: Touring Windshield vs Ultimate Touring Windshield
boilernole 06-25-2007, 11:59 AM I've spent a couple of hours searching through all of the windshield topics on here. I'm looking to buy a windshield for my VRSCAW. Since I won't be using it all of the time, I'd like something that's completely detachable (and easy to do). I thought the only option was the HD Ultimate Touring Windshield. However, I saw that they also sell a smaller HD Touring Windshield that has the same 4-clip release. Does anyone have one of these smaller ones? How well do they work compared to the Ultimate? Thanks.
TexasV-Rod 06-25-2007, 12:02 PM I think a lot has to do with how tall you are. I'm over 6' and have the touring shield. It does little to keep the wind out of my face but a lot to keep it off my chest.
sgtrage 06-25-2007, 12:07 PM I've got the quick release but I'm not sure if it's the ultimate or not. How do you tell?

I'm not sure how to tell other than the Ultimate is taller (and I believe wider). A local dealer has the smaller version and i'm going to take a look at it later today. It's such a fine line between looks and usefulness...

boilernole 06-25-2007, 12:39 PM What's the height/width difference between those two? Anyone know?
PUNISHER 06-25-2007, 01:11 PM I've got the "touring" windshield. I absolutely love it, goes on and off in about 5 seconds. Puts the wind right up over my head. I'm 5'11 and I can look right over the top. Nice Piece.

Ok, mine is the one on the right. I like it and you can ride without goggles should you choose to do so. I wish the brackets were billet instead of the straps but they don't look too bad.
vicinkev 06-25-2007, 02:34 PM I have the ultimate and i like it better than the touring the ultimate is wider on the bottom and keeps the air from running up your legs and into your body very nice on thoes late fall mornings
Daniii 06-25-2007, 08:22 PM Neither will eliminate the updraft from below. If you want to get rid of that, you have to add something like Memphis Shade lowers (or have a custom shield made that is about 6" lower....
AntDawg 06-25-2007, 09:08 PM Well I have an Ultimate Touring quick release and love the Q.R. function but not so much the look on such a sport cruiser so I orderd a tinted windvest for my B because it looked sporty and maybe could be left mounted. I mounted the windvest a week ago and I am still adjusting it trying to work out the sunglass wobble that I don't get with the Ultimate. I may be keeping my Ultimate after all.... and I am 5' 9" with a sundowner seat.
boilernole 06-26-2007, 04:10 PM Are you guys looking through or over the windshield with the ultimates and touring models? I just went in and saw one of the touring windshields at the dealer and they're 22in high off of the headlight. Anyone happen to have a picture of their bike with it on? Thanks.
AntDawg 06-26-2007, 06:28 PM I would be looking through the Ultimate touring model. I need to take a pic and post with the Ultimate installed. It is a long shield for sure. I have posted a pic of the windvest that is currently mounted. I look above the windvest.
AntDawg 06-26-2007, 06:53 PM Boilernole....scroll up to the 5th or 8th post....TexasV-rod posted the pics of the two touring shields. The one on the left is the Ultimate.
boilernole 06-26-2007, 06:59 PM Yea, I just got back from the Harley Dealer. I looked at the Touring Windshield and it's pretty large...I couldn't imagine the Ultimate. Now i'm going back and forth between the Supersport and Touring. Most of my riding is to/from school and then cruising around on short rides after class although we do some longer rides as well. Such a tough decision...i think i've read every windshield thread on here 3 times.
vicinkev 06-26-2007, 07:33 PM I had the super sport and at 6'1" it put the wind straight in my neck and face
AntDawg 06-26-2007, 09:35 PM Boiler I agree with Kev. I have heard too many negatives on the sport. Take a look at the wind vest in my gallery. It has a reverse curve at the top that throws the air upward. Depending on how tall you are and how you sit in the seat the 18" windvest may work for you. It definately helps and doesn't look bad. They run about $340.
fxrt2vrscaw 06-26-2007, 09:35 PM I have the touring windshield, but I added a Laminar Lip - check out my gallery. I am 6'-1", so the lip gave me a bit more coverage, and it kicks the air up below 70 mph.
AntDawg 06-26-2007, 09:40 PM fx, I like the shaved back rest pad....gives more room for the rider...(I need to do that)....Laminar lip doesn't look bad either.
LiquidSilver 06-26-2007, 11:09 PM I have a touring windshield but will trade to an ultimate when the opportunity arises.
Jimaroo 08-02-2007, 07:29 PM I mounted the Ultimate Windshield on mine. (I also have the Sport W/S, the Windvest W/S and a Cee Bailey's W/S). Nothing worked really well until the Ultimate. Wife was riding 1200 round trip to meet me in New Orleans and ride back to Tampa. When I first put it on for her I slid it all the way down on the forks. She hated it (reflections). I moved it almost all the way up on the forks for her and it was perfect.
300 miles of that ride was in driving rain. No problem at all. She could sit up straight and see over the top if she wanted to, also.
Who ever said on this forum that it was like riding in a phone booth was pretty accurate, I think.
It really does a good job for touring, and then you take it off right away so no one you know sees it on there 'cause it ain't pretty.
Vulture V-Rod 08-02-2007, 10:31 PM I'm 6'3 and the Ultimate works great for me. The Sport Shield put the wind directly in my face, the Ultimate makes a nice calm pocket in the air to ride in. I would guess it is about 4 foot long and almost 3 foot wide. It detaches quickly when you arrive at your destination. It ain't real pretty but it works well on the super slab at better than legal speeds.

I'm 6-3 and I have/had the ultimate touring windshield. The damn thing is so flimsy that it blows back in your face at 90+. It is big and it does keep the wind off of you. I found a guy here in Dallas that is just an outstanding plastics guy he made me a new windshield with much nicer and thicker lexan. I had him drop the bottom a couple of inches to about where the pinch bolts on the triple tree go so I get the effect of lowers without having to bolt up anything to the bike, works great. Then had him cut it down another inch . SO i have a cross between the Ultimate and the regular windshield. He charged me just 135 . Yes I know ...Pics are coming..The company is Bill's Plastics and the gentleman to speak to is ED. 214-744-1170. He's got it going on and can make damn near anything from plastic. PM me for more info or to talk. Greg
Z16monte 08-05-2007, 10:09 AM i have an ultimate that I used for my ride down to the Outer Banks.Yeah, that suckers big, a little too big. Protection was fantastic but the squared off corners got it vibrating at about 60 or so and the reflections from the instrument pod was driving me nuts. Also has a fair amount of distortion at the edges. Worked better if I lowered it so I could just see over it comfortably.

Daniii 08-05-2007, 09:30 PM I had the same guy do the same for me. He also did V-Rod Mary's. It worked pretty well (but in the end, even I agreed it looked too big). But he is real good, and reasonable.
