Vance & Hines 17535, do I need a programmer?

Hi folks, I just won an eBay auction for the Vance & Hines 17535 2 into 1 exhaust system for my 2006 Street Rod. It is brand new in the box, and I picked it up for just under $400, including shipping, which seems like a pretty good deal to me. This was one of the exhausts I liked the sound and look of when I researched exhaust systems on line, the other being the D & D Fat Cat. I'm hoping I like the sound of this exhaust, but if I don't, I will probably go back to my stock drilled exhaust. My main reason for changing was to lose weight and the bulky look of the stock system.
What I need to know is, should I buy a programmer of some type immediately, and if so, is there a particular one that works best with this exhaust system? Is this also a good time to modify the air box, (topless?)? Are there any other mods that should go along with this exhaust system change?
Thank you in advance for your help. Mark

Programmer: Yes. Ultimately the quality of the tune means much more than the actual programmer used. I use a PCV from fuel moto.

Airbox lid: No. Does nothing for you but make it louder. If you want louder, then yes, but the tune is then more urgent as it will alter AF ratios throughout the rev range.

HogNot,

Let me know if those fit and post some pics if you can. I called Vance & Hines and they claimed they do not make any exhaust for the VRSCR. Best of luck!

The V&H 17535 was made specifically for the VRSCR (and Night Rod) but is no longer in production which is why there are some pretty sweet deals out there, but am seeing fewer lately. PN 17555 was made for the Night Rod but will fit the Street Rod with a minor modification to the bracket. The V&H is much louder than stock but not excessively so and I like the looks a lot better. Ran horribly till I added the Power Commander V. No more dead spots or stalling but like Mikeinatlanta, I had it dyno'd.

Definitely buy at Fuel Moto. They will send it with an appropriate map, and their support is the best should you need to modify the map, or make subsequent changes to the bike.
