: Do you want your seat re-covered or re-worked?

I have hooked up with a person in florida that makes custom seats for all model motorcycles. His signature is faux ostrich skin, but will use any cover material you want....

well......

I have it set up with him so the first member that answers to this thread (and needs their seat recovered) will get thier seat re-covered for FREE !!! :D

He is willing to do this for me and the rest of the members here. It is no more than 5 days turn-around service. After you get the seat back I only ask that you post up pictures of his work and share your opinion on quality and workmanship.

Send me a PM if you have any question.

happy trails, sharkey

you my friend are the quickest on the trigger finger.

what I would like to do is have pictures of the seat posted before you send it to him. then the pictures of the re-covered seat can be compared.

I got your PM and will answer it.

If this works out I will have a connection for a great $ and fast turn-around time. :D

thanks

trigger finger just a tad rusty on this one..... sorry

my goal is to have a person work with the VR seats and custom design whatever the customer wants.

he does custom stiching as well as recovering and custom foam.

I will keep in contact with members about the deal in this thread.

Do you have an idea of pricing he charges? Or a website where we can see his work?

Sharkey
04-03-2008, 11:54 AM
right now I would like to get the first seat done and let the members see it.

I don't know if he has a web site but I sold him some heat shields for his exhaust and we started talking.... I can get a good feel for a person when it comes to listening to them try and sell me something so he offered out to do a seat for free and I am just taking it to the next step.

He is sending me photo's of his work and I will post them up on this thread.

That's a smart idea to do a free set for a member to get his name in front of people and to show the work he can do on a V-Rod.

Thanks for hooking us up with this (and everything else) Sharkey!

Sharkey, thanks for setting this up! A few months back I replaced my AW fender with an 07D fender and the seat just doesn't flow quite right. I've been shopping around my local area for shop to shave the seat down a bit in order to get it to flow a little better. This was right on time.

I'd like to get the passenger pillion and seat shaved down an inch all around and recovered in black leather and if possible, I'd like a Willie G. Skull set in the seat somehow.

Is that too much?

He will take your seat and cut it down 1" and totally re-cover both passenger and driver seat with black real leather and tool in the Willie G. skull designs... He wanted to know if you want the stitching in the seat to color match your bike???

The cost for this is $60.00 ---- Since this will be his first seat for the members to check out he came up with this price.

$40.00 for the Willie G. skulls & $20.00 for the black leather.

If you want it re-shaped and covered in ostrirch skin it will be free.

just let me know what you want to do.

This is an intro price, or the price it will be when we all decide to order? That's a great price IMO.

Sharkey also any plans for him to put some memory foam in there as well? I'd love to have mine cut lower, also cut so I can sit farther back, put some foam in there, real leather and willie g skulls.

Thanks again for another nice service Sharkey.

yes Doc this is an intro price. I am going to let his work speak for itself. I do not know exact pricing but I will post up when his work is in the hands of members.

He absolutely works with sculpting foam, and memory foam. Member KD2 is getting his seat ( 2pc.) re-foamed and covered with real leather and tooled with skulls, and member Night Rodder I believe is going to visit him persanally...
This will be a good determination of the skills and quality ( of wich I have no doubt about) The seat has a plastic base so staples are used to secure the covering. On steel or fiberglass back plates the covering gets rivited...

Of course each member will communicate with him directly on what their needs are and can go from there.

I have no problems what-so-ever helping any members out.

happy trails, Sharkey

I'm hoping that's just due to the Ostrich, or the type of seat, or something. It'll help to see a V-Rod (or any smooth surface) seat I think.

Sharkey
04-04-2008, 05:26 PM
I agree.... seems the ostrich skin is bumpy from the looks of these photo's. I also will be waiting to see the workmanship on the VR seat K2D is sending. It will be done with black leather and have the tooling.

I have before pictures of the seat and will post them up when it has been recovered for comparision.

I agree, but it is a big seat and not of the same styling for what he will be doing with the VR seats.

what I have done is created a folder from this thread on all the inquires about what the members want done. I will help the dude out and keep track so when it comes time to post up his work, everyone who had questions on their seats will get answers....

K2D will probably be shipping his seat mon or tue and hopefully after a quick turn-around he will be able to post up the work....

To each their own, and remember that he can use any material for the seat cover... some just cost more than others..

Hmm, is it me or do they look kind of bulky/lumpy?

also, when you are looking at the seat this guy has done, it is a touring seat... the owner probably asked for more padding. i know there was a huge difference between the stock road king seat and the super nice and plush mustang touring seat that i had on my 04 king.... give him a chance, hell its free and if K2D doesn't like it, i'll swap with him.

BTW if anyone wants to donate a stock 07 or 08 seat to me so i can play with making a pan for a 1 piece seat, i would appreciate it.

If this is the company over in Palm Coast,I've seen some of the finished work and prices. The seats I saw were old school tractor seats, the price was less than half of what most companys charge and the finished product was impressive.
Like I say,if this is the same company,I'd like to have my 103rd Badlander covered in leather with the bar&shield embedded.

curley, I had the same experience with a local guy in Houston. He did a nice job reworking my seat but after only a few months the seams started breaking. When I went back to see him, he had relocated and I never found him. There must be some weather resistant thread they use on these seats to keep them from breaking.

Kristi, it goes with the whole picture. The lowest price means that somewhere cuts had to be made. I'm all for everyone to make a reasonable profit. The really good business have all the work that they can handle. Not being in Fla I have to go by the experiences of people who have done business with the company. My seat was done real inexpensive. $65.00 + s/h $35.00 more. the stiches should hold if enough material is folded back for the sewing machine to work with. The thread should be strong, not cotton fibre. By the way AmorAll will disolve most thread material. Found that out on a TR-6 convertible top....

What kind of material is used there?

Sharkey
05-01-2008, 11:51 AM
The seat cover on the top is ostrich skin (vinyl) and the sides smooth vinyl.

He attached the 2 pcs. and tapered the back lower, narrowed it 1" on each side and added 1/2" memory foam, and embroidered the Willie G. skull.

The seat with no embroidery work is $300.00 (custom fitted) and $350.00 with embroidery.

Let me know if these prices are in line. I am not making a penney on this deal. It is to hook members up with a dude to work their seats they are not happy with.

Really? It looks OK, but there are some lumpy areas, not smooth. The seams look quite crooked also, like the cover doesn't fit over the padding well. It doesn't give off a finished appearance IMO, maybe a C+. There's even some areas on the top where there is extra leather that wasn't stretched just kind of sticking up. I know I'm not stepping on any toes here Sharkey as I know you didn't personally make the seat, but it definitely looks home made to me.

I think that there is room for improvement. I think that the seat looks real good and the skulls are a nice touch.

spinedoc is really close on his evaluation. The seat covering just doesn't seem to want to fit tight on all the foam.

probably it will ride great and it looks very comfortable. the 2 pcs attached are done proffesionaly & and looks very strong. I will be shipping the seat to you on monday. please let us know what you think....

thanks

Are there any good steps and pics of how K2D made the seat 1 piece?

That seat don't look all that bad.I'll bet the cover might fit tight after it's been in use for a while.I don't like the picture on it.

I don't think the seat dude took any pictures while he was making the seat for K2D. I will check with him on monday.

when evaluating this seat I am comparing it to a top dollar seat and trying to be as critical as possible. I will say that about 5 people in the shop have seen it and were impressed.

what I was wondering is if the price was in line for the seat work????

also once K2D gets the seat from me maybe a couple pictures with it mounted on the bike would be good.

I will certainly take pics and post them as soon as I get the seat mounted up and have some impressions on comfort and fitment.

I had my seats done by a local shop here in murfrresboro tn. Melinda Rush at N-Motion Upolstery ,(615)867-6693. She did an awsome job. Ostrich on top , pleather on the sides. $140 for all three seats.

Theres a HUGE difference between this seat and the one Vshop has. Smokedogs seat is "tight", that's all I can describe it as. It fits well and looks professionally done. The other seat does not even look "ok" to me.

Can you post up some pics of the underside so I can get another idea of how to make a one piece out of mine?

This sounds like a good deal....

the main reason for starting this thread was to help members get proffesional quality seat work at a reasonable cost. :D

Seat is in. Thanks. I already mounted it and found I need some adjustments made so I've got a request in for his thoughts. So once it's done right I'll get some feedback and pics posted.

Smokedog, your seat looks VERY good. As for the one that this thread was about, All I can say about that one is that it was successfully changed into a 1 piece seat.

It seems that whoever this guy is he is satisfied, or unable to make the big time with more business than he already has. Any one else knows a good seat man just kidding LOL..

NO GOOD DEAD SHALL GO UNPUNISHED.......

Well besides punishing the dead :stilpoke: , we're not punishing Sharkey, who is an awesome guy who passes on his savings to us. The seat just looks like ass, there's no way around that, certainly not Sharkey's fault.

You know, I really love this place, but after reading some of the comments I gotta stand up for the guy who did the seat.

Bottom line up front, I think people should relax and wait for the seat to be done. The guy has put a helluva lot of effort into a seat for $40 bucks and tried to do it as quickly. Holy crap, from some of the remarks that were made you'd think that people were expecting a seat like bitchin's for 1/3rd the price.

Seriously, Sharkey set this deal up (Thanks by the way Sharkey) and linked me up with the guy who did the seat. The guy is new to vrods, joined this site to try to find a niche that is largely being ignored right now (seats for 07-08 rods) and instead of us encouraging the guy by delivering more constructive criticism he basically got lambasted.

I take some blame for him. For his first crack at this I could've just asked for something easier, like just recovering the seat.

Instead I went balls deep and asked him for not only a one piece, but embossing / embroidery, shaving the seat and new foam.

For those that don't care for the aesthetics, that was my choice, don't burn him for that. He took my ideas and ran with them. He took his first crack at it (which was a little more complicated since I'm running a 180 size fender on a wide frame bike so the shaving had to be done just right.) and apparently there's a good reason why there aren't more companies making custom seats for rods for around $300.

In the end, I sent him some pics of the fitting and he asked me to send it back so he could make it right. I didn't have to ask and after several phone conversations with him I think he's a stand up guy who's doing the right thing and is working on the seat to get it looking like I want it. That's what's important, cause if it was your seat, you'd want it right to.

Hell, minus the fitting issue I had, that seat was damn comfortable and I can't wait to get it back. So cut the guy some slack and wait for the final product before passing judgment.

I'm not bashing him at all, but I can see where you are coming from. I definitely provided some constructive criticism and specifically stated what was wrong with the seats construction. I thought that was the final product, if it's not then I will definitely wait to see what the final product looks like. In this same thread someone posted a pic of a redone seat for $140 that looks pretty flawless to me, no lumps or anything.

For me I feel like I'm helping out the forums more by pointing out what a seat shouldn't look like, than if I had to coddle some budding seat builder. Have him give it another shot, maybe with the first one out of the way he knows what not to do and the 2nd seat will turn out great.

For $140 now this is a seat that came out beautifully. I'll be sending my seat out to these guys

sometimes, how you handle mistakes is more important than what you actually do. Sounds like this guy is making it right. With a little practice he may have a line of folks. I am guessing he wanted the practice, thats why he offered to do the work so cheap. Outside the box thinkers are what built this site, lets give this guy a chance.

By the way I just got my seat back from Amss, and this thing rocks. the guy got it done fast too. The USPS on the other hand not so fast, but definately not Amss fault. By the way anyone need a sundowner for an R? PM me.

True, it is a great looking seat, but let's not forget that the one pictured is a recovering, not a custom rebuild.

Thanks for the post though and the points you made in the previous posts. I'm confident that the second shot will match his vision for the seat as well.
