Garage Door Opener Install

I saw a thread around here somewhere (that I couldn't find again ) where a guy installed a garage door opener on his v-rod. He put a switch (he said from O'Rielly's Auto Parts but I couldn't find one there like what he pictured ) on the back side of the horn cover. Since I couldn't find the thread again I had to figure it out for myself how to install my own garage door opener. So here goes...

I searched a few places to find a somewhat weather resistant switch. I checked out auto parts places, auto parts websites, and Radio Shack with no luck. Then I hit my odometer switch at a gas station and I went "DING", there's a switch!

HD numbers 67854-98 for the switch and 67880-94 for the boot. You must get both. The boot is actually the nut that holds switch in place.

Done this two years ago and no issues. I can post a pic of where I mounted it on the right side if you want. That way as you roll up you let off the throttle side and dont need neutral .

Next I tore open the garage door opener and sliced off the PC board. I found the holes in the board where I would wire it up to the switch. I used telephone wire but maybe a single conductor wire would have been better. It just has to be small enough to fit into the holes in the board. The small wires in the telephone cable are very delicate, but I had the perfect wire strippers for the job.

You'll see that I did not put it on the horn cover in a few more posts.

Location! Location! Location!

So there's already one of these switches under the clamshell, why not another one?

There's plenty of room under the instrument cluster of the R. I don't know about other models. You may need to find your own place.

I drilled the new hole with the handy dandy step drill. Slid the switch through making sure that I cleared the cluster, or that would have been a cluster! And bolted it in place.

Then I wrapped it with a nitrile glove and closed it off with electrical tape and stuffed it inside under the bar risers.

Voila! My garage door opener is operational!

Yeah, Mike. I didn't want to spend the $$ for the HD hi-beam setup. Cost for this option: $14.52 plus tax. Quite low for HD parts IMO. But, I'll take it!

We'll see how it holds up under operational conditions over time. It worked perfectly today.

An added benefit is that the flash2pass (or HD version) only has about 15' range. I have to pull right up to the door to use it. It would be much better to hit your button while heading up the drive.
