: How long does it take to do a BB install?
WipeOut 09-03-2005, 11:13 AM Was just looking at the shop manual and it looks like a major job to do a big bore.. By the look of it the ENTIRE engine has to be stripped then the casing machined and then the whole thing reassembled..
Also it looks like it needs the use of quite a few "special" tools so its not somthing that the average Joe can do in the Garage..
So what the usual time it takes to disassemble and reassemble a revo engine?
Vrod-tlam 09-03-2005, 11:34 AM Definitely not for the average Joe, it's not just a matter of unbolting everything getting some machining and re-bolting & ready to go, much more involved

From look at the shop manual I couldn't agree more.. Looks like a major job, which says to me its probably VERY expensive.. :(
Hopefully at the end of next year (when the warranty is up) there is someone in the UK who can do a BB and hoefully I can afford it seeing as I probably won't be able to do it myself so the labour costs will be pretty huge.. :broke:
Maybe bolt on upgrades will have to be the way to go..
V-Rod I FL 09-06-2005, 06:13 PM My suggestion would be to ship your bike here for Daytona Bike Week and come along with it for a short vacation. THEN when youare thru, eith send it or have it picked up in Daytona by Tilley's HD (Neil Taylor) Statesville, NC, or Eagle HD (Paul) Indianappolis, IN or V-MOD (Steve) in Wisconsin. and have them do the complete job.
Besides the tools you will need and the experience factor involved, there is a great deal of very precise machining that needs to be done. The cases have to be "split" and redecked to accomodate the enlarged "holes" for the pistons. A 140 hp (REAR WHEEL) Big Bore can cost up to $7k which would include remapping and dyno tuning the completed job to ensure that it is performing optimmally.
Also if you don't have one already, a Harley Race Tuner software (SERT) will need to be purchased. $430 along with some new pipes --Super Trapp --etc.
The labor is approximitely 3.5 hours to R&R the motor, about 4-6 hours to reassemble the new motor and 4-5 hours to dyno tune the completed product.
I hope this helps you in your planning.
OH YEA, no matter who you choose, AFTER you twist the throttle a few times you will agree that the cost was worth it.
Cheatin 09-06-2005, 06:19 PM Guess it depends on how many times you want to do it...better ask BADVR for the lowdown. :hmm:
WipeOut 09-07-2005, 02:42 AM Thanks "V-Rod I FL".. Some useful ideas there..
Will have to see how the cash flow goes over the next year or so and take it from there, warranty is only up in March 07 so any major surgery would only happen after that..
mr_vrodder 09-07-2005, 06:14 AM Whatever you do Wipeout, don't let me have a go on your bike when you've done the BB. It will just put me in some "serious" sh1t, when I tell her indoors "I'm having one too" It's kinda up to me chin already.

mr_vrodder, believe me I know the feeling..
Thats why I am giving myself about 18 months to try and plan for it but if the cash flow doesn't support it by then it won't be happening..
I have punished the cards enough already.. :bash:
ABQNMVROD 09-07-2005, 01:55 PM Had HD SE 1250 BB plus SE slip fits, K&N filter and PC III done to 05b with 186 miles on new bike. About $5200
Dealer took 18 days to complete.
Considerations:
The engine seems rock solid, well done. Has used about 1/4 qt of oil in about its first 1150 miles since the rebuild.
Riding, accelerating, not even sure I can tell there is an increase in HP w/1250 kit other than dyno reading. If you want to BB and can afford it, might want to consider BB > 1300cc
Note in USA, somewhere about 1200cc displacement, insurance costs more. Increasing the covered value of my bike $5000 plus the increase in displacement from 1130 to 1250 doubled my annual insurance cost.
And tearing the bike apart for the big bore, things may not work the same when the bike is put back together, it is a big job.
Since the BB, have had problems: Bike misses intermittently but frequently and severely enough that in 1st the bike jerks, and you still hear and feel it in 2nd and 3rd, up to about 4300 rpm; heavy oil mist spraying out into air box soaked air filter (I check and fill oil on a lift when bike is level and always leave it down about 1 mm on stick when engine hot so never overfilled); when pull in clutch and release gas, idle drops really low, bike almost stalls then idle picks up to normal; gears grind going from 1st to 2nd regardless how you operate throttle and clutch. Also some black smoke comes out exhaust when riding and a lot of black smoke when you accelerate it at all quickly.
None of those things happened before the BB and have been ongoing since then. Also, when I got the bike back, the engine was 1 1/3 Qt low on oil. A critical fastener fell out as I was parking after a 75 mph highway ride. One of the rubber grommets was missing which the metal airbox cover slips into so the airbox rattles.
Other than a road rescue for the missing bolt, dealer insisted I wait to see if these problems cleared up as the engine broke in- and if not, to mention it to them at the 1,000 mile service. I objected strongly they fix them "now" but they insisted problems "should go away as the engine breaks in." None of them did.
The bike has now been at the dealer for 4 working days for the 1,000 mile service and a look at the ongoing problems.
The hopefully good news is the bike should be ready for me after work today. They expressed confidence they solved these problems plus some other concerns I had. After over 1100 miles of this, am looking forward to riding a bike that doesn't spit and sputter it's way along.
V-Rod I FL 09-07-2005, 02:33 PM I suggest you cancel the warranty get the refund from Harley and match it with your "Piggy Bank Funds" and select a builder for your 1320 or 1340 or 1550 V-Rod.
Your new motor will be warrantied from the builder unless you do something like forget to keep oil or coolant and water in it.
Ceatin is right about BADVR and his recent "build" IF you want to spend over $10k for what he has.
"IT'S ALL ABOUT MONEY" !!!
