: Race Report - GLD 06-16-04
KBOlsen 06-17-2004, 11:29 AM Last night was the second event in Great Lakes Dragaway's "Harley Shootout" bracket racing series.
Ya'all been buggin' me to drag the 'Rod.
So I did.
There was no rain.
There were 19 bikes in our class.
John's Sportster went out the first round because of a mechanical.
I made it 4 rounds to the semi-finals and came home with a check for $106.00.
Between 7:30 and 9:30 I made a total of 12 passes. Um... I think I got my money's worth!
I think I'll go back next Wednesday.

You Go Girl! :plause: Guess Your Hooked Now Huh!Whens Then Last Time you got a check at the RR's? :slap: Looks like your a Natural! What kind of Times did you run? :sinister: ;) :kaz:
VRODVIC 06-17-2004, 12:05 PM :plause: Congrats! Post your times, I been thinking about running mine at local track at the next rally there! :notworth:
KBOlsen 06-17-2004, 12:20 PM Best reaction time: .089 (the first pass)
Best 60': 1.957 (on the third pass. I'm so lame!)
Best ET: 12:29 (my dial-in was 12:30, so glad this didn't happen in a race!)
Best MPH: 112.07 (the second pass)
I've started a spreadsheet to track all this stuff. Here are the average #'s, both inclusive and exclusive of the race rounds (it's bracket racing, and I had to 'pace myself' against the competitors - not running "all-out" passes... which kind of skews the numbers).
Average for the event (practice times only):
R/T: .0313
60': 2.115
330': 5.393
1/8: 8.087
MPH: 91.106
1000': 10.437
1/4: 12.455
MPH: 111.139
Overall average performance:
R/T: 0.313
60': 2.105
330': 5.385
1/8: 8.083
MPH: 90.552
1000': 10.481
1/4: 12.550
MPH: 108.292
Numbers across the board...
12:316/111.410
12:403/112.070
12:677/100.750 (race)
13:268/91.470 (race)
12:358/106.570 (race)
12:656/111.600 (race)
12:229/111.910
12:607/111.110
12:525/110.700
12:497/111.110
12:714/109.560

I dunno anything about being a 'natural' (beginner's luck?) but I feel a lot better about setting Twilight up as a legal entity now that it has some income!
I try very hard not to think about how much my "wood" from roadracing cost :banghead:
Draggin' is a blast but, as I mentioned to the one other kneedragger in attendance (he was riding a tube-frame Buell that pulls mid-10's), it's over too darn quickly! Plus, they kind of frown on putting a knee down heading onto the return road.
kspz3 06-17-2004, 01:25 PM Can you say 28 tooth - you will drop .2 to .3 seconds and your 60s will go into the 1.8x range and your consistency will improve dramatically - as a result of less bog - www.pingel.com for shift light - get vtwin shift minder...... and you will dominate - best ET bike made once setup....KSP
KBOlsen 06-17-2004, 02:21 PM That was the subject of our "pillow talk" last night... The pulley is an option but I figure if we're gonna spend $ on "go-fast", we might as well go for the chain conversion. The BOG was KILLING me - I started the night launching at around 4500... was up just north of six grand by the end of the evening and it was STILL awful - clutch would engage and BWUUUUHHHHHHHHHHHHGGGHHHHHHH...
Time to do some 'homework' and see how we can do this 'on the cheep'.
kspz3 06-17-2004, 03:34 PM I can show you the stats - it is the gearing and not you - I tried every launch option that I could think of - buy the 28 tooth and if you vchange your mind later then sell it when you get your chain - talk to Sam about 26 tooth - I am in line for one as is RickN. That will gear it real low - 28 is not bad but not perfect. 26 should do it - top speed about 125 as I recall.
KSP
kspz3 06-17-2004, 08:54 PM BTW - the best that I was able to figure with the 30 tooth was to launch from 3,000 and just role on - higher revs just seemed to torment the bike- 28 tooth is still a gentle bog - when I am running well - i.e. good air and get into the 1.7s it doesn't bog much - you may be at that point out of the box - as I am running 850 bike and rider.... less weight reduces the launch load...KSP
kspz3 06-17-2004, 09:02 PM What was the order of your runs - night time humidity can also slow you down - the computer says the air is getting better but the bike stays constant or slows..... once you get the bugs worked out you can usually hold times within .1 seconds (with proper gearing) all day long . Last week I ran 11.89, 11.91, 11.89(race rolled off 11.86 dial) 11.84(race 11.84 dial) then 11.78 (race 11.84 dial-BREAKOUT that hurt! against opponent dialed @ 11.85 - rolled off to late and launched to hard 1.75 - 60 best ever). Runs variations were almost spot on the difference in 60 ' times multiplied by 1.5.
kspz3 06-17-2004, 09:10 PM KB - for lauch setup I usually set up.stage so that I have pulled the clutch in just past were it is dragging (trying to push bike forward) and the launch as soon as I see the last yellow - staring hard at that light only - I actually have a set screw in my handle bar that only allows me to pull the clucth in about 3/4 of an inch - very consistent lights - I am set to run .03 to .05. 5 lights in a row in that range last week. I will try to pull it to .02 to .04 ( practice tree). I think that my worst light all year was an .1 - with three red lights in practice as I was working setup (aggressive to push tree and one in first round three weeks ago -.006, I was pushing tree with set up .007 and .017 lights in practice. Shift light setup at 8250 if stock rev limiter allow head room. You must warm up bike or it will drop the rev limiter - first 40 seconds after starting it is in warm up mode - rev limiter will cut in at 8,000 RPM - I typically warm to 150 as measure by infra red thermometer device at base of front cylinder (center of the dark grey). That everything I know...KSP

I GOT A COUPLE FORSALE WITH S SNAZZY 240 REAR WHEEL! :D
KBOlsen 06-18-2004, 09:45 AM Kaz... "you've got mail" (well, you've got PM!)
KSP - it actually became less humid as it got later... storms went through just north of the track. By 9:00, it was still warm/humid but less so than at 7:30. The runs above were posted in chronological order.
I'm launchin' at the last yellow also... Bike is thoroughly warmed up (geez, now we need to dig out more hardware to measure temp)... tires at "street" settings.... Weight is prolly around the same... bike is 650, right? Rider + gear = "Not a little girl" LOL!
I'm gonna try out some different ideas next time we go... rolling at different RPMs... "feathering"... see what happens next week before we start coughing out buck$.
kspz3 06-18-2004, 11:33 AM No - your bike should be around 600 with partial tank of gas unless you have a bad chrome/accessory habit. You have the speed - you will do fine - of course that feathering concept is interesting - I can't feel anything through that hydralic clutch - maybe your hands are more sensitve than mine.... that's why it is pretty much dumping the thing in my case -KSP

Me too! :thumb:
KBOlsen 06-18-2004, 12:03 PM Hydro is the one thing the TL and the 'Rod have in common - LOL!
I can't wait until next Wednesday! Maybe I can talk John into riding out to the track with me before then (test/tune on Monday or Tuesday night) so we can start EXPERIMENTING!
kspz3 06-18-2004, 12:43 PM Can you say 28 tooth...... KSP
kspz3 06-18-2004, 12:44 PM Riding to and from the track is the best - like legal street racing.
KBOlsen 06-18-2004, 02:16 PM I think John's on the lookout for one 'on the cheep.'
Noooooo street racing... we get into enough trouble on our own!
kspz3 06-19-2004, 09:27 AM Racing at the track that is..... that is the legal part - I agree NO RACING ON STREET!
