: Passenger comfort.
Daniii 04-14-2007, 05:00 PM In the quest to build a bike that won't tempt my SO to want me to buy an electroglide or some other nonsense, I have made every attempt to create a road sofa for Jenny. Latest attempt is to meld a Sporty Sundowner seat (it just doesn't do it for her on her Sportster 883 L - it sits 3" too far back for her) with a stock rear VRSC pillon. Tyson sent me a rear pillon to cut up (many thanks Tyson!!!:notworth: ).
I also added the last bit of farkles to the bike - the chrome windshield trim for the batwing, chrome front side covers, and the cylinder base trim.
DUDMAN 04-14-2007, 05:04 PM Looks comfy to me! If that doesn't do the trick you're in deep doo doo.
SawDawg 04-14-2007, 05:19 PM Holy cow is that a couch? Where is the big screen? LOL. Looks pretty comfy.
Rob M 04-14-2007, 06:45 PM Looks so comfy even I might be willing to ride b!tch ;)
and cover that Sportster logo :hidesbeh:
Daniii 04-14-2007, 06:48 PM Yea, the sportster logo is a bit of a problem.....
UncleFester 05-03-2007, 11:50 AM Daniii, did you get the fairing bra cut up and re-stitched to fit the Kenny Day? It looks like it fits better now than it used to.
Dan Phillips 05-03-2007, 01:00 PM First of all I really don't want to come across as insensitive regarding all you've done in your attempts and I hope you take my comments with the sense of humor with which they are intended but.......I think you need to turn that thing back into a VROD. You might could pick up a used glide or Goldwing for what you could get for all the bags, trunks & fairings, etc and have 2 bikes.
Lighthouse 05-03-2007, 01:17 PM Daniii, what type of shocks are you using? I would imagine that they are obviously very suited for 2 up riding. Thanks.
Daniii 05-04-2007, 09:02 AM I have custom Works shocks, and they could be stiffer. I finally broke the luggage rack, so I'll be stiffening it up.
The addition of the chrome trim ring to the fairing makes the HD bra look like it fits better than it did, but its still just stretched around the KenDay fairing. I did add a new headlight, which helps the look a bit.
And Dan, it has been suggested before, but I can't imagine going back to that 1930 designed motor. Took the wifes sporty out for a ride last week, and hit the rev limiter on the first straightaway. No thanks.
One day, the MoCo will put a real engine in a touring frame. Until then, I'll stick to my rube goldberg-style bike.
satyr36 05-04-2007, 11:52 AM or...tell the wife to lose some of her badunkadunk
Dan Phillips 05-04-2007, 12:03 PM I'm with ya' Daniii..........You can rip a new butt in all the glides & baggers out there. Ya' see a lot of things done to a VROD and my guess is that your mods are by far in a league of their own! At least you can go to the store and ride home with more than a pack of smokes.

i agree Daniii i have trouble getting on the Ultra to go get it inspected.
love my vrod bagger even its not evrybodys cup of tea.
the sporster seat looks good. it looks like my Mustang only probably a lot cheaper.
How wide is the seating area for your wife? My mustang is 12 inches and the only complaoint my wife has is she is a little higher and gets more air not had any complaints about comfort compared to the ultra otherwise.
ride safe Dennis
Daniii 05-04-2007, 12:47 PM I'll measure the seat when I get home, But its as wide as the Sundowner on the front! And has more support, by the looks, than the Mustang. I have $150 tied up in the seat.
Here is a pic with the new headlight. I have a mounting piece on order that is 1" taller, which will allow either moving the fairing up a little, or tucking the light in better, or both.
Discovered that with the engine guard chaps off, I get better gas mileage, closer to 38. Only about 34 with em on (but keeps the feet warm and dry).

looking good.
i have to take the chaps off when it gets above 60. it will roast my right leg.
fortunately they roll up pretty small so i can take'em off and on when the situation calls for it
:plause: Mods Mods Mods Liking that headlight....
Gundecker 05-04-2007, 08:48 PM Dang! and I didn't what to clutter the rear/tail section with that base plate JR backrest thing.
Daniii 05-07-2007, 07:39 AM Dennis, the seat is 14.5" wide. I got the new luggage rack in from Hales (20% off! :notworth: ) and made some better support with some aluminum angle. I located the tourpack another 2" further back (because I could!). One advantage is that with the tourpack back further, I can now remove it with 6 bolts (2 on the rear support where it attached to the saddlebag frame, and the 4 on the luggage rack, which I can now get to.)
I took some pics with the tourpack off (and stock sundowner pillon in place). It looks pretty good with the batwing and a clean rear. But I really need the storage for the laptop and reserve gas tank. In all my mods, I have yet to do anything that is permanent. (Which is likely a good thing, as I keep modding it).
BTW: I had the 50K mile service done. For the first time, when they performed the "cam service", they replaced the valve cover gasket set, which includes the 4 round thingies into which I had embedded some 'farkles' (cross hatched HD stick-on 'bling'). I put them on at about 20K mikes, and supposedly, the cams have been adjusted every 10K miles since, but this is the first time they replaced these parts! (With the new management at the Allen HD, almost everyone in the service department is new). The 'bling' thingies are definately not transferrable. The dealer charge for this, including my 9th rear tire, was $650, which was covered by my lifetime maintenance program (I pay 1 hour labor for the tire). I had all the fluids replaced, as well as the rear pads, and I was charged an additional $425 (2 hrs -$169 of which was because of all the electronics I had located in the airbox).
DPierce02 05-07-2007, 09:31 AM Daniii
that extra width seat should do the trick for comfort.
my wife would probably like the extra width also. i may look into doing the sme thing if my wife says she is uncomfortable.
sounds like you got the bike just about right.
have they had to adjust the valves when they Check them. seems to still be a lot of opinions on when to check valve clearences due to the cost of labor.
i will do my own when the time comes but just not sure at what mileage that should be except what HD recommends. i think Max has posted he has checked his a couple of times and still has not had to reshimm.
Dennis
Jetgod 05-07-2007, 10:22 AM I gave up on making the V comfortable for my SO. Her biggest complaint was the lack of leg room. I went and bought a Road King for two up and can now make the V my PERSONAL ride!

The service tech wasn't available when I picked up the bike, so I don't know what they did. I do know that they did adjust/change some shims at least once in the past (whether it needed it or not is a good question). It is interesting that this is the first time I had the used gaskets (and round thingies) returned to me. (Since I have a pre-paid maintenance contract, I haven't been real concerned). I'll be picking up the wife's bike today, so I'll ask and report.
The Sporty sundowner mod was realtively simple. I hollowed out the Sporty foam to conform with the existing stock V-Rod pillon foam, and lopped off the excess front and back molded foam. The plastic base accepts staples from a staple gun, so that part was relatively simple as well. Doing it without the Sporty Sundowner as a start, however, would be problematic.
dbeadling 05-07-2007, 10:55 AM just get a trailer hitch and a trailer.... take it over to lazy boy and have them bolt one on the trailer for the wife.
Diamond Lil 05-07-2007, 01:04 PM Daniii,

If you have to explain to anyone, they just wouldn't understand.

Thanks! Re the bags, its a mixed bag. Val coined the term "FPOS bags" after she and I both lost gloves when the FPOS lids blew open while riding! I put buckles on my first set to keep them closed (after losing two left gloves!). I still have the buckles. Supposedly the newer type II are better. This summer will tell, but I'm keeping them well lubed and in the shade as much as possible. We'll see.
Okie, of course, uses his hard bags as a cooler: "hey bud, yur bags a sweatin"

You know that FPOS company makes a great deal of stuff! I think I have some of it too!:)
DesertSpeed 05-07-2007, 09:19 PM We took our seat to a custom seat builder and for about $150 he said the rear seat would be different but couldn't guarantee it would be better. I can't see spending $1,000 for Corbin seats.

Daniii 05-08-2007, 05:46 PM Spoke to the tech. The valves didn't require any adjustment. So after 50K miles, my valves apparently needed to be adjusted just once.

thanks for the follow-up Daniii.
looks like with that and what Max has said i will probably wait until i get up there in miles and just pay attention to the familiar noises and if something changes investigate from there.
ride safe and if you are going to Sturgis maybe we can meet again like Gunners only with more parking.

DesertSpeed 05-09-2007, 11:21 AM seems to me u dont put trailer hitch and whitewalls on a corvettte ? so why do people garbage up performance sport bikes ,?
Even Corvettes carry two people. The Vette is a performance car. The V-rod is a performance cruiser, not a sport bike. If you don't want to ride double, get a sport bike and do a wheelie. Jump one of the new 600 class sport bikes sometime if you think the V-rod is a sport bike. He'll have your coffee waiting at the next gas station.
vroder 05-09-2007, 12:34 PM I've seen Corvettes pullin' boats. It's all about what floats yours.:D
Daniii 06-15-2007, 03:19 PM I moved this to the Bagger section!

You risk underestimating the work of art you've created. Rube would be proud.
Daniii 06-15-2007, 10:32 PM Yea, the 'sportster' on the side is a bit tacky. I usually keep the sheepskin on to cover it up.
capngeo 06-15-2007, 10:34 PM Seein' as I froze my arse off last winter (Yeah I know..... but it does get cold here).. I'm thinking about going with the engine bars/bras and an ultimate touring windshield for this winter.... What kind of bars you guys using??? Pros/Cons??

I'm thinking about going with the engine bars/bras and an ultimate touring windshield for this winter.... What kind of bars you guys using??? Pros/Cons??Standard HD engine guard, and any HD hiway peg will fit (even though they say they won't). I had my engine guard chaps custom made to clear the hiway pegs. Feet are toasty warm down to 20F. But they gotta come off when its hotter than 70F. There is a company in Ft Worth (Hoggchopps.com) that makes fairing lowers for Road Kings. We held one up to my engine guards in their booth at ROT, and they can be modified, pretty easily, to work. But I gotta engineer some kind of opening vent to keep my feet from cooking in the summer. Its a thought....
Wait till Lux gets a look at this.....

Hmmmm.. ya got me thinking! I'm a pretty fair hand at fiberglass.... I wonder how tough it would be to make something that comes off the rad shrouds for the winter! Might have to investigate that one.
I'll bet you guys laugh at me way down here sayin' its cold, but I rode from Sorrysota-Key West last winter at 45F! Thought I moved next to Mikep!

I have to say i agree with this. I just couldn't do that to a V-rod. It's kinda like putting white walls on a Ferrari.
Daniii 06-18-2007, 04:28 PM You guys wanna chip in and buy me a second bike, and I'm with you! In the meantime, I ride to work everyday, and as far as I can every weekend (when its not farkin raining). Remember, things are a 'fur piece' here in Texas.
