I didn't see this guy until he passed me. It was too close for comfort.
I was tempted to chase him down but that would have made me an asshole too.
It could be a fool late for work or just a plain idiot.

Look for the headlights in the rear and check your own side view mirrors often.

You could have just checked your mirrors and still missed him. I think I'd rather not see that guy coming. You might have moved over into his intended path. People like that are expecting you to remain where you are and maintain your current speed. They'll miss you if you don't move. Whew. Good decision not to pursue. Just do like your forum name, and be cool.

It's possible that was his thought process but my experience says it probably wasn't. They simply saw a spot and aimed.

I have a hard enough time trusting people I race against to not move into my line and these are people with years of track time. If you apply that logic against the "average Joe" on the street then you lose!

Doing it against a motorcycle makes it doubly bad.

(Of course I'm not saying I haven't done this maneuver myself, especially in the Porsche, but never with a bike in the way and I'm always mumbling to myself, STAY, STAY, STAY :mrgr: )

Hey, thats Hawaii driving on the norm. The cagers here get up so close to you on the pass when they are in a hurry, you can reach back and touch them.

I love it when the cagers try a pass on a 2 lane hiway when I am already doin 65 to 70 MPH. Around my left they come, and its downshift and hit the throttle. It warms my heart to no end when the cager realize they aint gettin around and hagin their butt in the wind to what is headed their way.

These fools will pass you in left hand only turn lanes, on the right at 35 and a host of other tactics that scare the brown slick onto your shorts.

Come Hawaii for truely competitve street ridin, your life against the cagers.

I used to drive like that too. I'm the best driver I know, I can do stuff in a car you only see in movies. Most guys that drive like that are good drivers. That isn't to say he doesn't deserve to get the crap beat out of him. Were you more scared and startled than pissed off. I know I've been cruising along just thinking about how much money my new wheels are going to be and how much my big bore is, and boom there is a car I never saw. Scares the crap out of me, but not his fault. Seems to me that was what happened here, he caught you sleeping and wizzed by you and it startled you. The camera doesn't show just how close he was, didn't look that hairy to me. I've done much worse than that.

VrodRick74,

I use to drive like that too. Mainly between the ages of 16 and maybe 22.
In and out of traffic missing the car in front by inches. Passing on a double solids. Seeing how fast my car could go. Race every chance I got. The fact is, I loved the rush that came with it and I felt like I was a damn good driver completely in control.

It's a blast to drive like that. It still is!!! I just don't have others in my theatre when I'm enjoying that rush nowadays.

What I've come to realize is that the highways aren't a movie set where everything is controlled. I've also realized I put others at risk and I guess I've used empathy of how I would feel if I hurt, mamed or killed someone because of my own stupidy or overblown confidence. We see that shit happen everyday and the driver who caused it was an inncident free "Good Driver" too. Up until the point where he didn't see the bike or child crossing the street or the stop sign or red light.

When I drove on the edge where other's could have been easily harmed, I was the idiot. I just didn't realize it.

Was I scared when that idiot passed me? Startled? No. I didn't see him coming. If I had I would have moved out of his way. Did I think about how much the bike cost? No. I'd never want to drive it if I did lol. He just flew past me in an instant. The bike kept it's line. I simply thought what a ass as like I said, he was about 18 inches which is too close.

When I saw the tape later I saw him weaving in and out of traffic from "way back." Doesn't make him a pro. Any teenager can do it.
It was the weaving in and out of traffic with the disreguard for others and I thought it would be good to post that for others to see. When I see that kind of driving on the highway I don't think "damn, that guy can drive!!!" I think what an ass.

There's someone I know I won't drive with because that's the only way he knows how to drive. Like a frickin idiot. Constant speed, and weaving. And if someone's in his way, that person is the idiot in his eyes.

The fact is, if I mounted the camera backwards everyday it would probably show lots of stupidity we don't see.

The main point of the thread is just a reminder. Check your sideview mirrors often. That's all. Not to go hunt someone down and kick his ass. We all do stupid shit at times and unfortunately that will never change.

Three lane road, what's max speed? Slows go on right lane, right? Guys coming too fast from the middle onto the left lane passing slower cages. You're on left lane in 4th at like 3-4000rpm then shift 5th to what sounds like 3000rpm; those are slow speeds given the V-Rod's gearing, you didn't see him so could not get out of the way. I see a lot of people, me for example, using the left lane often because it's less bumpy (heavy trucks not alloweed) but that is no excuse when we're going slow on the fast lane. "I didn't see this guy until he passed me." That's when I feel you're right; I believe cages should consider the consequences of motorcycle crashes. He is an idiot because he did not care to be farther from you than from the Sequoia and the gap between you and the car behind was huge; he just wanted it that way. Just someone having fun with a small social conscience. On the highway cages seem to march in groups because the slow driving Miss Daisy types with antisocial behavior don’t care if there are three cars side by side doing 50mph, ridiculous. That means you will have huge gaps in between groups of cars. You can buku long time between spots without any cages nearby. If you catch the other cars just pass them all again, easy on a bike, and find the other sweet spot. Dude I think you never take your eyes off the road, ahead AND behind you are equally important when cruising legal, I agree, that should be the point. On more than “one lane your way” roads I believe you are not to enjoy the scenery much. The training thing so well spoken of here is :bs: . Never keep the legal speed around cages, get away by whatever means; never keep cages around at all, never have a cage in front and another one in back, never trust cages, never ride alongside a cage, never follow a cage if no harm done, never but Jesus never get in their way, your cage is the only one safer just because you're off the bike, cages are cool, motorcycles are cooler, he was not going too fast, all others were going too slow. Whew! Last but not least CAGES ARE OUT TO GET YOU AND MISS DAYSI HATES ALL OF US :) .

I will not get late to work; they will all be there too early. That’s what I’ll tell them anyway  .

Eh!!! Never = try not to.

P.S. If you had the little helmet and break your coconut then it’s your fault. If the “you’ll die anyway” comments were true I’d have more lives than a cat. Wear a full face and body armor. This from someone who hates helmets and heavy clothing. The proud papi of three beautiful children. Be alive, don’t die. Don’t kill either. Keep the cool videos coming!

eduarprmd,

Good post with good insight and suggestions and pretty accurate on the bike speed.
There's a couple things the tape doesn't show.

1. I could only go as fast as the car in front of me. (which I gave plenty of room to)
2. I didn't pass the car in front as my left turn was quickly approaching. Just rode the mile to the light out at a leisurely pass. All three lanes were traveling pretty close to the same speed anyway. About 55-60 mph.

You hit the nail on the head at what really bothered me. That the guy had PLENTY of room to pass me on the right but he purposely did the close pass.

You're exactly right!!! That's the reason that guy is an idiot. Thanks for pinpointing that.

If he would have passed leaving me plenty of room, there wouldn't be a movie to post as that would have not been an issue. It simply would have been driver cautiously heading somewhere in a hurry but instead he was a little reckless and provoking. Not majorly reckless but somewhat reckless.

Great job guys, I don't drive that way anymore, just like you I did it when I was younger. I ride ultra agressive around these stupid cagers. I've been known to fly by a would be danger zone at over a 100mph. I'll split lanes at hight speed to get away from these idiots. I'm sorry if my post seemed insensative, I am on your side, and he was in the wrong. I just want to know what you were doing in the fast lane putting around. Why weren't you on the gas more? Just a thought, I ususally cruise at 80.

Rick,

I was turning left in just a few seconds and keeping pace with several cars in front of me. It wasn't a situation where I was in the fast lane going too slow. All three lanes were traveling about the same speed. I could have zipped around the few cars in front of me but why? A few seconds later I would have been stopped at a red light waiting to turn left as everyone I would have just passed passed me again. The fact is Rick, when I have open road ahead of me, I've rarely held anyone behind me up. If I was, I'd move my ass over and let them pass.
I guess I'll admit I do ride it sometimes "like I stole it" but not to what I call an extreme "with others nearby." Of course, when someone sees me riding the V-Rod as I open the throttle maybe they think I'm the idiot even though they are safe.

I'm with you on staying away from the cagers and around here you would be a fool to drive the speed limit on the highway when everyone around you is doing 70 or 80. It's best to stay with, ahead and away from the traffic.
Sometimes during rush hour that's hard to do. In heavy traffic, that's when you really put your trust in others. That's when you can more easily get hit too.

This was one of those situations where it seemed everyone was asleep cruising 55-60 except the guy who came up from behind. If I would have seen him coming I would have at the very least moved over to the far left to make sure he had plenty of room to avoid me even though he DID have plenty of room to avoid me but chose not to.

This is really turning into a hell of a discussion. Just another instance of many where I've learned from my fellow V-Rodders.
