I've seen alot of questions and comments about all kinds of fuel control systems but have not seen anything on the Accel SLM unit.
Does anyone have any feedback on this unit?

I went with the accel unit for a few reasons. I am a mechanic and have used alot of accel products on my own vehicles. they have been in business for a helluva lot longer than power commander. and seeing as though they advertise the unit as being "self learning"...and I am constantly changing out things on my bike...I figured it would be one of the better modules for myself.
well we didnt get the snow...but the 17 degree mornings are holding me from riding...lol

Self learning is what caught my attention also.
There are several modules that claim to have that ability.
Trying to figure which unit has the better results is what I'm trying to do now.
I've research the Termnal Velocity (TV2, TV3) but there seems to be questions on the service and support end.
I haven't found much on the Accel unit (new to this market?).

That 14.7 AFR might be a little lean. That's stock closed loop cruise, and on my bike that made the head pipes glow red. 13.8 is defiantly to lean at WOT, but it may not use the O2 sensors in that range.
Before anyone gets their pantys in a bunch, I'm not saying there is anything wrong this thing, what I'm saying is that it almost has to be limited. I'd ask a lot of questions before plunking down four hundred bucks.

Yup 14.7-1 is optimum, it's also hotter than hell. There is also a fair bit of mid range power to be had with a bit more fuel.
It's a tough call, $400 bucks for a non adjustable unit without a track record (from a very reputable company), or $600 bucks for a tuner with wide band sensors, total control over AFR, and a history of proven performance.

Your right.
Questions - that's what I'm trying to do - no panty issue.
I've heard others say that their head pipe turns red.
My bike is an '03' with SE high flow exhaust and air cleaner.
It also has the SE map.
I've never seen my head pipe red.
I have a Thunderheader that I would like to put on it but I know it will cause the bike to run lean.
I've tried an add on fuel control module but just wasn't happy.
I also have been looking at the race tuners but if I change my mind again it would need to be retuned.
There always seems to be something new that catches my eye.
Sometimes I even like putting it back to the way that it was before I changed it.
I like to tinker but I don't feel the need, or have the cash, to really hop-it-up (engine work, turbo, etc..).
Goes pretty good as is. At least no one that I ride with can catch me.
Thanks for the feedback - keep it coming!!

I've not experienced my pipes turning red either...lol...my bike is an 09 and was stock until this week.
I put an amsoil aif filter in with the tuner and left my stock pipes on for now. I will keep and eye on my pipes. I will be putting a rinehart 2-1 system on this week....hopefully it doesn't lean the bike out. I will keep you guys informed. And as you guys said...no panty issues...lol
If I can get the bike on the local dyno within the next month or two I will poat numbers and a/f ratios if they measure them.

Don't forget that power commander also had to start somewhere. They didn't bust onto the scene with 25 years of proven performance. Yes 400 is a lot of money...600 is 50% more. I am willing to try out the accel unit because I know that none of us will be able to feel a few horsepower or a few foot pounds of torque, and I don't have a few hundred bucks to throw away everytime I make a change to my bike in order to get a "proper" tune.
I really like hearing peoples opinions on items with which they have no experience.

you dont seem to mind risking 400bucks on an unproven tuner either.these bikes are not like cars and your tuner may not do the job .being a mechanic myself i demand the best tune possible and would not risk that money on a grandma tune.please keep us posted on the results you get from this tuner.

I know that the pcv with autotune is just that...auto tune. I don't know what the accel is preset at. If it is preset at any given point why does accel advise its customers that it will take 50-100 miles for the unit to "tune" the bike? I still have questions about it myself...lol...just like people still have questions about the pc...lol I appreciate all of the wisdom on this forum! I hope that I am not hijacking your thread hep58. I also hope that you will find someone with more experience with the accel slm than I have to offer!!

Taz, I went to Accels' website and tried to find the target AFRs, but no luck. It does say it will convert the older bikes to closed loop mode, and it's not legal in Cali. Big surprise there, huh??
When I say it's pre-set, the values it's looking for are compared to the readout from the O2 sensor and it will make adjustments and read it again, moving the fuel up or down to match their target AFR. That's why it takes 50-100 miles (or more) to tune. You don't use every cell- 1/4 throttle, 1/2, full etc. in a short distance, it pulls different in 2nd gear than 5th, etc. so it takes a while to see how it's working in different situations.

the stock hd`s run 14.7 or there abouts in closed loop. full throttle is open loop and the stock calibration has it running in the 12`s at full throttle. 14.7 is what it takes to make emissions, hd wouldn`t run them that lean if they didn`t have to. that is why the newest hd`s run so hot from the factory. full map load(high throttle settings are not tested to pass emissions so they run them around 12.5 at high map loads.,,,,richening up the closed loop to approximately 14.1 greatly reduces the temperature of the engine and the exhaust system..

Ok guys....I got my rinehart 2-1 on and the weather held out last weekend. I've put over 200 miles on the bike with the slm, amsoil filter, and pipes. For the first 20-30 miles I would get an occasional pop on decel. No longer is it there. The are no flat spots in any gear under acceleration, except when I hit the rev limiter...got to it too quick in 1st gear....lol. There has been no stumbles when applying throttle from any rpm. It is getting plenty of fuel at WOT...evident via the plume of black from the pipes.
Btw...rinehart 2-1's rock!!!!!....lol

I found a TV3 at a good price so I bought it.
I installed it and a Thunderheader last week.
I've gone about 200 miles with this setup and it seems to perform really good.
Good acceleration, no stumble or pop and the bike sounds great.
What a difference.
The bike already seemed to turn alot of heads, but now it's getting even more attention.

running 14.7 in the low load areas will cause a bike to run hot. i know this from experience. and max power 13.8 might hurt parts it damn sure won`t run like it should. the new hd`s come setup to run around 14.7 in the closed loop .. richening the closed loop as much as possible gets it around 14.1 ... the motor and the exhaust run so much cooler it is obvious. i wonder if you could use the closed loop on the accel unit for cruise throttle positions( using around 14.0) and go open loop at full throttle and tune it closer to 13.0 to 12.8?

OK, after doing a bunch of research and finding such positive reviews for the Accel SLM, I went ahead and ordered it. It should be here by the end of the week. I'll throw it on and provide a report after I get a few miles on it...
What positive reviews? We all just pointed out that the SLM runs the bike to lean, you're going to cook sitting at a stop light.

Well I've only had my slm on the bike for about 1600 miles so far. Frequently riding in shorts in 90 plus degree weather. I can say that this bike runs a Little warmer than my sportster did but it is bearable. When playing I can literaly watch the fuel guage drop. I don't care about fuel economy so I don't check it. Power is seamless. I still give it two thumbs up...because I have experience with it!
