Has any one begun accessorizing their R for sport touring duty? Mostly curious about luggage especially saddlebags that will work for some big mile days. HD has some genuine R bags that look pretty good but something aftermarket might be better for less coin.
I've got a 3 week vacation scheduled for July and I plan on riding from the NW to Deals Gap. Originally had planned on taking my Valkyrie but that was pre-VRSCR fever.
Got a little more info from local dealer re: valve adjustment, salesman says
"Valve lash is adjusted at every 12,000 miles (varies with frequency of operation and riding style)" Anybody else getting same info?
He's quoting $16495 OTD for the black I'm putting a deposit on tomorrow. Should have it in a couple of weeks.
TIA for any info

barnett 03-30-2005, 07:30 AM det..
i've added the windshield that H-D offers, along with the H-D bags and rack.
i figure i'll bungee a duffle on the rack. the bags don't hold a lot, but will work for rainsuit...tools...odds and ends etc. i also had an old 3 point mount
RKA tank bag that i added. all in all i don't know if i can carry as much touring "stuff" with this setup as on my GOLDWING but it should be close.
and a LOT MORE FUN. i also had my dealer install some heated grips.
good luck with your setup and your trip!

MrHD1 03-30-2005, 04:33 PM I have the full accessory package (bags, windshield, engine guard, luggage rack, etc.). What I think may have to be added to any serious sport touring this the sundowner seat. The stocker is hard and pretty much does my rear end in after 2 hours or so in the saddle. Not an all day ride in its present form.
HooliganVrod 03-30-2005, 04:41 PM There are numerous companies that make nice cordura bags and packs that would work well on an R model. They just won't bolt on like the HD parts.
George C. 03-30-2005, 08:50 PM det,
I bought the HD saddlebags, the sissy bar and backrest. I don't like the windshield for the R because it's pretty big. I'm hopeing Memphis Shades will come out with a small detachable sportshield that fits the R similar to the one they have for the Vrod. A couple years ago, I rode a Buell Firebolt 4600 miles from central Ohio to Arizona and back the long way. With a full face helmet, I got along fine without a windshield; you just have to clean the bugs off the visor and the front of your jacket every night.
It's surprising the amount of small stuff you can pack in the saddlebags. I will use the large SAC bag that slides over the passenger back rest for additional touring capacity. If you pack enough clothes for five days, that means only doing laundry twice on a two week trip. I can live with that; look for motels that have a washer and dryer for the guests, pack a pair of shorts to wear while the rest of your clothes are in the washer and dryer.
Take a small set of tools and a quart of oil besides the HOG Tour book, a towing card, and a cell phone to round out your touring essentials.
I am planning to do some long rides on my R this summer. Maybe we'll pass each other on the road somewhere; be sure to wave.

The neat thing about the HD bags for the R is that by simply pushing a button the bag detaches from the bracket making it easy to carry them into the motel room.

I hear ya on the big shield thing, small or nothing out front for me. I've got a garage full of soft luggage, RevPac, Tbag, eclispse saddlebags, Wolfman etc. that I use on my KLR and Valkyrie but none of it looks like it will go with the R without uglying it up bigtime LOL!
Hope we cross paths, I'll be the guy with bug splattered Nolan and Aerostich.
Put a deposit on the bike this morning, should have it at dealer next week.
beachbeemer 03-31-2005, 04:35 PM Mind telling us what the windshield, bags, and rack will cost?

The R specific stuff I looked at for genuine accessories were: windshield $330, rack $170, bags $560

Congrats on taking the big step!
The Tbag is similar to the SAC stuff and when going for that long ride of a week or two, ugly is beside the point. Carrying all the things you will need is what's important. The pocket on the back of the SAC bag slips down over the sissy bar/backrest with a couple straps to hold it firmly in place. What I like about the SAC is that the bags are guaranted for life so if a zipper rips out or you change bikes and need a different size pocket, it's replaced or fixed free.
Crilly 04-07-2005, 12:08 AM Before I went to Daytona, I put on the saddle bags, windshild, sundowner, engine guard, luggage rack , and passenger back rest. I also have a plate that I atach to the back rest, where I mount back to back T bags. I even but on a tank bag. All the storage anyone would need. 9400 miles on the R and counting.
