Pulley Question

I have an 06 VRSCD Night Rod. I want to convert from a 28t to 30t for an upcoming ride. My question is will the pulley off an 03 Rod fit on my Bike?

No.

The output flange was changed in 2004 when the 28T front sprocket was introduced (the arms are shorter). Although a 2002 and 2003 front sprocket (or pulley, P/N 40341-01) will fit, it won't be properly supported by the output flange arms. You need to get an early version HDI (international model) front sprocket (P/N 40341-04).

Yes it will fit. I swapped my 03 flange over to an 04 many years ago and ran a 28 tooth front sprocket for years with many passes down the drag strip, then swapped it back over to the 30 tooth for street riding, with a lot of spirited riding. No issues at all on the 1350 big bore setup. The bolts provide the support and center the sprocket on the flange.

My post is based on how the parts were designed and machined. I mentioned that the sprocket will fit but it's not designed to center by the bolts. Even slight misalignment will cause an eccentric rotation that will damage the output bearing. You've just been lucky with what you've done.

For the flange finger tips to provide any kind of support to the pulley would require very close tolerances between the two parts and the pulley to be pressed onto the flange. It fits on easily and there is actually some play in it before the bolts are installed. I have seen where several folks have installed the 04 flange and swapped the pulleys back and forth with no issues.

The price of the international pulley compared to the older American is completely different.
