: Custom Extended Luggage Rack FS
gbflex 07-30-2007, 07:42 PM Anyone interested in a custom luggage rack that bolts on to the stock base plate? I have a T-Bag and when using the stock luggage rack it hangs over the end. So I made up one that is 13.5 inches and works well. We can power coat black or silver. 100.00 shipped. PM me if your interested.
Scrmng E 07-30-2007, 08:07 PM Do you have a pic installed on a bike? How much for chromed?
gbflex 07-30-2007, 08:16 PM I can snap a few pictures mounted on the bike. The rack in the picture above I painted with a spray can. I have a powder coater but due to lack of time before I leave for Sturgis had to just get it coated. You would need to find a chrome shop and send it to them. I would guess a chrome shop would charge around 75.00.
Beeek 07-30-2007, 10:05 PM Great idea! This would work well for a number of bigger bags. Is it steel ie. stronger than the 10lb limit on the baby HD one?
LiquidSilver 07-30-2007, 10:47 PM I'd be more interested in a wider one than a longer one. Longer just seems to add leverage to the weight, stressing the supports.

Yes it is steel. 10lb limit? I have had my T-Bag loaded and it weighed 30lbs++ and never had a problem.

I totally agree in a wider rack for leverage. You still need the length to be 13" to support the bag so it does not cover up the tail light. The little Harley one is WAY to short.

As long as the width doesn't interfere with opening the hard saddlebags.

Good to know...there was a warning sticker on mine when I got it...but we all know they're always conservative.

Excellent work, my man.
This is what the forum is all about!

I want one if it holds the tourpak that Daniii has on his bike.
Beeek 07-31-2007, 06:07 PM I also want one..but I don't think it'll allow me to install a Tourpak and be able to open my hard saddlebags.
If there was some way for you to design something that would lift up two or three inches to allow the saddlebag lids to swing open just enough to squeeze into. I'm not sure if 2 or 3 inch long standoffs would look bad.

You guys just let me know what you want. More important if you have a stock rack now let me know how much wider will work with your hard bags. I have leather ones so it's not an issue.
brent_walkoviak 08-01-2007, 02:49 PM gbflex,
Sign me up, for the same size you have in photo, 13.5 long in Silver.
gbflex 08-01-2007, 04:49 PM Ok guys, thanks for the interest. It look's like we have enough interest to bang a few out. I am leaving for Sturgis and hope to have a proto-type by the middle of August.
Next version will be 1.5 wider on each side. Unit will bolt to the stock base plate and will be 11.5 W X 13.5 L. I am also going to power coat them and offer Black and Sliver. Please PM me if you are interested in purchasing one. Thanks. See you when I get back!:thumb:

Great idea.
Are they going to be available in chrome? If so I will take one.
Thanks
Frank
gbflex 08-01-2007, 05:19 PM Frank, When I get back I will get some quotes to have them chromed. I know a few good chrome shops.

Thank You
I'd be interested in one, too, in chrome. Daniii, will this hold the tourpak?
Daniii 08-02-2007, 08:08 PM I think it will still require a support further back if you move the tourpak back like I did, and then carry 28 lbs of gas (plus all my other crap). With no passenger, however, it may work just fine. I really feel secure, however, with the additional rear support to the HD FPOS brackets. If you go to full sized HD bags, those lids come open without needing the clearance for the tourpak, but may not have the bar I use for my rear support brace.
In the end, let someone follow you and see how much it "bounces". I fear the rack is only supported in the front 3", and all that weight cantilevered out back will fatigue something.
The stock rack was pot metal, and failed in 4 places with my load. If steel, those stresses will be transferred somewhere else (like to the rack base plate mount). A rear support eliminates that stress. I want it to eliminate the rube goldberg aluminum angle I used to stiffen the bottom of the tourpak, which was flexing a bit over time.
Lots of work then.
This extended luggage rack would be ALOT better for holding a bikersfriend barrel than the standard HD one.
LiquidSilver 08-03-2007, 11:10 AM I think a pair of bars connecting the corners of this luggage rack to the corners of the FPOS rack would provide the necessary support and minimize the cantelevered forces.

PM sent. I would love to have a black one. And, if you're in the mood, I would like to have a little taller sissy bar - sort of like the one Kuryakyn had for the V-Rod, but discontinued.
Thanks
wiley81db 08-04-2007, 11:52 AM Any chance you can make a rack that bolts to the side holes on the base plate. I really like my mini sissy bar and dont want to take it off.
firemedic 08-04-2007, 10:51 PM Lots of work then.

Even more so with the Kuryakyn tall sissybar, which takes up a lot of the rack space.
Cytoviper 08-16-2007, 06:09 PM Hey great looking rack......
I would be up for a chrome one........ let me know $$ when you get back.
Frank Storms 08-16-2007, 06:47 PM Have you been able to get a price on a chromed rack?
Frank
I'd even be happy with a black one, if it's going to be available sooner than chrome. In fact, next week would be good. :)
Frank Storms 08-18-2007, 04:49 PM GBFLEX
With your new longer and wider rack will we be able to use the extended Kuryakyn tall sissy bar. IMHO that would be the ideal setup. The sissy bar would have to fit inside the outer bars of the wider rack. It looks like even if it would fit between the outer bars there may be a problem with the uprights on the Kuryakyn sissy bar hitting the rear cross member on the rack. I look forward to the chrome version.
Thanks

Frank,
Looking at the side by side comparison photo's I don't think you'll have a problem using either sissy bar with this rack. (GBFLEX was just here for a visit, but he didn't have one with him.)
The sissy bar looks like it stradles the outside of the stock rack, and if you look at the first post, the longer rack doesn't look significantly wider than the stock one, just longer back.
Greg,
If you need a sissy bar to try this with, just give me a call. I have one you can use for mock up.

RJ,
From what I understand (post #15 of this thread) the new version of the rack will be 11 1/2" wide, 3" wider than the one in the first post. Thus the reason for my question. I personally like the idea of the wider and longer rack. I just hope Greg builds it to fit the Kuryakyn set back and taller sissy bar.

Sorry Frank, Missed that one. GBFLEX and I spent the afternoon dinking around with his bike and chewing the fat. The rack came up in conversation, but he didn't have one on his bike for me to look at.
He makes some KILLER cigar tubes made from aluminum with an O ring and a circle cutter on built in. Nice touch.

Frank, right now we are focusing on the stock set up. I totally understand what you are seeking and will be looking into that design as well. My partner and I just got back from Sturgis and are trying to catch up. Please be patient.

RJ, thanks for the offer and the Cigar Tube Plug. The rack Frank wants would be a bit more complicated but do-able. Sorry I forgot to call you when I got home. I stopped by the Woodward cruise on my way home. I must say...the Rod got many Kudos! Thanks again RJ! You are one class guy!
Daniii 08-27-2007, 11:14 AM Well boys and girls, I'm on my 4th (and hopefully last) mod to my rear support. On a ride Saturday, I discovered that my attachment from the rear support to the Saddlebag bar had (yet again) failed. I have increased the gauge of the support brackets successively over the past couple years, as they failed, and my last ones failed again. Every time due to stress cracking.
Soooo. Looking through my ever growing assortment of bike parts, I came upon the handlebar mounts for the rumble road speakers (now mounted to the fairing). Those puppies will not fail. I suspect the next weak link will be the mild steel brace itself. This time, however, there are no stressed bends.
Time, and miles, will, of course, tell.
Any news on these, gbflex?
gbflex 08-31-2007, 11:23 AM Any news on these, gbflex?
Val, hope to have them soon. My partner is in the process of moving to a new building. Sorry I cant give you a date at this point.
ok, gbflex. looking forward to it.
Oriondk 09-02-2007, 12:59 PM Do you have pictures of it mounted on the bike?
LiquidSilver 09-11-2007, 06:47 PM Question to the metal workers out there.....
Is anyone interested in making a sissy bar extension that would bolt directly to the HD bar and add another 12-14" to it? I'm thinking about a 1 piece extension with 4 holes tapped in. 12-14" would give enough length to hold t-bags and other stuff for a road trip. Bolting on the existing bar would eliminate the complexity of the compound angles (read EASY). It wouldn't be spaced further back like the discontinued Kuryakyn bar and would likely be a nice match for the luggage rack.
What do ya'll think?
skipmccall 10-22-2007, 12:10 PM Whatever happened with this wider, longer luggage rack?
Frank Storms 10-22-2007, 12:12 PM I am also interested on the status.

Daniii 10-22-2007, 02:35 PM Okie made an extended sissy bar for his bike. Looks pretty good. Maybe he can make another. Or a luggage rack..
gbflex 10-23-2007, 10:00 AM Sorry guys, my buddy is still in the process of moving his business. He should be moved in by the end of the month. Hang in there, he does excellent work and will be worth the wait.

I second that. I'd be very interested in one - 12 inches or so - just high enough to fasten a luggage bag strap to for a secure tie-down. But, it doesn't look like this will be our source.
CPTJAM 01-06-2008, 03:04 AM Greg, I need one to mount a tour pak to. I can get measurements Tuesday. Black is fine, or unfinished. I gots spray paint, and since it will be hidden, no worries!

capngeo 03-15-2008, 11:09 PM I guess he's gone on walk-about???
I got tired of waiting and made a rack out of solid aluminum plate, and welded a 3" extension into my sissybar.... Worked great going and coming to Bike Week. I need to put some holes in the rack for bungee hooks though.
GF likes the extra back support, but now wants me to move her foot pegs forward a bit.... I'm thinking about welding tabs on the swingarm near the pivot for the pass pegs....
Daniii 03-16-2008, 09:08 AM I finally did away with the removable feature of my tour tank. My 'clever' quick release mount failed in three places - vibration is a killer - and I hard mounted the sucker into the tourpack. I also removed the quick disconnect fuel line widget. When the o-ring breaks, you wing up with a tour pack full of gasoline. But my rear support survived the Daytona run unscathed, as did my aluminum angleiron supports. Guess I finally have that part figured out.

gbflex 06-01-2008, 12:24 PM OK guys, hear is a prototype rack. 11"w X 16 3/4L I need to know how many guys want one. 150.00 shipped lower 48. We can "PAINT" them silver, chrome or black. If you want yours chromed...you will need to find a chrome shop and send it out yourself. You will be required to sign a waiver which states the rack is not to be used to support anything heavier than 10lbs. Just like Harley states for their rack. This covers us from any potential problems with someone trying to haul something way to heavy. Once we have 10 people that want one we will make them. Thank you for being so patient.
Please PM me with your order / Pay Pal information & Paint Color Preference. Invoice will be sent when racks are shipped.

Frank Storms 06-01-2008, 12:48 PM Nice work. What is the overall size? Will it be available shorter in length? About 3" or 4" shorter. I really like the width but the length seems to be a little long. Very interested here.
Thanks

Daniii 06-01-2008, 01:01 PM Sign me up.
bikerabbi 06-01-2008, 11:15 PM Dimensions please: how long by how wide?
Daniii 06-01-2008, 11:38 PM If its made of steel, its better than the pot metal factory one. Looks big enough to me.
gbflex 06-02-2008, 07:05 AM They measure 11"W x 16 3/4 L. And yes they are metal. As you can see in the picture it needs to be that long so the T-bag does not hang over and block the light. I used mine to get me out to Sturgis. I did not care what it looked like just needed something better than what Harley offers. Its not pretty but does the job. It came off once I got out there.
Frank Storms 06-02-2008, 10:02 AM I will take one. No paint. If it can be made 4" shorter in length, that would be great. If not I will modify it.
Thanks for you time and effort.

Daniii 06-02-2008, 11:03 AM I'm looking forward to eliminating my aluminum angle under tourpak reinforcements. But I'll still have the rear support. 35lbs is a bit much to cantilever.

gbflex 06-03-2008, 07:42 AM H20, I was hoping to get 10 people interested and then make them up. It appears we have 3 now. If you guys want the rack 3 inches shorter we can do that. However, they all must be the same. Pay Pal works for me. PM me your account. Thanks.

I don't mean to be a wise guy but 3-4 inches narrower would be better for me. 13 1/2" is just too wide looking to leave on the bike.
Daniii 06-03-2008, 01:59 PM Shees. You guys are screwing this up. 3" narrower, and 3" shorter, and its the same size as stock.
gbflex 06-03-2008, 02:28 PM Daniii, no worries, I am staying with the 11"w x 16" 3/4L I need your pay pal and color choice. Thanks.

I have a Corbin seat and Corbin back rest. This rack works perfect for my setup.
The first rack we made was not quite long enough and my T-Bag hung over just enough to block the light. Not any more!

Broondog 06-05-2008, 08:40 PM posting to keep track. no time to read entire thread. interested......
Broondog 06-06-2008, 01:45 AM Sorry, but I think I'm out. Nice custom work, but think it is to big for my purposes. Guess for some reason, I don't have as much trouble keeping my Nelson Rigg tourpak on what's left of the rack. I also use the kuryakn taller sissy bar. It doesn't leave much, but I have a reasonable system. Good luck!
jforbush 06-06-2008, 06:58 AM Hear is the list so far, thanks guys.

skipmccall 06-07-2008, 07:32 PM Anyone interested in a custom luggage rack that bolts on to the stock base plate? I have a T-Bag and when using the stock luggage rack it hangs over the end. So I made up one that is 13.5 inches and works well. We can power coat black or silver. 100.00 shipped. PM me if your interested.
What happened to this one? This is the one that I was waiting on.
Ok guys, thanks for the interest.
I could have gone for the extra 1.5" also, if it did not interfere with the HD sissy bar, but too much has changed for me. I would still take one of these powder coated black for the original $100 like you initially offered.

gbflex 06-17-2008, 10:45 AM Just to let you guys know. We will be making up the racks next week.
Daniii 06-17-2008, 04:32 PM Yee ha. Looking forward to the upgrade.
porky133 07-02-2008, 07:27 PM Any updates? And Happy 4th to you all.
bikerabbi 07-02-2008, 11:04 PM Please remove me from the list - I've made other arrangements and am cancelling my order. Thanks anyway and good luck.
LiquidSilver 07-03-2008, 07:37 PM Sorry guys... I too had to make other arrangements. This project is taking too long and I can't depend on the dates given. Good luck all.
Daniii 07-03-2008, 08:42 PM I'm still in. Keep us posted.

Orca 01 07-20-2008, 05:25 PM I know you are off to Sturgis, wished I was headed there myself. Do you know if the rack will fit with the Corbin hard bags? I believe they are called Fleetliners.
CPTJAM 07-20-2008, 10:02 PM Still standing by, Greg! My paypal trigger finger is itchy! Joe
porky133 07-31-2008, 02:47 AM We're still here for this. I'm trying to be patient, really I am. Any news?
Torinate 08-04-2008, 12:15 PM Any timeline?
Daniii 08-05-2008, 08:43 PM I'm ready. On close inspection, I see my new one is broken yet again, in the same place.
CPTJAM 08-06-2008, 12:48 PM Come on, Greg! Milwaukee and KC are fast approaching! Joe
porky133 08-29-2008, 06:20 AM Hate to do this but it is dragging out a while. Those who found another way, care to share? I still need something to put my tail bag on.

I took a the "medium" H-D V-Rod sissy bar to a welder-machinist. I told him I wanted a 4" extension in the middle of it. He found some exact diameter bar, cut it, welded it in, smoothed it and voila, $150. later, I have just the bar I want. I'll paint it black for now, but will send it to a chromer later. Make sure you take the base plate so he can properly shape the bend and curve so it will fit to the base plate perfectly. No picture now but I'll try and post something soon.
I then took some diamand plate, cut it to fit inside the base of a Kuryakyn luggage bag and wired it to the existing smaller H-D rack.
Daniii 08-29-2008, 10:40 AM Be advised, the stock HD luggage rack is made of pot metal of some sort. If you put more than the 10# listed on it for an extended time, even if you support the rear with a strudy brace down to the saddlebag supports, the damn thing will break at the rear bolt holes. Guess how I know this?

True. I only put in lite things: rain coat, glasses, rags, cleaner...
porky133 10-07-2008, 02:05 AM Well, over here it's hard to find a machinist or welder. I keep asking the car guys and bike guys but so far nada. GBFLEX, where are you?

That's cuz you're gaijin. If you were Japanese you'de be fixed up by now. That's how Japan is dude.
porky133 10-08-2008, 10:00 AM I know. I've been here for about 15 years, off and on. Still can't speak teh language and that's my handicap. That's why I wanted this so bad from another forum member.

I'm just an Old Geezer that has been following this thread and got to the point I can't keep my mouth shut.
First of all l want to say that is one hell of a nice design for that rack, it looks good and in steel I'm sure it will function nicely.
My reason for this note is that I designed a rack and then had to have a machine shop make it up for me because I had trouble with the shorter length of my stock rack after putting the infamous Kuryakyn Sissy Bar on to get some more room behind me for the Old lady, (I'm just too old to enjoy those 38 Ds punching my back any more.)
I used the rack on a trip out to Colorado this summer then took it off cause it doesn't look that good without chrome and I havent gotten a chance to find a chromer yet.
It is 10.5" wide at the widest point and 12" long. The tab that slides between the upright bars of the Kuryakyn is 6 5/8" wide and 3 3/8" deep. I use a Kuryakyn Full Dresser Bag and it works great with that length.
I made it so it sits over the original rack and bolts to the original holes, all I needed were some longer metric bolts for it.
I thought I was the only one bothered by the size of the rack but thats what this forum is all about I guess. Just thought I would put my two cents in with some dimensions that may help someone else. I think I might remake this one out of 3/16" steel so it will chrome up nicer than aluminum does. Also I think if the rear part of it had a large radius to match the original closer it would make a better looking rack to stay on the bike. The V-rod has a lot of nice rounded edges to the overall look and it should be followed, IMHO
Now lets see if I can get the pictures on. Excuse the dirt and crud, its winter in Michigan and the bike is ready to up on the rack for the annual winter time improvements.:2cents:

nice design...
Philthy 10-29-2008, 11:47 PM Here is what I would pay for. Do you recall the cast luggage rack? It was discontinued for 2007. It was streamlined and bolted up where a base plate mounts. It looked so much nicer than a base plate and bolt on luggage rack. HD never made one of these for the Street Rod. If you could make something that looks like the cast luggage rack and bolts directly to the frame where a base plate would go that fit a Street Rod I'd buy it in a New York heart beat.
Daniii 10-30-2008, 05:16 PM Having waited (apparently in vain) for the promised rack, I'm finally considering going the CycleVision route and getting the side plate and stuff (about $700 when I priced all the pieces) so I can truly support the tourpack. My second stock rack is broken again in the same place. Anyone heard from GBFlex?
porky133 10-30-2008, 05:42 PM How about posting up all the parts needed for what you are doing? I gotta do something, I want to take a trip to mainland Japan next summer and I need to carry my stuff!
harleymon55 01-01-2009, 07:29 PM Has anyone heard from GBFLEX ? I sent to PM's pertaining to the luggage rack and have not heard from him. I'm thinking he & his wife are on vacation over the Holidays, is he still around, etc.? I like the rack and want to get one (black).
Daniii 01-01-2009, 07:57 PM His friend, who was making them, had "issues". Its not dead, but I guess "on hold". I need one. I don't care what color.
porky133 01-01-2009, 08:03 PM I finally found a guy here that took mine and extended it for me. He stripped it down, added about three inches to it and then repowder coated it. All for $150. I haven't put it on the bike yet but it looks good and should line up with the saddlebag support out the back.
