: Packing for Sturgis
Daniii 07-20-2007, 10:18 PM Ok fellow Baggers (and Bagettes, I guess), lets see what you've got planned for the expedition to Sturgis. I figured out a new mount for my PDA, now that I have it doing Back-Up GPS and MP3 duty (always gotta have a plan B - Google maps has a new download for PDA's that connects to most bluetooth GPS senders - I don't have to preload maps like I do with the Garmin, and I have a 2 G SD card in the PDA for back-up music should the XM take a crap.), and my new XM-Radio is also remounted. I can mount my ancient 30g iPod on the same bracket in about 5 minutes. The Garmin 60C goes on the black handlebar clip on the left side.
Everything is powered off a fused Aux circuit, and the audio feeds into the AudioVox stuff in the right saddlebag. I can actually answer the phone while riding (shudder). In theory, if I load waypoints in the Google program on the PDA, it will give voice directions.
My AirHawk seat cushion arrived today. We'll see if it will relieve the leg/seat pain I seem to get about 3 hours down the road. I can relieve it by shifting weight from one ass cheek to the other (I know TMI) but it would be nice not to have to. Got a 200 mile ride with the local HOG tomorrow to test everything out.
I'll have a tank bag, a Cortech round bag on the seat behind me, and a topper bag on top of the TourPak. And I'll take the bike cover this year. Oh yea, I have a brand new rear tire, which I expect to pretty much use up.
Filled the tank(s) tonite, took 5.4 gallons total, and the V-Gauge said I had 44 miles to empty (and that I had used 5.3 gallons).
tyson876 07-20-2007, 10:33 PM you are the pack rat king. where is the kitchen sink? hell norad can probably find you.
"cuthru" 07-20-2007, 11:24 PM :laugh:Really ought to be able to see you coming down the highway:laugh: ! I'm getting my stuff ready also; let's see toothbrush, jacket, I'm wearing my clothes and helmet. See you in Sturgis! And Yes I'm :ride: riding and will be staying in Spearfish, see you there Danii:thumb:. Guess we'll have to plan on meeting at the Rod Rally in KC Tyson.

Hmmmmnnnnn....what is the chain about on the device on the clutch side?
Have a wonderful trip!

pa-v-rod 07-21-2007, 06:23 PM Jeezus. Just buy an Ultra already. That looks like way to much work. You know, having to watch bridge clearances and all. My dad always told me " get the right tool for the job".

Thats a nifty stretchable tie I found somewhere (likely RadioShit) that is insurance against inadvertent dislodgement. I have several here and there, actually (suspenders AND a belt).

If they replace the 1935 designed motor in the Ultra, we might have a discussion. Until that time, don't knock it till you've tried it.
I had several Ultra owners asking very probing questions about the bike at the HOG ride today. They have been waiting for the Revo-bagger, which doesn't seem to coming (hello MoCo, are you listening???), and are seriously thinking about a road rod (or Bat Rod).

Very interesting! Thanks Danii
Daniii 07-22-2007, 12:44 PM Had a 200 mile ride yesterday with the HOG. The AirHawk gets mixed reviews. It got a bit hot (but then it WAS hot out). I'll try with the sheepskin ('annabelle') next time, and a bit less air. The slight increase in height allows me to lock my knees with my feet on the hiway pegs, taking away all muscle effort. So that was good.
Good news is I didn't get the sore leg I've gotten in the past from circulation cut-off. Bad news is it was borderline monkeybutt (TMI?).
The GPS / PDA phone works, but is unreadable in sunlight. So that is a washout (except at night, I guess). But I can still answer the phone (just can't see who is calling).
The adventure continues.
sburke91 07-22-2007, 11:13 PM I'm curious to see how the PDA mount holds up. I tried one of those side clamp mounts and over time the vibration caused the PDA to walk out of it. I ended up going to a tank bag with a map pocket and putting the PDA in there.

I ended up going to a tank bag with a map pocket and putting the PDA in there. I put velcro (loops) on the back of the PDA, with the hooks on the mount. I also use a rubberish cable tie to clamp everything to the mount. Wish the damn thing was brighter. Have to pull under a bridge to see it!
Daniii 08-11-2007, 11:24 AM I got back from Colorado Springs last night at Midnight, having left there at Noon. I rode all night to avoid the heat! All went perfectly (bagger wise). The AirHawk seat worked out better than I could have hoped (never got the dreaded sore butt). I again had issues with the aux tank hose vapor locking, but when its hot, one wants to stop anyway.
I had a camelback which I wore on most legs to stay hydrated. I used three cargo nets (one for the spare half helmet, which I never wore, one for the coat/vest/raingear which I wasnt wearing at that particular time, and one for the bike cover on top of the left saddlebag).
My Audio system is still buggy, but I had work arounds with me, and listened to XM radio (bluesville and XM Comedy) most of the runs, but switched to the iPod (mounted in the tank bag for additional vibration isolation) for the trip last night - only got through 265 of the 2600 songs loaded on it). 4500 miles in 10 days.
COVROD 08-11-2007, 12:20 PM Danii, mapquest says that run from CO.Spgs to Plano should have only taken 11 hrs. and 54 mins. Why did it take you so much longer to get there? LOL
I had ipod problems too, not charged up all the way on my trip up even though it said it was so I got to listen to 6 songs on the way up. On my trip back, I went from Cheyenne to Denver and put 3.2 gal. in my 3.3 gal tank.

When I left Co. Spgs, the Garmin said I'd arrive at 12:14AM Actually arrived at 12:42. I did stop to eat once.....
I gotta say, the Aux Tank was a good thing. It is 144 miles from Spearfish to Lusk. Only one gas stop on that route. As long as its under 80F, the aux tank feeds just fine. Above that, vapor lock! But if I stop for 5 min, with the main tank cap off, it magically fills back up.
DrHeathenScum 08-11-2007, 01:18 PM I'm surprised you didn't figure out a way to mount that sporty in the 2nd pic... you know, a Plan-B. :D
