I was still undecided on whether or not to do this check, but after reading all 165 comments in this thread, I'm encouraged, amused, and convinced I should do it. Thanks to everybody that posted, especially Philthy for "riding around chewing ass-crackers, worrying about a burnt valve" ...priceless!
FWIW, if I had a pit crew and a human jack I might consider pulling the engine, but this will be a solo job for me. I'm not sure what more I could add to all this, but I will take some pics and post up about my experience when I'm done.

nice. shoot rsc a pm and get his number and he can walk you thru the procedure. as far as shims are concerned get a set of hottoppers 10mm shims and whatever you don't use talk to rsc about him possibly taking them off your hands when you are done. i don't remember where we got the hottoppers shims from.

Same kit here for $10 less. http://www.jcmotors.com/p-31903-hot-...x#.UI6F3u5Z6hQ
It looks like most people are using those even though they go in larger increments than the HD shims. .05 vs .025mm. I don't have a lot of riding planned for November so I'm just going to open it up to check the clearance and let it sit for a while if I need shims. It shouldn't take much more than a week to order just the ones I need at $2.49 each. Maybe I'll get lucky and they will be within specs.

I finally got started on my valve lash adjustment last weekend and 5 valves were out of spec. - all 4 exhaust and 1 intake. I picked up new shims on Wednesday and finished up the job today. With a service manual, a few tips from here and about 10 hours quality time with my bike, I knocked this out and saved myself about $400. I spent $95 for gaskets, shims and sparkplugs, and $160 on tools.
In the process of doing this job I also found another issue with the cooling system that would have left me on the side of the road within a few thousand miles. With the $ I saved doing this myself I can buy those parts too and still be ahead. I'm so glad I decided to take this one on.
Thanks to everybody that contributed to this thread.
