: Poor performance when cold

So, here is my long story.
My 2003 v-rod fell over on the right side due to the fuel flange problem. I was only going 5-10 mph up the ramp, when the bike sputtered and lurched. The dammage was really minimal, and i had harley pay for the repairs. Because my pipes were scratched, i had them replaced with S.E. stock looking pipes kit, with K&N filter and ECM download.
The bike performs really well, and has no problem except for when it's cold. I noticed, that after I had the SE installed, the bike performs very poorly when cold. If i accelerate mildly, the bike accelerates smoothly. If I try and gun it, I will feel mild acceleration, and the bike hesitate for 10 seconds and then respond the way it would when it is running hot. This is usually exhibited for the first 10-15 minutes of riding. Then everything is fine.
I had the fuel flange replaced.
Also, when i fill my gas tank all the way to the top, the fuel gauge gets stock on empty until i use up about 1/5 of the gas.

The Bike will not run above 8k till it warms up to 160+!In cold weather that could take a while! ;)

roman I run the SE setup on mine and don't see that problem at all. I do see what kaz has mentioned about the 8k rpm limit but when cold still no hesitation or other problems. You might ask the dealer to double check the flash and make sure it is correct. The fuel gauge problem you mention would be part of the flange kit and should be a warranty issue if they just replaced it.

A Power Commander would probably help too.

I am running the stock 16ga factory flash and see no performance problems, even when its 34F outside (like yesterday! burrrrr).

Thing is: Once the bike warms up it behaves very predictevly.
Throttle response is excellent. Red line is always at 9K(??)
THis only happens when the bike is cold. It could be 100 outside, it would still do it for a while, until the bike warms up.
Here is what i noticed:
When i was removing my airbox cover, to extract the battery, I noticed that the diagram in the parts catalog (Thanks Max) had a small gasket between the air box bottom and top. My bike did not have that gassket. Could that impact anything?
Thanks for all your help guys.

An air leak above the throttle plates should not cause a problem with driveability but is not desired for filtering. This uses what I would call a speed density system and has no MAF (mass air flow) to measure incoming air volume. It does use an IAT (intake air temp) sensor that can cause problems cold and it also uses a water temp sensor that can cause problems cold. If the flash is correct it could be a wiring problem or a sensor out of range. These are all guesses mind you.

Sence it getting cooler mine has been cold blooded. I wasn't sure if it was the cold weather or the -20 map that is a little rich maybe a combination of both?

I have the same problem with mine only until it warms up. I usually start it and warm it up about 5 minutes and then I'm all set...

I always start the bike and let it warm up.While it's warming up I smoke a cig.,get the gloves on,the jacket, last is the helmet when the cigs done.Takes about 5 mins.I haven't noticed any probs.

I did not have any cold problems until I went to the SE1 flash. Now that I have had a custom map done it seems to be worse. It has a real slow response when cold even if I let it warm up a little before riding. It's not so bad that I can't ride but I do have to baby it until it's warmed up. When it's at running temp it now runs like a scalded dog.

John, you nailed it right on the head.
That's exactly what i am currently dealing with.

I've got whatever flash they do for the 16ga and air filter, and have no cold perfortmance issues. Even whin its 29F (boy was that a cold ride).
