What makes a coil go bad???

You know recently I picked up a zero mileage left over 06 Street Rod. I have a total of just under 600 miles on her. I had a problem with the bike running on 1 cylinder and it happened to be the coil. So my dealership replaced it with a new coil and plug.

My question is what would make a coil go bad so quickly???

Good chance that the coil wasn't bad, the odds are that the spring that stretches from the plug to the coil inside the boot was not making good contact. Or that is my guess. Usually coils that fail don't fail for a minute and then start working again which if I remember correctly that was what you experienced. But without having the bike first hand to check things thats just a guess.

Coils usually fail with age and heat, the resistance gets high in the primary side.

Well max then how does that spring that is suppose to be making contact with the plug get stretched out??? I saw them take the old coild off so I guess..hey I have a new one now.

I am hoping this is just some bad luck and not how things are always going to be on this bike. Pleeeeeeeeez I work way to hard for my money to buy something that is always going to give me heart break......The crazy thing is I still love this bike to death!!

Spring doesn't start out stetched out enough. In other words, its a bit to short (sometimes) to make good contact. You can gently remove the lower 'boot' (bottom of coil assembly) to expose the spring. Stretch it slightly to increase the contact tension when it is reinstalled. If you have the old coil you can try this and see how easy it is.

i haven't had a coil go out on anything in about 12 years. Doesn't happen too often.

I have seen coils right out of the box break down under heat and be intermittent, but I do have to agree with Max they don't usually do that. One in about 30 years is what I call a fluke, and that's all yours sounds like.

I had one go bad around 10kmiles. I stretched the spring like you wouldn't believe. It did nothing.

Side note. Don't buy a 99-01 volvo or you'll be replacing coil packs often.
