: Anybody been to Germany or Live there?
scubacrazy 06-09-2005, 10:33 PM Hey guys/gals looking for a little help/info. My wife is an army reservist, and will be on a mission in Germany starting saturday and will be home the following saturday, My question is how much is food there? I know our dollars are only worth like .80 and have heard that food is high, so how much money will she need for a week. Shes an officer so the army does not pay for it, and shes kinda snippy so, shes to proud to ask someone whos been to germany. I want to know because I dont want her walking around with tons of cash in a foreign country. Thanks everyone. :)
Jan-Dirk, our German Mod, is probably passed out recovering from his 40th birthday celebrations, but I'm sure you'll hear from him soon...
In the meantime, I'm going to move this thread to the German forum as they have the most recent/relevant info for you!
scubacrazy 06-09-2005, 10:57 PM thanks val, new my brothers and sisters would be able to help me out.
they'll probably invite her home...
scubacrazy 06-09-2005, 10:59 PM if they will help out with the bills......
sastard 06-09-2005, 11:07 PM Most places accept Visa and Mastercard. So, carry some cash and these cards, and you will be fine.
Whatever you would normally carry in American dollars, just replace with Euros and that should get you by.
EUROVROD 06-09-2005, 11:24 PM Hi Scuba,
Besides being German, I just got back from Frankfurt yesterday. Depending on your wifey's eating (and shopping) habbits, she should be ok with Euro 30-40 a day. Tell her to stay away from the gummi bears and she should be fine. However, if she discovers the fine flavors of Schweinshaxe and German beer/wine, she'll be in trouble (or you, depending on who's bucks she's spending).
Wishing her a great trip und gute Reise.
Axel :ride:
Jan-Dirk 06-10-2005, 12:18 AM Actually I (just) got up at 05:00 o'clock - so much to "the day after" ;)
Scuba,
during the week many restaurants do a so called "Mittagstisch" (meal of the day), a fair priced lunch (12:30 - 14:30) meal that costs between 6 and 8 Euros without drink.
Advise her to stay away from Mc Donald's & co and to frequent local places instead. Most restaurants have a pricelist food&drinks displayed outside at the front door.
Beer prices are around 3,6 Euro for half a litre in a pub, it's cheaper in south Germany.
Where about will she stay?

rjrivero 06-10-2005, 12:20 AM Have her use her Government Issue Charge card and forget about carrying too much cash altogether.
scubacrazy 06-10-2005, 09:38 AM Yeah wish it was easy as a gov charge card, shes a reservist, they dont get them. Or at least she hasnt gotten one, shes only been a commissioned officer for 2 years- enlisted for 12. Thanks everyone for your help. I think she will be staying in Vilsec? somewhere close to Grafenvhor? Not sure if I spelled those names right.
Sam_A 06-10-2005, 10:00 AM The food is awesome. A little on the heavy side. Great salads.
Crash 06-10-2005, 05:16 PM Been there and live there...
If she can use an ATM when she arrives, that'll be the easiest way to get money (and the best exchange rate) Food and beer are about the same as in an American restaurant (price-wise). Germany is great - I think she'll really like it!
monobo 06-10-2005, 09:13 PM She could make her way to teh Army base out there and buy stuff at the post.
badluck1 06-16-2005, 08:34 PM Just came back from 4 months in Germany. Been there many times and love it. She can get by on about the same money as in the states. As said, seriously stay away from the fast food, you can get that crap anywhere. Germany has so many great mom and pop size places in every town she will have no trouble getting a good meal for a reasonable price. Plus the hospitality is really great also, as long as you don't act like a typical loud mouth, obnoxious, pompus American.
Ah, I know, where she stays: at Grafenwöhr! Thats a very small village deep in the bavarian countryside. So she's not in the near of a bigger city like Munich. OK, that's deep, deep province. So she might be eat better in the officer-casino, no chance to have a first class restaurant tere arround.
Was there myself during my selective service 1979 for target practise, what indeed is the best, you can do there. There is simply nothing arround there.
Yeah wish it was easy as a gov charge card, shes a reservist, they dont get them. Or at least she hasnt gotten one, shes only been a commissioned officer for 2 years- enlisted for 12. Thanks everyone for your help. I think she will be staying in Vilsec? somewhere close to Grafenvhor? Not sure if I spelled those names right.
VrodG 06-24-2005, 08:16 AM Germany is great !!!!! I spent 18 months in Nuremberg working for Uncle Sam. They have a very CLEAN country along with nice people and some of the best beer and food you'll eat. If I every get a chance to go back it wouldn't take long to back the bags. She should take some time if she can to see the country side it's something she'll remember for life !!!!!!
