I'm looking for ideas. I want to replace those POS stock wheels with lighter ones.

Suggestions? (Sadly, carbon fiber is not a practical solution).

Hi Kim,
There aren't many options for stock size wheels (19 X 3 especially). Here are the two most popular.

Thanks, John! We looked at the PM wheels the last time we were in Daytona. While I thought the "Monaco"'s were sweeet... the problem is, they seemed to be just about as heavy as the stockers.

Last year, we talked about modding a set of sportbike rims but there are too many "projects" laying around the house already.

Has anybody else had a similar idea?

i had my stock rims slotted and chromed by Rowe Machine...
and had the stock rotors polished to a mirror finish...

You can also check out Weld Wheels. Seems they are finally making a 19x3 for the front. You're right, the PM's aren't much lighter than the stockers and I doubt any of the forged alluminum rims will be.

Check out the thread in the Products section on Dymag. They are looking to do both the Carbon and the Magnesium with various finishes (a chrome version as well) . Their price is not outrageous according the the post and it's probably going to be the only offering that will have any significant weight reduction.

To early to comment but I think there will be a New Player in the V-rod market with a few different wheels including a 3pc Hi Performance wheels set!:diablo:

Kim,

Check out the new wheel pics in the dymag thread in the products forum...

Chrome look wheels are also available and they save something like 25 pounds over stock wheels.

They are Carbon and they seem better than magnesium or aluminium in just about every respect.

Kaz, you need to share this new source with us!

I've already printed the thread and will be taking it to show John at lunchtime.

That 3-spoke wheel in chrome has me quite wound up!

I was at my dealer today and they had an all black '04 demo with a wire wheel on the front. Have to go back tomorrow to get details on it and give it a ride...

I personally thought it looked good. Reminded me of the Deuce with the wire front and solid rear. I'll see if I can get a pic or two to post.

We just put a set of the 80 spoke wire rims on a V-Rod we did, Looked pretty killer. Also these new spoke rims are tubeless as well.

I will see if anyone took some pictures here before it left the shop.

Redbud,

Thanks for that wheel link. Looks like these are something I'd be interested in. Manufacturers who are producing rims for sale at 1300.00 to 1800.00 bucks might finally have tyhier tails between there legs. Nothing like competition to tell the real story, specially the difference between forged and billet produced rims.

Sorry these took so long...the bike was getting a cosmetic upgrade on Saturday. They put on a custom paint set. I didn't get any details on the wheel, the guy who set up the bike was off that day. I hope to talk to him this week.

I would be willing to bet that's an 18 X 3.5 with a 130 tire.

Yeah, Chosa's in Mesa. I bought two of my bikes there and the service dept. has been pretty good.

Went to Chosa's last Spring, got my t-shirt! :D

Went to Bourget's in Mesa a couple of weeks ago, got the t-shirt also! :D

I've been to the original Chosa's in Tempe. The Mesa version is really a sweet shop. The ceiling reminded me of being out in the open on the road. I'll have to stop by later next year on my way home.
BTW, I love the spoke wheel look.

I still couldn't find the guy that put the bike together but I'm not givin' up! (Now I'm on a mission!).

Here's what I could get out of a random parts guy: It's an 80 spoke, 19 x 3; (I couldn't verify width but it did have the stock Dunlop on it). They can get a matching rear and they want $999 for each, (a little pricey for the front, IMHO). He was a little tight lipped about who they got it from, but did say it was put together locally. That's about all this guy knew and I had to get back to work.

I'll have to do some more digging over the next week or two; New Years' weekend there is a custom car and bike show here and I hear a lot of the custom builders in town will be there. If not, some of them hang out at a local refreshment provider (Billet Bar in Scottsdale) so I should be able to find out something.

I used to walk around and drool, (even though it was AMF stuff) at the original, original Chosa's in Pewaukee, WI way back in high school. They had their first shop about 15 - 20 miles straight west of the Capitol Drive Plant in Milwaukee. They moved out to Tempe about 20 years ago and now they have a second shop out in Apache Junction, AZ.

I remember at least 2 wheel vendors @ Biketoberfest selling laced wheels with one showing a picture of a V-Rod. Do an online search for laced motorcycle wheels, I'm sure you'll find a few who can make wheels for the V-Rod.
