: Contemplating Gadget Overload
LiquidSilver 06-14-2007, 08:50 PM Question 1: How much charging current does the charging system produce at idle and at full rev?
Question 2: How much current does the bike draw in stock trim? (and is that a HD number or actually measured)
The difference should give an idea of the maximum current load that you can put on the system.
Items that might consume current:
* Phone charger 1A
* 2 way radio 400mA
* GPS 500mA
* Sound systems
* Aux LED lighting
* portable blender for mixing drinks 10A
* Aux driving lights
* micro compressor for air shocks 10A per o2man98
* weapon system for shooting cagers who aren't paying attention
* radar detector (Thanks Jim_nk)
* camera system (Thanks Jim_nk)
Items that might reduce current from baseline level:
* LED taillights and turn signals
* HID lighting
Jim_nk 06-14-2007, 09:00 PM you forgot radar detector & helmet cam/recorder
o2man98 06-14-2007, 09:37 PM * micro compressor for air shocks
FYI: The compressor in the Arnott kits that I am selling have a 10A draw.

LiquidSilver 06-14-2007, 10:45 PM For the record I don't have all this stuff on my bike.... lol
Diamond Lil 06-15-2007, 10:21 AM Now, I think this is a thread for Danii!
Daniii 06-15-2007, 02:29 PM You called?
I currently have an autocom unit and an audio signal amplifier (the xm line out isn't loud enough) in my right saddlebag (plugged into a 12V cigarette lighter-type accy plug), and the handle bars are wired for both the Garmin C60 on the left, and my cell phone/pda (5V USB plug) on the right. These are wired in the airbox to yet another 12V accy plug. Finally, I have a 12V line running to the Batwing (using a Gerbing plug as a quick disconnect), where I have a real cigarette lighter socket mounted behind the windshield, below the top tripletree (for the iPod adapter when I use that), an XM radio power cord and a 12V line for the 50 watt amp I mounted behind the windshield to power the speakers.
I have also wired the Gerbing electric clothes into a two channel thermostat into the horn cover, with the clothes connectors coming out behind the airbox under the seat. All this (except the Gerbing stuff, which is wired to the battery, and I plug the tender into this circuit) is on the fused Accy circuit, and most of it has additional in-line fuses. All lines are connected through either battery tender-type side-by-side plugs or Gerbing concentric-type plugs (you get a harness with each accessory!).
The V-Gauge tells me all is well. I read 14V when running most of this stuff, including the electric clothes. At a stop light, it drops off to 13.8, in winter. In summer (no electric clothes) the engine fans pull it down to 13.7V at a light.
Just a caution - all the power bricks draw some power even when the device is not attached. (As I found out at 4am in Denver one fine morning). Wiring these things to the aux circuit solves that problem.

rjrivero 06-18-2007, 12:28 PM Daniii,
Did you ever have a chance to check your amperage draw with all that stuff running at once?
Just curious.
RJ
Daniii 06-18-2007, 12:56 PM Amps would be tricky, as some is passing through aux and some through main. But it appears I have enough.....
rjrivero 06-18-2007, 12:58 PM I'll bring my Ammeter to the rally this year. We can tease out the different leads and inductively measure the amps for each device and get some hard numbers on this batrod of yours. It would make for an interesting exercise if nothing else. :cheers:
redrazor 06-18-2007, 02:15 PM The battery in my new Street Glide is HUGE!! This big boy would be great in any bike that needs extra "juice". Check it out!!:deal:
good luck,
redrazor

Daniii 06-20-2007, 10:23 AM Update. I hadn't been using the amp mounted to the BatWing until yesterday (I had the last one suddenly blow/stop working, listening to it in the garage, but the supplier sent me a new one overnight!). I discover that with the (50 Watt) amp turned up fairly high (to hear over the engine / wind noise) the V-Gauge voltage drops to 13.6V.

At 13.6, you're still charging! So all SHOULD be good.
My own amp charged (pun intended) story about the veritable dynamo we all ride:
On one of my many trips to and fro from Key West to Sorrysota, I stopped to let the pressure off my arse (and bladder) at a rest stop in the middle of the Everglades. There I find a couple of girls driving a VERY big diesel dually 4x4. The hood was up, with the engine being stared down by said girls. Being the chivalrous sot that I am, I pulled up and asked if they had a problem.
The cute red-headed one explained that it was her dad's truck and they were bringing it from Miami to Naples. They decided to stop and take in the view, have lunch and listen to some music. Problem is these VERY big diesel dually 4x4s seem to have a lot of stuff running if you listen to the radio in the "on" position instead of the "acc" position. Long story short; their batteries were dead.... did I say batteries ?? you betcha!
With limited resources at hand and no jumper cables my first inclination was to load up one of the girls and take her on into Naples (and to her dad). But the thought of leaving the other stranded in the middle of a BIG swamp wasn't appealing.
So not wanting to fry the VR's electrical system I pulled ONE of the diesel's batteries positive terminal off, snatched one of dad's long wires which he used to wire in his driving lights, hooked it into my battery tender pig, and revved up the 1130. 45 minutes later, the big diesel fired off!
There was one little problem that wasn't thought of though.... I now didn't have enough gas to make it to Naples!!:banghead: :banghead:
So see how creative you MacGyver types are..... how did I get to Naples?
