starter selonoid clicking but starter only sometimes turns over

Hey Guys, I gotta 02 v-rod and more and more often lately there is a hesitation of everything when I push the start button. Now, the starter selonoid is only clicking and the starter isn't turning over at all. Any suggestions? My thanks in advance.

...also, the battery good. Occasionally the starter will engage it cranks normally with no sluggishness.

Can you hear the solenoid clicking, or just the starter relay under the back of the air box cover? First things first, Id check connections, including earths....

remove and clean earth contacts on front head, and check the others on both heads, lower rear frame.if still try relay, theyre cheap.

Thats an easy one, if its like the issue I experienced on my 05 CVO its a relay on the fuse box. Dealer replaced the battery, Starter and cables. No fix. The relay is the same as the high beam relay if I am correct, so you can do a quick test then buy the part if it works. The PN is 31522-00C I now always carry a spare. I have replaced 3 in 9 years. Hope this solves your problem.

Yes I had the same problem on my 02 twice, was the starter relay on both occasions.

Having experienced exactly the same issue this week, mine was both a failing starter relay, and connections that had pushed through the plastic relay housing block. New relay fitted, and the wire connectors encouraged from the back to ensure tight contact, my problem has been resolved. Hope the OP has had similar luck; if not, check the female spade connectors have not been pushed away from the relay!
