I live in Central PA and this doesn't shock me in the least. The Harley factory has been swirling around the drain for several years. They've down-sized the plant considerably and have laid off 100's of veteran workers in favor of temporary workers (York County prisoners on work release) in order to save money. It has blown up in their faces. 1. Screw up after screw up. 2. Having to bring in veteran workers on the weekends (1.5 Saturday and 2 Sunday pay) to fix the screw ups made by the temps, thus costing Harley more money. Purchasing cheaper parts overseas. Etc., etc.. They just had a huge clutch problem a few months back and had to shut down the lines for several weeks because they bought cheaper clutch assemblies that turned out to be faulty. Sheesh...what a mess.

They have a bunch of "corporate" types pulling strings now. Bottom line guys that adhere to stockholders satisfaction FIRST. It's evident in decision making and especially in the circus type dealerships being built and releasing of old school dealers.
Loafers and dockers dominate the boardroom where once engineers boots and "workies" roamed. You can see the results.

It's too bad to see the jobs leaving the York plant, and I'm sure the surrounding area will see a hit, but I'll bet it's hard for H-D to justify dumping more money into that plant when there's a seemingly better solution down in KC.

Meanwhile, the "Steel Toe Tours" down in KC are cancelled as far out as the schedule allows. Must be some big changes happening down there to just eliminate the on-the-floor tour.

Probably has something to do with the announcement of "50 new models in the next five years"
