easily waited until 30,000.
My next valve lash adjustment won't be until at least 50,000 miles.
