Well my bike started running horrible the other day, and I started checking things out and researching the site. Found out about the common flange problem and recalls, but somehow mine wasnt one of the recalls. Called local dealer, G and W Harley, IL and they wasnt much help and didnt want to do anything. So I called the dealer, Bloomington, IL, where it was originally purchased and they had same story. I told them the problem I had and all they could tell me was they would check it out, cause they didnt believe I knew what I was talking about. They said it would be $325, 2 hours labor and the flange to fix it. Well it took me about 10 minutes to take off the flange and seems to be a pretty easy fix. Not to happy about Harley service and cooperation, but feeling a lot better about not taking the bike to them and being scammed.

I'll assume your bike was out of warranty.

Now what EXACTLY! did you do? Talk to SKI. You may have an Intake Leak. Later SKI.

Yeah!! Howd' you you fix it? Cause my fuel flange problem just surfaced for the first time. One dealer told me August 15th. Another told me end of June. So I would at least like to do a temporary fix until the appointment.
Ski,
I emailed you. Hope you got it.

if it were a known problem that had a recall ( even if the bike is not on the list) would'nt they have to fix it free of charge ?

mjw930,

Yes that is right, mine is an 03 but mine was purchased early without extended warranty. Now in 04 they come with 2 yr warranty.

I replaced the little metal fitting that goes into the bottom of the fuel flange. It was half way out and my fuel was spraying in the tank instead of through the hose.

I replaced the little metal fitting for the pressure line. I just pulled the factory fitting out, and tapped some threads in the plastic, screwed in a new fitting and clamped the hose down. Everything works perfect now.

That is what I thought also, I figured Harley would at least take care of their customers that pay so much money for their bikes. I called two dealers, and all they said was it wasnt on the list and it would be 325 dollars.

Thanks for the private message ski and for the feedback everyone.
Ski,
Your words of caution are welcome. I will tread lightly. As it stands, I can't get the ring to budge. RH threads huh? We tried "loosening" the ring last weekend by trying to turn it the normal direction. Maybe we tightened it, but I don't think we got it to budge then either. I will get a buddy to come by and we'll try tapping it loose at the same time from opposite sides.

The bike is surging pretty bad between 3-4000 rpm, so I don't think I want to ride it. I can hook an FP gauge up to the schraeder valve and see what kind of fuel pressure I'm getting. My guess is that fuel pressure will be pretty low. Looks like it'll be a Camaro weekend.

That is what I did, me and a friend tapped on it with a hammer and screwdriver from opposite sides at the same time and it loosened right up. Threads are standard, lefty loosy, righty tighty

Check for an Intake leak by removing the air cleaner and runn'in the bike. Put both hands over the Stacks. The bike should die. If it wants to keep runn'in you may have a different problem. Later SKI.

I got the recall notice last year, called my local dealer for an appointment, and he said 'well is it causing you trouble?' I told him it wasn't at the time and he said 'don't worry about it.'

Two weeks ago, I was 2000 miles from home on the bike and guess what...it started causing me trouble. Had to have the flange and the throttle sensor replaced. Thank God for EXCELLENT dealers like the ones in Keene, NH. He took my bike in after hours, stripped a showroom VRod to get the part he didn't stock, fixed my bike, and sent me on my way. If you live in that area, they are truly a first-class customer service operation!

If it wasn't so far a commute, he'd be my new dealer. But needless to say, the Lakeland FL dealer is no longer my dealer!

What part of the word "RECALL" did the service manager in Lakeland not understand?

Good for you that the NH dealer understands customer service.

I suggest you go to this site and register your experiences. http://stealer-dealer.com/apage.htm

Stealer-Dealer is a great site mjw930, thanks for making me aware of it. I am a little surprised that all of the dealers in Western PA (my location) got overwhelmingly positive reviews. Maybe that's because there are quite a few dealers around here, and business is competitive.
