Please HELP!!!!! 04 Vrod Issues

I have an 04 V Rod with 7900 miles. Was running great when I put it up last winter however my past couple tanks of gas its as if the bike is drinking it. Went from getting 40ish mpg to 14.5 mpg. I also have increased valve chatter and a loss of torque in first gear above 4500 rpm. The only thing different I have done to the bike is change the oil. Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks

The only time my V Rod started guzzling gas like that was when I lost an ignition coil period but it felt like it was running at about half power all the time while that bad boy was dead. Obviously that would have nothing to do with the oil change.

Also I know my bike gas gauge has been inaccurate since I got it, so just make sure you either look in the gas tank for gas or do the math in terms of numbers of gallons you're putting in. Sorry if I'm completely wrong or sound stupid I don't usually post advice , but for a change something sounds familiar to me :-)

Interesting. It also starting pulsing in and out of power while under constant throttle on the highway at about 70 mph.

have you ever just taking the ignition coils out and tested them it's pretty easy if you have a multimeter.

Unlike my truck whose primary and secondary coil resistances did not match my chiltons manual, my V-Rod did I ended up buying one off eBay for about half the price of the ones at the Harley shop.

Sounds like a possible fuel injector(s). Sounds like you are describing surging. Put a cleaner in the tank is another idea.

I second checking for codes. I forgot all about that, it's been a while since i did it, but it pointed me towards my issues.

I would change the plugs first and check ground connections(the negative from battery to front cylinder head gets corroded sometimes from sitting in storage) start with the basics

You take out the ignition coils in order to change the plugs, so might as well.test them too, but plugs are cheaper than my hourly rate so i would probably change them too while I had it all apart.

Codes - free
Gas tank cleaner - a few dollars
Ignition coil test - free if u have multimeter, else borrow one from automotive parts store
Spark plug replacement - a few dollars

I haven't changed fuel injectors so I can't talk to that, but makes sense too.

Lol. That's what I meant. I don't even know what tank cleaner is. I use water and dawn whenever I've cleaned a tank.
