Thanks for the insight - ordering issue is in hand..... sounds like there is really strong demand - considering how specialized - (i.e. purpose built) these machines are. I hope HD finds this effort to be a great success.

My dealer ordered 3! I told the SM yesterday that I'ld ride one of them for the shop at the local drag strip. The had a racer, but parted ways last year. I would love to try my skills on the bike.

I think it's a cool deal.......I guess......but, as much as I hate to say it.....you could buy a used mid 9 second bracket assassin for about 1/6th the price if it had Suzuki on the tank.......with all the same goodies....

I guess they are going to be offered with a "non-DOT" title.....race only kinda deal.....just seems kinda pricey to go mid 9's with a bar on it......plus it doesn't take near the talent to run that quickly with a bar......we've got a guy in our points series that never rode a street bike AT ALL, and climbed on a GS1100 (bar/slick bike) running 9.30's......
Guess I'm just not partial to having a grocery cart hanging behind me.....

mikelewis
07-25-2005, 03:33 PM
I guess I should state that I WILL ride one for Cycle Connection if that's the direction they wish to go........for the record......he he he......but it's gonna be huffing N2O if I have anything to do with it.......would be alot more respectable in my book running mid 8's on one......

kspz3
07-25-2005, 04:32 PM
Mike - just take the bars off.... 4 bolts will do it for you - It looks to me that it will run similar times to what you have in the one you built...... Now I am only speculating but my guess is that it about a 10.00 wthout the bars and a healthy 200 lb rider. Hard launch may pull another .10 to .20 with the bars - and a diet might pul a couple of extra tenths...... by my way of ciphering....... definatly not the cheapest route into the nines.... but as we both know - VRods aren't known as the low cost ride.

mikelewis
07-25-2005, 04:41 PM
yup, take the bars off.......wait a minute!....that's basically what I have now!
They are saying 170hp on gas though.....very healthy numbers ......
don't know how they can do that out of such a small motor......

kspz3
07-25-2005, 04:54 PM
I saw 165 - I am assuming that is at the crank..... therefore 145 to 150 RWHP - just my interpratation of the published litature. Race gas also - 14:1 set-up . It is similar to what you have - just factory built - The nice part is that it will allow allot of dealers to get into racing without a major build program - also allows anyone that wants to race without the hassle of building to buy a factory prepped model - all the specs look pretty impressive to me. Dealer sponsorship will be important to the success of this product.... KSP

mikelewis
07-25-2005, 05:04 PM
6-o-one, half dozen of another......
We're getting 160 rwhp but it's taking 1550cc to do it......with 11.5 to 1 CR......
I think even with a wheelie bar, the projected 9:50's would require a jockey for a rider.....they said it even includes an MTC lockup.....I wonder what the factory setup is in the clutch?

- "over 165 horsepower" **claims they were told more like 175 @ 10,000 RPM (165 is @ 9700 RPM
- Torque 97 @ 7600 RPM
- compression 14.0:1
- MTC multi stage lock up clutch with electronic-over-air shifting system
- hand controls look stock, convereted and labeld for shifting
- Insists that below 9 second times have been achieved.

The literature insists that BELOW nine second times have been achieved???? Are you sure it says "BELOW 9 second times"??? Based on the HP numbers presented and the weight......that's an outright lie!.......I think it must either be a typo or perhaps you're reading it incorrectly.....if not.....it's a flat out lie.....based on simple physics, it's absolutely impossible....

you very well may be right, certanly it sounds like you are more qualified thank I to make that judgement. Literature does not say under 9. That is simply what the dealer insists they were told at the dealer meeting. that it has been done. Actual figure given was in the very high 8s... rest of the figures were read off the brochure.

Hmm, sounds pretty slick.
Dunno about sub 9's though, mid to high mebbe with a top jockey.
I've just spent a fortune on a purpose built race rod so I won't be buying, sure as hell would if I had the money though :broke:

Leadfoot
07-26-2005, 05:40 PM
No way below 9's out of the box but mid 9's sound reasonable with pro rider; AHDRA bikes are running mid 9's at 82 ci and the VRXSE is 79 ci.

mikelewis
07-26-2005, 05:55 PM
I'm sure that even mid to low 8 second passes are indeed possible on the bike with adders (turbo and/or nitrous)...but normally aspirated "out of the crate" it is impossible.....my rule of thumb on a bike is 20# = 1/10 second in the quarter...ie shed 20lbs and pick up a tenth in the quarter......so technically the rider would have to weigh less than my 4 year old daughter to run an 8 on it......oh, wait a minute, Kaz?......are you there?.......
Seriously though.....they obviously misunderstood......maybe the person said it could run high 8's with adders or something and they missed that part....but not like it is....
They need to be very careful about what they say though.....this bike is meant for the drag racing rider.....and most of them are going to wonder why the thing only runs mid 9's (at best) and they were told it would run high 8's......not good PR, ya know?
Better off to stick with just quoting horsepower numbers and when they ask how quick?......just shrug shoulders and smile......better business......

According the the formulas that were given here a while ago with a very light rider (Kaz is 140 lbs.) you could achieve an 8.99 with about 182 HP. But since the math is all theoretical and there have been claims as high as 175HP out of the box, I'm sure that a few horses less with a VERY skilled rider might just do the trick. Also, I'm wondering if this thing already runs NOS. Sure looks like a NOS bottle on the on picture they have on the web site (where a bag would be on the left side...)

Of course with a very FAT rider like myself, best you could hope for is about high 9's...

Correct, on top of which if you look at HD's claimed weights in their promo material against the measured weights in the road tests (this is especially true for the street rod), there is around a 15 to 25 Kg discrepancy.
Sub 9 is not realistic in the real world, in truth I'd be suprised if Joe Normal (that's me) could break into the 9's with this machine straight out of the box, in fact he'd probably get into some real difficulty with the wheelie bar fitted. :2cents:

kspz3
07-26-2005, 07:42 PM
Actually times on a drag bike setup with wheelie bars should be mostly dpeendant on rider weight. It comes equipped with a two step - so you open the throttle completely when staged and it holds the rev at a predetermined place - then drop the clutch for launch.... then when the shift light comes on you push the button....... Mike of course is right in his numbers at about a tenth per 20 lbs..... let me go and calculate for a second on 175, which sounds optomistic at the real wheel.... KSP

Antifog stuff works ok for the glasses but not as good on the shield - tends to make weird night light streaks on your shield creating a strange and distracting effect as you count down the lights..... I bought a Simpson Helmet with a big breath gaurd and anti og shield........ and it does the trick pretty well.

Correct me if I am wrong,b ut doesn't this bike already come with a bottle on it? If you look at the pictures on the http://trevdeeley.nolet.com/class/display.html?id=854 the third and forth pics bothe show a bottle attached on the right side about the foot peg.

Antifog stuff works ok for the glasses but not as good on the shield - tends to make weird night light streaks on your shield creating a strange and distracting effect as you count down the lights..... I bought a Simpson Helmet with a big breath gaurd and anti og shield........ and it does the trick pretty well.

use a dual lens shield ,, no fog issues on the snowmobile ,, 100mph , 10 below zero / 98.6 inside

160 orders at the dealer show. (there will be more as word spreads.) 150 were scheduled in 2 initial builds, 100 first, then 50. But there is capability to increase the second run. Expect some to end up as coffee table ornaments.Holy Horsepower Batman, they've got 400 orders for these as of end of last week!!!
It seems the initial order estimates have been Destroyed!

Ok I think I just messed up.

I went by my dealer talking to the GM about the bike and he said he was looking at it but didnt have anyone in mind to ride. Well yesterday was the 10th and orders had to be in by the 8th. I told him if anything changed on being able to order that I would ride it for him. Now Im kicking myself in the ass for not getting to the daeler sooner.

If anyone knows of a way to still get on the list please let me know And I will get with the dealer.

when my order went in, they reportedly had 275 orders, that was on Sunday mid-day. Anyone want to talk some sense in to me...... I am a 40 something guy who loves motorcycles, but probably kidding myself about racing this thing....... and it may be a very expensive coffee table ornnament.

rub if you can afford one and want one who cares what you do with it. I envy you for being able to have that coffee table ornament, you go for it brother. We will expect a large number of photos for the forum however.

Mike - just take the bars off.... 4 bolts will do it for you - It looks to me that it will run similar times to what you have in the one you built...... Now I am only speculating but my guess is that it about a 10.00 wthout the bars and a healthy 200 lb rider. Hard launch may pull another .10 to .20 with the bars - and a diet might pul a couple of extra tenths...... by my way of ciphering....... definatly not the cheapest route into the nines.... but as we both know - VRods aren't known as the low cost ride.

what! what! say it my brotha!!!!" arent known as the low cost ride " if had the cash id buy it! that bike will be a collector one day...

put a delay box and a hydraulic clutch release and give them a taste of their own medicine, Kevin! Tear 'em a new one!

I am thinking that an air clutch might work..... have you used on of those beforeMike?

mikelewis
09-13-2005, 12:29 PM
Yeah, I've used it....works pretty well if you have the air source......also you can use an $80 NCC timer instead of a $600 crossover delay box if you can add/subtract numbers quickly......
If you get ready to do it, let me know.....we'll get more into the specifics.......
