need help- where to start??

mods, if this is the wrong spot, please relocate -

my friend has asked for my wenching skills in hopefully getting this bike back on the road. she bought a 97 harley flh dresser with 130k miles on it from her dad.

it does not run. her dad said he stopped for gas and started riding it, the bike cutoff on him and coasted to a stop.

i am going to try to get the bike running. im thinking its gotta be an electrical issue. i was going to check the battery, connectors, and starter switch first.

with this information (i know its not a lot) where should i start with this bike?

its an air cooled harley, so how hard could this be??

130K is a lot of miles, does it turn over at all, along with your list I'd check to see if its getting fire at the plugs and fuel could be a clogged carb

Spark, gas, air. pull the plugs, crank it over. spark ok? Look in care. is it squirting gas? Without boom,
should be easy to figure out. explosions are different! Good luck. Joe

Give it a shot of ether,if it fires on that then it's not getting fuel.Shutoff off? Defective? Accidentally hit kill switch? Sometimes it's simple.

I am leaning towards an electrical issue..if it just "died".. if it were a gas problem it prolly wouldda spit and sputtered before not running...if it were a compression issue <130k> I think it would have started giving trouble awhile ago..sounds like it lost juice..check battery voltage and connections to the battery..dirty? if it cranks over, pull the plugs and check for spark..its not rocket science.

just curious, once started and running, can a motorcycle have its battery removed and still stay running?

My dad had a similar problem with his 2000 super glide. I believe he said the fix was a cam sensor or a sensor of some sort. From what he told me it was not that uncommon of a problem.

I know the older models could and would..pre computerized..my '72 norton,if the battery was weak or dead..i could kick it over a dozen or so times and it would fire because it had points <now has pointless ignition> and the altenator would generate enough juice to make spark and keep it running

Injection or carb model?
With that info it could be something as simple as water in the fuel.
I can't remember if bikes that old had a neutral safety ,but is the neutral light lit when it's in neutral?

ok, so i got the bike over to my house today. it is in need of lots of tlc but my main focus is to get some electricity through it, then ill tackle the spark plugs, fluids etc

the battery reads fine on a meter. i took it out and it looks fairly new. i checked the ground points where the battery cable go to and they read fine but were dirty so i sanded them and cleaned them up. still read fine on the voltmeter.

i checked all the fuses and they were fine.

there is no sign of life on the bike, no lights of any sort. no neutral, no fuel pump noise, nothing.

im done with it tonight but tomorrow is a new day.

it is a carb model.

below is what im working on, sorry for the crappy photo
any thoughts?

Check voltage down the line from the battery. Power to the switches?

With a lack of lights, I'd say your initial suspicion of electrical is on target. Now it's just a matter of being systematic through the wiring harness.

Maybe put a meter on the master fuse, just to be sure...

Have you got power into and out of the fuse box?
Maybe the system relay?
