Yes, the fan is loud. With stock pipes the fan seems generally louder than the bike from what I recall (been awhile since I have had stock pipes).
As far as break-in, I have heard a couple opinions on the matter but man people say not to 'baby' them too much. This doesn't mean keep it red-lined all the time but you definitely do not want to be 'lugging' this motor. Also, I personally believe that you should consciously vary your RPM's the first several (500?) km. What I mean is, especially if you are on a long ride do not sit at 4,000 RPM the whole time - shift up and shift down.
Just drove home my new/used 2007 DX with only 370km. As it has such low kms I was wondering if there was any procedure to "break in" the engine? More to the point, is there anything I shouldnt do?
It is my first liquid cooled Harley and as I was driving home the cooling fan went off. It was loud. Are DX fans generally loud?

Check your owner's manual, in the index under "break-in procedure". Gives you step-by-step instructions on how to handle the first 500 miles. It was rough minding my P's and Q's for those first 500, but I figured HD should know best how to break the engine in to ensure long life...
Oh, and about the fans....wait until it's 90 degrees outside, you are sitting at a light, and the thermal fans kick on....feels like someone just opened an oven on your thighs!! One of the minor inconveniences of owning this fantastic bike...
Dont baby it, and dont hammer on it. I say just ride it like a normal person would ride it. Dont let the motor lug, thats probably the worst thing you can do. After a few rides open it up for a couple of spirited passes when its safe to do so.
These bikes are for those that like twins messing around between your legs.
I bought my '12 in july with 19 miles from the dealer (test rides) and didn't beat on it but as I read on here I did a lot of up shifting and downshifting and varied the rpm's a lot the first 500 or so miles. Over my trip to maine and back it didnt use a drop of oil after the first service.
Now I ride it like I stole it, even do a few burnouts leaving stoplights lol
Most important thing is that you first warm up the engine properly before you push the bike...not only in the 'breakin-period' but always!
This is very important ! But as we say don't baby the motor! To me it's like a race motor RPM's have to be up to run properly! 4-5 g, mines with 2-1 at least 5500 now after 8800 miles since June . Love it!!!!
