: Mirror fix?
Frankster 05-01-2005, 12:40 PM Been holding out for a Rod with a better seating postion that the V-Rod and I liked what they did with the Street Rod.
Did a 50 mile test ride a couple of weeks ago, and keep thinking of how to fix the shortcoming of the street rod, to make it work for me.
Windscreen
Angle of the gauges
Rear brake pedel position
Seat
Mirrors
Has anyone figured out how to make the mirrors work so they can actually see something besides their arms??

This may be the curse of motorcycles.
All I see in V's mirrors is my elbows unless I tuck them in a tad. Good news is that at night I don't get blinded by someone's brights.
You think that's bad? Take a Duc out for a ride. Mirrors are totally useless.

As suggested here on the forum, bar-end mirrors work very well. If you look closely in the "this doesn't happen on a Honda" thread, you can see the bicycle bar-ends mirrors I installed on my R.

Oh yea, now I see them. Was too busy looking at the ladies and missed them.
How do they attach ???

You have to cut the end out of the rubber grip, insert bar-end into handlebar, turn a screw that expands a fitting inside the handlebar tube. It was simple on the clutch side, took a little trimming/fiddling to eliminate interference with throttle.
V-Fred 05-01-2005, 03:13 PM Joker Machine sells some hollow sleeves that allow you to mount the mirrors in the clutch and brake pivot holes. Have them on my bike and they work slick. You have to watch how much you tighten them down or the clutch and brake will not work smoothly. The mirrors stay firm in place (at least with the star washer) though they can be knocked out of position more easily than if they are tightly mounted in the mirror holes. Moves the left mirror out about 1-1/4 inch and the right about 3/4 inch. It makes a difference, especially if you use mirrors with longer stems and/or convex mirrors (like the Kuryakyn Eclipse or signal mirrors.
Joker Machine item number: 960830 Set of 2 $13.90 plus shipping
They are not listed anymore on their on-line cataloge. Call them 909-613-0028

Jan-Dirk 05-01-2005, 04:29 PM I've installed small 2" extensions for the mirror "holders" - same type as V-Fred proposes, except that they only move the lot upwards. They are available from HD and don't cost much.
Make sure to get the metric size extensions (think it is M8).
werewulf 05-05-2005, 06:41 PM i use my mirrors a lot when i ride and the R is definately lacking. i bought the joker machine bar-end mirrors out of desparation. i left the stock mirrors on temporarily, for a comparison.
let me tell you, the stock mirrors will get you killed! i realized the stockers were convex and the objects are closer that they appear, but not that much! the jokers are flat glass and when the stockers showd it was clear to change lanes, the jokers told me i was going to get hit.
the jokers are small and leave a lot to be desired in rear vision, but they are rock solid and adjustable like those on a car. still they are a real improvement over the harleys.
BushRod 05-28-2005, 09:36 AM I Hate not being able to see behind myself, Aileron grips make bar end mirrors a no go, Has anyone tried the Anniversary Mirrors with the 2 inch extensions? the anniversary mirrors appear to be offset with more coverage to the outside instead of having stem connect in center as on stock mirrors..really want some mirrors to see behind myself..but before throwing away money on something that doesn't work, thought I would check with everyone else..if I can't find some to see behind me with then I will just get some that look better on bike than the stock units..short stemmed and billet probably..But would much prefer actually seeing whats approaching behind me..
With you on this one... hate not being able to take a quick look behind me on either side without doing a Toulouse Lautrec or actually shifting in the saddle... I don't grasp why 99% of all mirrors made are of a length suitable only for allowing us to admire our own deltoids... :banghead:
mitch2000 05-28-2005, 09:49 AM Yep, its still the one thing that is really annoying me...i quite fancy these mirrors (http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442292425&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302286627&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302286627&bmUID=1117287499893&bmLocale=en_US) but would prefer to see them on someone else's bike 1st...i might be waiting a long time :hmm:
werewulf 05-28-2005, 09:55 AM i had them on my fxdx and they performed in an acceptable manner, however with 6 months the chrome was toast! i replaced them with the black version and the coating was also starting to rust.
BushRod 05-28-2005, 10:01 AM Yep Those are the ones I was talking about, with the stem placement offset think maybe will be able to see a little more around my arms/shoulders, and adding HD's 2inch extensions..Maybe, just Maybe..but like you, I want to see if anyone else has tried them yet..don't want to find myself throwing away 2 sets of mirrors..

Hi Mitch
I tried them - they do not substantially help rear viewing. The look is "OK" but the only reason I still have them on is because I haven't found anything better (yet).
