: Great Texas Outback

Ok enough of all those Colorado and NH twisty roads, I know everyone thinks that Texas doesn't have all the great scenery and wonderful landscape. These roads are just like the ones in the other movies except maybe a little straighter and a little flatter but they have personality. It becomes a challenge dodging soccer moms in SUV's. :)

Who knows now that I can mount the DV camera on the bike I might even make a real movie. LOL

Nice Max. I counted something like 11 blind driveways in the first couple hundred feet. Must make for some interesting situations on occasion.

Matt I just used a net mesh and strapped the camera right to the top of the headlight, crude but effective. I used a canon optura10 DV camera to do the capture, cheap but works well.

Nice job Max did you have any kind of insulation under the camera because it seems pretty clear. Minimal vibration noticed in the video.

David even though the camera is a cheap one it has 500 lines of resolution and an image stablizer. It was sitting ontop of a towel strapped to the headlight with a net.

LOL z16monte, Jack of all trades master of a couple. :)

NO cowboy's, gun fights, oil wells, JR Ewing, armadillos or illegal amigos running across the street, Ricky G harassing young Oriental women, and not one barbecue ? Looks like you live in a northern suburb

Cool vid Max :plause: , like the way that Red Ford put on the turn signal after they cut in front of you :whack:

So this is getting me in the mood to by a video camera. Whats the best or smallest for doing this type of shooting on the bike? What do we look for with a image stablizer and what else?

That's funny Dave, I just said the same thing... LOL

Did some searching and I believe that the best small digital video camera available (that records on Mini DV tape) is the Canon Optura 40 (http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=90136345&loc=111&sp=1) or the 30 (http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=90136340&loc=111&sp=1) (both easily under $800). Other then the $62 price difference, I can't see any difference using paper specs.

Canon does have a very new, substantially smaller model called the "Optura Xi", but I can not find reputable large name supplier who has them available. And the price is still MSRP at $1400. My guess is that you need to wait till these get into the distribution network before the price finds a realistic selling level.

The reason that this unit outperforms the competition is that they use a 2.2 Mega pixel CCD array. This provides a large amount of CCD area for doing that auto stabilization feature. And it also delivers the best still photos when you want some higher quality pictures, because it uses the full array for that.

ANOTHER WAY TO GO:

Sony has just intro'd their new direct to DVD-RW cameras. This is a very promising technology. Its in the $800 price range, but the CCD array is still in the 1.1 mega pixel range.

Hopefully people with experience will chime in here, because I am about to decide on which of these to order. Thanks In Advance.

Thanks for the tips. looked at some this weekend and found
Sony MICROMV™ Handycam® Camcorder
DCR-IP1 1/5.0" 1 Megapixel gross Advanced HAD™ CCD imager
SONY (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_BrowseCatalog-Start;sid=fHlvcw7MSftv-04nzOVleEHcBkItTs5aw7g=?CategoryName=dcc_DICamcorders_MicroMVHandycamCamcorders&Dept=dcc_DICamcorders)
looked neat and really small, supposedly fits in your pocket. But don't want to give up picture quality of 1 mega pixel for a couple inch's. I don't know if 1 mega pixal will make that much difference?
I'm going to look at the Canon now as I like the price difference and more pixel thing .

Thanks again 0rest, Dave

The Canon that I use Dave is a 1.3 megapixel optura 10. It has a very good image stabalizer and if you can still find any of them I know that I picked mine up for 399.00 about 6 months ago. It's not the smallest but it really doesn't have to be for what I do with it.

Orest is correct, I think some of the best you could get to do this with is the optura 30-40 right now. Excellent cameras with some really nice quality.
