: Cooling fan question
Bruce Helland 04-29-2004, 02:14 AM Wondering if I have a problem with my cooling fans. I have loaded MJW's map on my race tuner. What I have seemed to notice is that my fans haven't kicked in even with extended city riding. They seemed to come on quite a bit before the change. I also had the 10000 mile service done prior to the download. Wondering if MJW's map would affect the turn on temp for the fans? Or perhaps at the service something got disconnected. Tried a different fan relay on a chance that may work but no difference. While its still cool outside, I'd like to investigate before it gets hot. Thanks for any help or hints. Bruce Helland
brent_walkoviak 04-29-2004, 08:38 AM I can tell you while riding in temps in the 50 - 60's in FL my fans came on very rarely (even in stop and go traffic), and when they did it wasnt for very long.
mjw930 04-29-2004, 09:36 AM Bruce,
The map has no effect on that portion of the ECM code that controls the fans but the map is richer throughout the rev range, especially at cruise RPM's. Adding more fuel will make the motor run cooler. Hook up the RT and do a datalog run while you're cruising and look at the engine temperature to confirm.

Michael333 04-29-2004, 09:46 AM I would say.... You llive in Montana, it's April.... it's still relatively cool. (I lived in Montana for awhile -- God's country!!!) I live in NM, exclusive city riding, grilles, not shy with the throttle and have yet to have the fan come on.
Greg687 04-29-2004, 11:05 AM Here in El Paso, fans come on in stop and go traffic pretty often. even in the heat of summer, its rare for them to come on once I get moving.
mr_vrodder 04-29-2004, 11:54 AM My fans come on every time I'm in traffic (spring in the UK, so not really hot, been up to about 20degC). Bikes an 04 model.
Rich Moran 04-29-2004, 04:11 PM Riding the v-Rod with 15.5K miles on it in Hawaii tend to make the fans turn on more frequently than most I'd say. They only run when I am foot dragging in slow traffic through Waikiki on Kalakaua Avenue in 85 degree temperatures. When they flip on, they run for maybe a minute or so, shut down, and then if stuck in traqffic, turn on again within a few minutes. Then, they only run for a minute or so, and are off again.
Freeway stuff is different, until there is a real reason to stop on the freeway in traffic. Such as an accident. Then the fans will flip on and run for a longer period until the motor temp. seems to drop to a lower temp. Then the fans run more intermittent such as described above.
What I find strange is when I make it to the house, about a mile from the freeway exit, I shut down the bike, and the fan turns on for about 15 to 30 seconds, and then shuts off.
Greg687 04-29-2004, 05:45 PM mine does that too Rich... must be set up that way
Bruce Helland 04-30-2004, 02:31 AM Thanks for the replys. I'm going to borrow a non contact infra-red thermometer and see what temp readings I get. Manual says fan on at 205'F and off at 195'F. This is on an '02. MJW did you notice a drop in milage? I seem to have lost some with the change. By the way, I still have the 30 tooth pully on. Long ways between places up here. Thanks and safe riding! Bruce Helland

That's the way it's supposed to work, the temperature circuit doesn't shut off when you turn the key off. When you stop & turn the motor off, the coolant stops circulating, the radiator doesn't have any air moving thru, and the coolant in the engine jacket rises in temperature right away. The fans will come on for a little bit to help cool it if the coolant temperature is above the setpoint.

Yes, I did see some loss in mileage. Some due to the added fuel and some due to my overactive right hand ;)
I went from about 41 to about 38 with the change from the base map AND the 28T.
Zijspan 04-30-2004, 11:00 AM Here's some temperature related info from this related post:
http://www.v-rodforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=46689#post46689
Relevant numbers:
- Coolant thermostat begins to open at 185F.
- Fans turn off below 195F.
- Fans turn on above 203F (according to manual), mine goes on at 205F.
- Thermostat is fully open at 212F.
- Temperature lamp off below 220F.
- Temperature lamp on above 235F.
If you're willing to get into the wiring, you can tap into the ECT Engine Coolant Temperature sensor (back side of water pump, between cylinders) with a volt meter. Connect + lead to Pink/Yellow wire, and - lead to Black/White wire. Same connections are available on the Instrument Module connector (same color wires, + = Pin 6, - = Pin 26). To convert this voltage to temperature, follow this conversion table:
Voltage | Temp (degrees F)
4.02V = 14F
3.52V = 32F
2.94V = 50F
2.35V = 68F
1.81V = 86F
1.35V or 4.05V = 104F *
0.99V or 3.7V = 122F *
3.31V = 140F
2.88V = 158F
2.46V = 176F
2.06V = 194F
1.71V = 212F
1.40V = 230F
* Between 104F and 122F, the ECM changes scaling. Voltages for ECT sensor will shift scales in that range. This provides proper sensor resolution for all temperatures.
Bruce Helland 05-04-2004, 09:42 PM Thanks for the info. Checked it out with the IR themometer today. Was 85 degrees out , back in town from 40 mile freeway ride. Idling in my friends driveway fans kicked on at 209 measured at the bottom of the radiator. Temp at the top was 220. Fans kicked off at 190 again measured at bottom of radiator. Guess it works! Just a little worried because it was different than before. Must be the lower restriction plus richer mixture. Peace of mind. Thanks all. Enjoy the ride! Bruce Helland :jeannie:
