Kaz,
I'll be up your way for the 500 mile Vegas-to-Reno desert race late in June. I'll arrive probably Thursday June 24 late morning, and stay the night someplace in Vegas. The race starts very early Friday morning, I think somewhere out around Pahrump. We expect to be on the bike for 14 to 16 hours non-stop except for 2 or 3 gas pit stops. This race will be a real good test of just how rugged the V-Rod motor really is in nasty conditions. Can you turn on the outdoor air conditioning NOW so we'll be cool out there on the sun baked course in late June!

I have been as busy as a one armed paper hanger and running all over the country when my flights are not delayed...... But, I have run two races - finished tied for third in one and tied for forth in the other - treed on both.... in second in the points at the moment - one point behind a zx12 with an old hand and 8 time motorcycle class champion... so keeping my head above water for the time. Rick, did you go from a 28 tooth to the 22/68 setup - I am going to order a 66 tooth today - geared for 117mph in 5th and 90 in third(for eigth mile) @ 9,000 RPM - I need to figure out how to hook up the race tuner - then I will push the rev limiter to 10,000 from current 9,400 - will move shift light from 8,625 to 8875 which is as far as the dyna shift minder will let it go. This will give me 10% head room on top speed. Was your improvement in time just from the gearing? Are those numbers on your big bore(zippers)? Were you riding or red light pete? BTW - my son has arrived home from college and has agreed to help with the site so progress should be forth coming.

I didn't make it to the strip last night... too many preparations for the weekend. I need a wife or something, darn it! Someone to do the laundry, grocery shopping, take the dog to the kennel... LOLOL!!!

John took the Sportster up there... he and Carl made it to the 3rd round of eliminations. Guess there were 23 bikes running in the money class, and only a handful in the trophy class ($%#$%#@%*%$ wish I had been there!!!) I was pretty much asleep by the time he came home, so I haven't gotten the full "download" yet on their night. Guess there was a guy up there racing a stretched Firebolt - now THAT would have been something to see!

I'm a little shy 'bout throwing up my Tiller pics cuz they're pretty far off-topic for this forum (being a Suzuki and whatnot). But if it's okay with you guys, I'd love to share!

05-27-2004, 02:29 PM
Aw, shux... now I'm feeling all warm and fuzzy-like! Yanno, each of you is welcome to come out for an event if we're ever in your area. Admission to a race day gets you full access to the entire paddock area... and there is usually no charge to spectate on the practice "track days".

Speed? Hmmm... depends a lot on the track and which corner... we measure it more in minutes/seconds rather than mph. I know the front straight at Blackhawk is good for about 140-150 mph... you can also get ungodly fast at "bigger" tracks like Road America (180 +/-) and Brainerd Int'l. Raceway (with it's mile-long front straight)...

Blackhawk (my home track) is a 1.95 mile course. Track record on a bike is 1:09... set by Larry Denning on an R1 last summer. Most of our top riders are doing :11-:13. I'm a good 12-15 seconds off of that pace (at best, I'm a "mid-pack" amateur)... what's nice is, there are folks at all different levels in the same race - there's always someone to chase (or be chased by).

KB - What kind of times does John turn on the SPortster - I just started my two sons racing - a 03 sporster...
Kaz I talked to Sam - and as you said he is getting some 26 tooth sprockets made up - so I told him to put me on the list. I do like that guy - always enjoy talking to him - you need to get terry to join this board - it sounds like he is going to have quite the year.... he is in second place thus far. Kevin

The Sporty runs pretty consistently in the high 10's... it's an 89 that has had some minor "tweeking" (it was built to be legal in the AMRA's M/XL class back in the early '90's and I think the ex may have had a championship on it). After my ex-husband stopped running it, it sat in crates in the BF's basement for several years... he dug it out, put it together and I think the only thing that's been done to it since is a little "freshen-up" and paint.

I was hoping we would go to BeaverRun this year, but the closest we'll be is Grattan Raceway, near Grand Rapids, MI. Doing a couple track days there next weekend, then participating in an endurance race on June 12. We'll be back there again later in the season for at least one more track day weekend.

Grattan is a pretty good track from the spectator perspective... standing in the paddock you can see most of the back half of the track. It's not the easiest sport to watch "live", which might partially explain why roadracing is so unknown compared to other motorsports.

"Kneedraggers ball"... sounds like a party that must be thrown this winter!

I red lit first round @ .494 after a .507 and .517 in time trials. Ran my best 11.59 @ 114.89 at Friday night street wars - broke out in semis of gamblers race chasing a 15 second cage. dialed 11.64 figuring that I would roll off once I ran him down - we both broke out - I crossed finish line .002 before him but he had me by .008 on the tree therefore double breakout and him by less me on the trailer for the night. Ran a VROD in first round - I was dialed at 11.68 - other at 11.69 - I had the tree by .1 then bounced the rev limiter between 1st and 2nd and that was all she wrote - he pulled ahead and there was nothing I could do to catch up - it can be a drag.... started using the electric shift - had it jump out of second twice - I didn't like that, any suggestions..... current plan to clutch shift 1 to 2 until setup can be refined.... pushed the turn signal by mistake in one time trial - damn thing didn't shift at all on that run.....confused but working on it....KSP

Impressive runs on 135HP @ 750lbs..... and what happened with the 1.762 - forget that he was racing - of course that is better than my best I think . Oh to be skinny - but just remember - fat boys rule :) and Shawn - I am curious - what were the obvious reasons?
