Help with Resistor type fuel gauge sending unit

Has any body tried to install the 2006 VRSCR 5 gallon fuel sending unit into any other model bike. I have a 2006 VRSCD with a UE 5 gallon tank. When I first installed the UE tank the gauge was working fine other than it was not very accurate because the shape of the UE tank has more volume in the bottom versus the original 3.8 gallon tank, IE the gauge says 1/4 tank when there is really 1/2 tank of fuel left. Now that my gauge is really shot, It constantly floats all over the place and winter is here I want to replace it. The VRSCR sender is $161 retail Versus $279 retail for the VRSCD sender. I have found the R sender for under $100 at New Castle Harley. Not to bad considering the D unit is $222. Now the big question is, does any body know if both senders are the same overall length. If nobody knows I'm just going to by it and give a try. Yea I know every body says use the trip odometer and I do all the time. I'm just sick of looking at a random pointing gauge. And I know the gauge works fine if the resistor strip works.
I believe the D model is one of the finest VRSC models to date!
