: Upsman Interview
kspz3 08-12-2004, 09:59 PM Rob - You have posted some background info on Project V your race program so I am going to skip some of the basics - but we will need to post some links to those threads including some of those great movies - But let's get started - How long have you been racing - what bikes have you raced in the past. How do you like the VROD as compared to other bikes that you have raced? What track are you racing at? How are you doing in the points? I understand that you are trying to win the championship - how are things looking for aachieving your goal...

UPSMAN 08-13-2004, 01:52 AM [QUOTE=kspz3]Rob - You have posted some background info on Project V your race program so I am going to skip some of the basics - but we will need to post some links to those threads including some of those great movies - But let's get started - How long have you been racing -
My brother & I have been at this one way or another for 15 years or so. The last 7 to 8 serious.
what bikes have you raced in the past.
3 or 4 different bikes early on, but got serious with a 1985 GS 1150 E, about 7 years ago
How do you like the VROD as compared to other bikes that you have raced?
We have been going pretty fast the last few years, the top speed we have been able to get out of this bike as prepared was 125. Which makes me rest much easier. I like just wiping it off, and waiting for the next round. We are really having a blast with our NEW fans stopping by the pit as well. We are very impressed w/ the power of this bike. Lots of fun to ride as well.
We are learning about twins as we go. Thank goodness for H-D techs!
What track are you racing at?
Mokan Dragway, in Asbury , Mo http://www.mokandragway.com/index.html
How are you doing in the points? I understand that you are trying to win the championship - how are things looking for aachieving your goal...
here are the top few as of last weekend
1. Mike Lewis 508
2. Tim DeCow 392
3. Aaron Barragar 381
4. Bruce Barragar 363
5. Kevin McRay 319
6. Ryan Pemberton 217
7. Kennie Johnson 136
pretty good lead. First time a Harley has been in this position since the beginning of the Motorcycle points program, but we don't count chickens.....every round is the championship round with us.
FYI we do not own this bike. It is owned by Cycle Connection H-D , Buell

and I will make an anouncement in the near future concerning plans for next year. Some cool events happening this weekend . I hope to have info and pix to share after.
kspz3 08-13-2004, 10:31 AM Upsman - Let me confirm - that number one spot is Project V (i.e. you) - What are the other riders on...... Also - you have a unique tag line about off track performance - what does that mean - how does it relate to your race program and personal/preofessional life? When you do your announcement we could post it on VRODRacing.com - I have news sections just waiting...... and what is the highest speed that you have ever gone in the quarter mile (any bike)?
UPSMAN 08-15-2004, 12:27 AM Upsman - Let me confirm - that number one spot is Project V (i.e. you) - What are the other riders on.
1. Mike Lewis 508
2. Tim DeCow 392 on a Kawie outlaw no-bar 750. His first real drag bike, and he is doing it right , by having fun. Runs in the 13's and loving it .
3. Aaron Barragar 381
Mid 80's GPZ 1100 small tire bar bike. Runs and 11 flat pretty consistantly
4. Bruce Barragar 363 - Aaron's dad, a clean little Kawie 9.90 bike , runs it at 10 0's pretty good - this man took the points from us last year after our Zuk blew up.
5. Kevin McRay 319 - pretty good little Zuk 1100 9.90 bike. It runs in the 9.6 range too. He will reel us in some if we have enough rounds left for the year. good on the light and ET. Nice guy. Family comes w/ him.
6. Ryan Pemberton 217 this is Ryans first quicker bike. Runs in the 9.7's a lot , but has its moments in the low 10's as well. He is working it out.
7. Kennie Johnson 136 ( another UPSMAN) Kennie makes what races he can and runs a stead flat 10 evry time on a Zuk 1100 bar bike. You must cut a light on kenny to get him. and it's not easy.
Have several more that come weekly and more that come when they can, Troy Brown runs Todd martins old Funney bike here, Jerry Cobaugh on his NOS X 2 + turbo pro-mod. Arnie franks on his NOS FJ 1100 ( big tire bike) lots of others and the street bikes are starting to come out as well.
..... Also - you have a unique tag line about off track performance - what does that mean -
It means as racers we take this stuff very serious, ( even though we are having fun) but it CAN NOT take precedence over our families and those close to us. The REALLY important things in life should be taken care of before racing enters the picture. We are obligated to help the needy in our community's, and lead our children by example. I could get on a rant here , but you see what i'm getting at.
how does it relate to your race program and personal/preofessional life?
We try to stay close to God, even when it seems we trip down the path more than not. We're close to our families and you will very rarely see me without my daughter Morgan ( 14) by my side. It's been that way since day one. We are very open about the things facing teens of her generation. We get one shot at instilling the important lessons of life into our kids. We cannot afford to take it lightly. Time with children is worth more than all the $$ in the world.
as far as race programs, we have found our racing program to be a very useful tool in the community. we set up the whole race thing to attract attention to many charities through out the year. While at the track, we strive to keep a pit area where kids are welcome to come in and get a picture and we always make it a BIG deal to make a fuss over them. We've had disabled kids up on the bikes for pix and they absolutely LOVE it!
We do not party in the pits. Not only is it unsafe for rider and crew a like, it , and bad language, do not make for a family friendly Pit area. Don't get me wrong , after the races at the hotel out on the parking lot, I'll buy the first round of beers and exchange the best of the dirty jokes around the boys. but not with the girls and kids around. I know " that's sexist!" it's just the way I was raised. Also we use Mam, and Sir.
When you do your announcement we could post it on VRODRacing.com - I have news sections just waiting...
You got it.
... and what is the highest speed that you have ever gone in the quarter mile (any bike)? My self? I really can't remember, but it couldnt have been over 120 or so, at Topeka, on our outlaw bike with the NOS totally off. Scared the crap out of me . just too wild a ride on that bike. I have a 90 1100 Katana that we tweeked all winter to run in the grudge matches this season ( b4 the Vrod, and after the explosion) I street raced it a little and laid it down right after the spring got nice enough to ride. I'm reworking it now. But I really don't have the need to go the big MPH. Mike and I are brothers and best friends . he is the better rider, I can get more attention to our program ....thats just the way we do it.
Mike has taken the outlaw gs1150e to 8.53 @ 171 in the 1/4 .Last season. That was with an 8 inch slick, and no bar- Small block ( 1238 cc) We now have a promod 1428 to install into it . progressive everything. But will not assemble until the HD thing goes away, or becomes stale.
HEY Sometimes I write this stuff like it comes out of my head, and it may sound wierd. PLEEZ use what you need and edit as you see fit!!! Thanks! Rob
kspz3 08-17-2004, 10:23 PM UPSMan - how was your weekend at the track and how are the points.... I will do a report for mine on another thread.

We were off last weekend, well we were not racing that is. The shop we ride for had a 5 year anniversary of being in the new facility party/reunion, so we did the sponsor thing. As you walk in the front door to the dealership there is a 11ft wide by 6 1/2 tall picture of us (as of Friday). ( see attached) The project V bike will rest there while we are in town. When we are gone there will be a cool sign with other pix on it , that reads Gone Racing.
Anyway, there were 2 bands playing outside with a bunch of vendors and BBQ, LOTS of bikes and people in and out all day (thank Goodness Sturgis was on....they couldnt handle much more comfortably) they had some neat handouts of project v made to give those that wanted one. I made up a longer video, with more race stuff on it, to play on a big screen where we were . And we just hung out and answered questions, showed the bike, and looked purty...he he he well maybe Morgan did , Mike and I just hung out.
Our next race is this weekend at Whichita Int'l Raceway in Wichita Ks. Truett & Osborne all bike drags. Will leave here Fri. Night and race all day Sat. If we make it to the late rounds, we will stay over til Sunday. It will be different, as Mike has never launched the V-rod on a Pro-tree. We will see. It will be fun anyway! (will keep my mind off the big "40" b-day.) Lots of Harley's always there. We are prepared to talk about "the pipe" he he he he
If anyone is around the Wichita area this weekend Look us up ! We will get to the track late Friday night , hang out for a while, drop trailers, then go to room and be back EARLY Sat. Morning.
Some people are going to Ind'y for the pro-star deal. but the die hards are heading to Truett. Hope to have some cool footage when we return. Wish us luck.
kspz3 08-17-2004, 11:02 PM You guys seem to be doing a great job of promoting. Tell us a little bit about your sponsorship relationship - how does it work - what kind of time do you invest in this - does it seem to be creating alot of interest at the dealership - how about sales - any impact there - how much time do you spend at the dealership or related functions - for those that are trying to get a sponsorship - do you have any guidance or advise on how to approach it and how to manage the relationship.
